The Grammys' 'Best New Artist' fix

After Lady Gaga failed to qualify for Best New Artist in 2010, the rules have changed... but are the new criteria a change for the better?

Best Opinion:  Idolator, LA Times, Hit Fix

Technically, snagging a Best New Artist Grammy nomination just got easier. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) announced this week that the category will no longer be barred to artists who'd previously been nominated "for the release of a single, or as a featured artist or collaborator on a compilation or other artist’s album." The change — informally dubbed the "Gaga Rule" — comes after Lady Gaga was notoriously denied a 2010 Best New Artist nomination because her single "Just Dance" was in competition the year before. Not everyone, however sees the rule tweak as an improvement. (See this past year's nominees)

Fair is fair: This is fantastic, says Becky Bain in Idolator. Now artists like up-and-comer Janelle Monae — who "was nominated in 2009 for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for 'Many Moons,' but didn’t win" — can qualify. Not incidentally, "Monae is our number one pick" to win Best New Artist in 2011.
"Grammys change Best New Artist rules one year too late for Gaga"

What about the little guy? The change certainly helps performers like Drake, already "one of the world's most popular artists,"
says Todd Martens in the Los Angeles Times. Unfortunately, it could also "shut the doors for even more for lesser-known artists." If Lady Gaga had received the New Artist "nod" in 2010, for instance, she "would have locked out an act such as MGMT, the Silversun Pickups, [or] the Ting-Tings." So much for best new artists actually being new.
"After Gaga drama, Grammys amend best new artist rules"

Keep it moving: NARAS's changes, however, don't "go far enough," says Melinda Newman in Hit Fix. To "move into the digital age," they also need to amend the "three-album rule" — which states that musicians can't qualify for the Best New Artist category unless they've released at least one album, but no more than three. As albums become less of a factor, they should change the terminology to "track" to acknowledge breakthrough artists "who might not have had an album drop yet, but have had significant impact through [digital] singles."

Turner painting sold to Getty Museum in Los Angeles for record £29.7m

1839 view of Rome is 'breathtaking image showing artist at his absolute best' says Sotheby's in London

A Turner masterpiecedepicting the city of Rome with the Colosseum in the background tonight sold at auction in London for £29.7m, a record for the British master.

The buyer was a London dealer, Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, on behalf of the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.

Six bidders pushed the price well above expectations, surpassing the Turner record of £20.5m set in 2006, for Venice, Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio.

"Turner's Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino has achieved a tremendous and much-deserved result this evening," said David Moore-Gwyn, deputy chairman at Sotheby's. "This breathtaking image shows the artist at his absolute best and, for collectors, it ticked all the boxes – quality, superb condition, provenance, and freshness-to-the-market."

Painted in 1839, the work is described by art experts as perhaps Turner's finest view of an Italian city.

Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino was his final painting of Rome, and the monumental work, measuring 90.2 by 122cm (35.5 by 48 in), brought together all of the studies made during his two visits to the Italian capital. When he first exhibited it at the Royal Academy, Turner chose to accompany the painting with lines from Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage: "The moon is up and yet it is not night,/ the sun as yet divides the day with her."

Prior to tonight's sale, the painting only appeared on the open market once in 171 years. It was offered for sale by a descendant of the 5th Earl of Rosebery, the earl having bought it in 1878 while on honeymoon with his wife, Hannah Rothschild.

The seller was the Scottish landowner and collector Hugh Munro of Novar, Turner's close friend and patron during the 1830s, who acquired the work directly from the artist's exhibition of 1839. One of the greatest Turner collectors , Novar was the only one of his patrons to have travelled with him to Italy. Modern Rome remained in Novar's collection for almost 40 years until sold by his executors.

In the painting, the city is seen from the top of Capitoline Hill, taking in the Forum, flanked by the arch of Septimus Severus, the temple of Saturn, and the Colosseum. The classical landmarks are mixed with the everyday of the contemporary city: goatherds, religious processions, and Romans attending to their business.

"The condition of this painting is one of its most amazing attributes," said Moore-Gwyn. "It is outstanding, and helps to highlight the genius of Turner by revealing the various techniques that he employed: the cross hatching of dry paint, the thinning out of the paintwork, the working with the bristles of his brush, the array of paint textures, and the subtle nuances of colour he uses."

    Rudeness at Work Causes Mistakes

ScienceDaily (July 7, 2010) — If someone is rude to you at work or if you witness rudeness you are more likely to make mistakes, says Rhona Flin, Professor of Applied Psychology at the University of Aberdeen, in an editorial published in this week's British Medical Journal

Professor Flin believes that the link between rudeness and mistakes is particularly concerning in healthcare settings, where it can pose a threat to patient safety and quality of care.

Research suggests that in confined areas, such as operating theatres, even watching rudeness that occurs between colleagues might impair team members' thinking skills.

She warns: "In surgical environments, all staff require high levels of attention and memory for task execution …. If incivility does occur in operating theatres and affects workers' ability to perform tasks, the risks for surgical patients -- whose treatment depends on particularly high levels of mental concentration and flawless task execution -- could increase."

Rudeness at work is not uncommon, says Professor Flin. In a survey of 391 NHS operating theatre staff, 66% of respondents said they had "received aggressive behaviour" from nurses and 53% from surgeons during the previous six months.

Disagreements between surgeons and theatre nurses were reported by 63% of respondents, and disagreements between theatre nurses and ward nurses were reported by 58%. The main source of this problem was the management of the operating list.

Interviews with scrub nurses also indicated that they sometimes had to tolerate surgeons' bad temper and tantrums.

Flin concludes: "People concerned with patient safety should note that civility between workers may have more benefits than just a harmonious atmosphere."

It's safe to say Angelina Jolie is as well known for the details of her personal life as she is for her work as a Hollywood actress. Occasionally, however, those two aspects collide, like when her onscreen characters sport some of her real-life tattoos. And Jolie's penchant for ink has been well-documented, both in the tabloids that follow her closely and in her big-screen appearances. But observant fans recently spotted some new work when Vanity Fair ran a cover story on the A-List star

MTV News caught up with the star this week in Washington, D.C., where Jolie was promoting "Salt," and we had to ask about the tattoo. But the actress was tight-lipped about what the ink, on her inner thigh, actually said.

"Um, it's for Brad," Jolie demurred with a smile.

She was more open, she said, when it comes to her personal life.

"I actually think it's important to be completely honest, however difficult that may be," Jolie told us about what makes a relationship successful. "I'm bad at hiding secrets anyway," she added.

While we won't speculate on the content of her latest tattoo (that's what the zoom feature on Photoshop is for), the balance of Jolie's tattoos more or less chronicle her romantic history, and offer some insight into her philosophies about love and life. On her shoulder, for instance, is a Buddhist Pali incantation that offers such wisdom as "if you acquire riches, may they remain yours always," and on her hip is a Latin inscription: "quod me nutrit me destruit," which translates to "what nourishes me, destroys me."

Jolie also revealed that her partner, Pitt, had yet to see the action flick, which opens July 23.

"He hasn't seen the movie," she said. "Maybe he'll question me after he sees it," she joked of playing a string of wives-with-secrets. Jolie admitted she couldn't be sure how her choice in roles might affect their offscreen relationship. But she was sure Pitt would enjoy "Salt."

"Oh, of course," Jolie said. "He was there for the shooting and he would come to set and he'd seen some of the stunt sequences and stuff. He thinks it looks cool and all of that, but he hasn't seen the whole thing. He'll see it at the premiere."

'I always felt caged': Angelina Jolie on why she was driven to cut herself

    Angelina Jolie

Dark past: Angelina Jolie, pictured here promoting her new film Salt in Cancun last week, has opened up about her self-harming

Angelina Jolie has told how she used to self-harm because she felt 'caged'.

The Oscar-winning actress said she was always seeking new thrills - forcing her into more and more extreme behaviour.

But she claims she has changed as she focuses on her new role as a mother.

She said: 'I used to cut myself or jump out of airplanes, trying to find something new to push up against because sometimes everything else felt too easy.

'I was searching for something deeper, something more. I tried everything. I always felt caged, closed in, like I was punching at things that weren't there. I always had too much energy for the room I was in.

'I went through a period when I felt my film characters were having more fun than I was.

'It might partly explain why I ended up tattooed or doing certain extreme things in my life.'

Pointing out bodywork on her arm - one of her 13 tattoos - she added: 'The wild heart caged. I unlocked my cage years ago. I want my children to have that freedom. I want that for other people, too.'

A tattoo on her left arm reads: 'A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages.'

In a candid interview with America's Parade magazine - to be published in full on Sunday - the 35-year-old star also talks at length of her love for partner Brad Pitt, 46, whom she says loves her for all her 'oddities'.

And she said that while the couple's six children - adopted Maddox eight, Pax, six, and Zahara, five; and biological kids, Shiloh, four, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 23-months-old - help cement their partnership, there needs to be more than that to make it last.

     Angelina Jolie

Family first: The actress, seen here leaving Mexico with Zahara, Shiloh and  Maddox also spoke about her relationship with Brad Pitt

She told the publication: 'Brad knows me completely, exactly as I am, every part of me.

'He loves me. The kids love me. They know all my flaws and all my oddities. And they accept them. And so I can feel complete.'

She added: 'The children certainly tie us together, but a relationship won't hold if it's only about the kids.

'You also must be really interested in each other and have a really, really wonderful, exciting time together. We do.

'Brad and I love being together. We enjoy it. We need it, and we always find that special time.

'We stay connected. We talk about it. It's very important. If Brad and I are strong and happy, then our kids have happy parents, and that's the best thing we can give them.'

She added: 'I feel sad for someone who has never known love. Love elevates. You know, Brad would joke about me having this conversation about love.

    Angelina Jolie

Cover girl: The actress opened up in the new issue of Parade magazine

'Love? It's such a funny word. Brad can find certain phrases of poetry for it.

'I'm terrible at it. But I know it means wanting the best for the people you love, putting their interests above your own, always. Love does that. Love is what you live for.'

The actress, who is in the middle of a massive publicity push for new film, double-agent spy thriller, Salt, also told how the couple tries to shield their children from the media glare.

'We do everything we can to keep our kids away from it. We travel to places where the kids aren't aware of that kind of thing. We try to give them a full life where they don't have to come face to face with that world,' she said.

'With the paparazzi present, we're careful when we leave the house.

'We don't stand in the checkout line at the grocery store looking at the magazines. Our friends don't tell us about it. And our kids don't know. I feel if we keep looking out for them, they'll be fine.

'There's never a period when Brad and I are pulled apart. We are not separated for more than three days, ever.

'We stay really connected. We actually don't go out much. It's funny. We're very homebound.

'We're very much Mummy and Daddy in our pyjamas.

'He takes the kids to school; he visits me on set with the kids. I'm home for dinner, or I'm there for breakfast. We're together all the time. We plan.

'Brad and I take time off between films to travel, have big experiences, do things together. That's how we work it out.'

Jolie also opened up about the death of her mother, actress Marcheline Bertand at the age of 56 in 2007.

She said: 'Mother never put herself first, ever. At the end, she said her greatest success was being a mother. I remember Mother singing in church. How pretty she was!

'I lit candles with her. She said she had missed nothing in life except getting to know her grandchildren. When she passed away, I brought my son to church to light a candle for her.'

Salt hits screens in the US on July 23 and in the UK on August 20.

Pa. Widow Lives With Corpses Of Husband, Twin

Jean Stevens Had Dead Bodies Of Husband, Twin Sister Exhumed And Stored In Pa. House

A 91-year-old woman found living with the corpses of her husband and twin sister will be allowed to keep them if she installs a mausoleum or crypt, a prosecutor said Tuesday

Jean Stevens has indicated through her attorney that she plans to build an aboveground vault on her property to store the bodies of James Stevens and June Stevens, according to Bradford County District Attorney Daniel Barrett.

"If she does that, the bodies will be released for that purpose," he said. "Otherwise they will be re-interred."

Stevens' attorney, Leslie Wizelman, did not immediately return phone messages left at her office.

Stevens previously told The Associated Press that she kept the embalmed remains of her loved ones because she wanted to be able to see them and talk to them. She also said she's claustrophobic and couldn't stand the thought of their bodies in caskets in the ground.

State police have been investigating the bizarre case since the corpses were discovered in mid-June. Authorities found the body of James Stevens on a couch in the detached garage and the body of June Stevens on a couch in a spare room off the bedroom.

Stevens had them dug up shortly after they died -- James in 1999 and June in October -- and tended to their remains at her rural property outside the northern Pennsylvania town of Wyalusing.

Barrett said a decision on charges could be made as early as Friday, after he meets with investigators.

He said authorities are looking into several possible violations, including misdemeanor abuse of a corpse. He also cited possible summary violations of the state health code, which regulates how bodies must be disinterred.

"There were some things done here that were not lawful," he said.

Police haven't said who retrieved the bodies

Peeping Tom victim: 'I'll never have peace'

Bond set at $600,000 for man charged with voyeurism

    By Kimberly Dick

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Rock Hill mother who used a video camera to catch someone watching her and her children shower says that man violated her - stripping her of her peace of mind.

The 33-year-old mother of four said she now feels someone is always watching her, even in her own home.

The woman, whom The Herald is not identifying to protect her and her children's identities, captured video footage of a man watching them shower through a hole she suspects was drilled in the ceiling in their Estes Court apartment off Herlong Avenue near Ebenezer Road.

Police identified that man as her neighbor, 28-year-old Troy Dean Christenbury.

Rock Hill Municipal Court Judge Ray Long set bond for Christenbury at $600,000 Wednesday afternoon. Christenbury faces three counts of voyeurism in connection with videotapes police say the woman gathered as evidence.

The charge is a high court misdemeanor that carries a three-year possible sentence on each count, Rock Hill Police Lt. Michael Belk said.

Arrest warrants say the charges correspond with incidents on June 10, June 28 and June 30. In one of those incidents, the camera captured a man watching while 8- and 10-year-old girls showered. The woman has two other children, ages 12 and 5.

At her sister's urging, the woman saved money to buy a camera to find out why a one-inch hole was cut in the ceiling above the shower. The apartment has one-and-a half bathrooms. From that hole in the attic, the woman said you can see the shower and toilet.

"I was getting ready to take a shower and I noticed white powder coming from the ceiling," she said. "I noticed the hole. I didn't know what it was. I knew it was a hole.

"I was kind of scared because it wasn't there before. It was bothering me, you know."

The next day, she said she checked the attic and saw the chicken-wire divider between her apartment and another had been cut.

"I was really scared that time. I started looking for the hole. I couldn't find it," she said. "Then, I moved the insulation."

She said she didn't know what to do next. She suspected someone was watching her family, but she wasn't sure. It was too hot to just sit in the attic and wait to see if anyone was using the hole as a window, she said.

After saving money for a week to buy a camera, the woman learned her fear that an intruder was spying on her family was true. The video showed a person's arm.

"There were a lot of things in my head at that time," she said. "I worried that if he can be in my attic, he could come into my apartment if he wants to. I was really scared.

"I didn't have any peace. I was taking my kids to friends', family's houses. Afraid to shower. Afraid to be in the house."

She said she would wait until her neighbor left to take showers or shower elsewhere.

"You feel violated," she said. "When you're taking a shower and knowing that someone's watching you. I don't even know how to tell you... it's scary."

The woman went back later into the attic and moved the camera to a better position. What the next video revealed shocked her, she said. It clearly captured a man's upper body and face. It showed tattoos that the woman recognized as those on her neighbor, whom police identified as Christenbury.

"I figured I'd have to put it on tape more than once for evidence," she said. "I got him on tape three times. Four actually, but in one you can only see his arm. Then I decided to call the police."

The woman said she only knew Christenbury by sight, not name. She said he moved in more than six months ago with his fiancée, who had lived there longer.

The victim said she was thinking about her children and protecting them when she set up the video sting. After her children were asleep, she said she went to watch the tape.

"When he heard the noise of them taking a shower, he went up there," she said. "You can hear and see how he sits down, gets under insulation to see through the hole. He's there the whole time my kids are taking a shower.

"When you have kids, you would do anything to protect them. Anyone would do what I did. I had to do something to prove it. It was wrong

Lonnie David Franklin Jr. appears in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday. Police linked his DNA from a slice of pizza to the "Grim Sleeper" slayings

Los Angeles - A discarded slice of pizza lead to the arrest of an alleged serial killer in Los Angeles who evaded police for 25 years, the LA Times reported Thursday.

Police arrested Lonnie David Franklin Jr, 57, on charges of having sexually assaulted and murdered at least 10 women, most of them prostitutes, between 1985 and 2007. Only one victim is known to have escaped

The killings were dubbed the 'Grim Sleeper' murders owing to a 13-year break in the crimes from 1990 to 2003.

The killer left few clues to his identity, but investigators recovered DNA samples from the crime scenes.

A 2008 DNA sweep in California's prisons brought no results, the paper said. But a second search came up with a convict whose DNA indicated that he was a close relative of the wanted killer.

Police officials said the convict's father emerged as a likely suspect over the weekend and an undercover team retrieved a thrown-away slice of pizza to analyze his DNA.

Franklin was arrested on Wednesday, following a confirmed DNA match.

Neighbours described the suspect as a 'very good man' who helped out and fixed neighbours' cars.
