By Sara Nathan
Cheryl Cole's much-hyped debut solo performance helped The X Factor pull in a record audience of nearly 15million.
The Girls Aloud singer, 26, had battled extreme nerves ahead of Sunday night's routine, even bursting into tears at one point in the previous day's show.
But despite yesterday confirming that she mimed during parts of the performance of her single Fight For This Love, Mrs Cole managed a confident display and drew more viewers to the ITV talent show than last year's final.

I did it: A relieved Cheryl Cole leaves the X Factor studio on Sunday night
The ratings for the Sunday results show, aided in part by Whitney Houston's shambolic comeback, peaked at 14.8million, with a 50 per cent share of the available audience.
This eclipsed the 14.6million that tuned in to see Alexandra Burke crowned the winner of last year's series in December.
It also compares favourably with the soap operas which normally top the ratings - Coronation Street, for example, regularly attracts more than 10million viewers an episode.
Saturday night's X Factor had 12.2million viewers, a 49 per cent share, while rival BBC show Strictly Come Dancing managed to peak with just 8.5million, a 33 per cent share.
The small audience for the ballroom dancing show calls into question the BBC's decision to move Strictly from its Saturday early evening slot to compete directly with X Factor.

Sources at the corporation believe it is now only a matter of time before the BBC admits defeat and moves the show to a different time slot.
The decision to compete with X Factor upset millions of fans and led to criticism from Sir Michael Lyons, chairman of the BBC Trust.
Last month he said the BBC should focus on the 'quality and impact of its programmes, not just audience share'.
He added: 'Viewers were asked to make a choice and that choice didn't go in favour of the BBC.'
Strictly has been competing with X Factor for a month and has lost the ratings war every week. There are also fears that this year's crop of contestants on the dance show are barely known celebrities, with a line-up that reads like a Who's Who of former soap stars.

Strange: Whitney Houston on Sunday night's X Factor
X Factor's Simon Cowell has called the prime-time clash 'crazy', adding: 'I don't think there are any other shows people are passionate about right now - and it's crazy that they're up against each other.'
Cowell had said many viewers would be 'frustrated' and said he would be keen to sit down with BBC executives, arguing that licence-fee payers wanted quality TV, not a ratings war.
A BBC source said: 'We're holding our nerve about going head to head with The X Factor for the moment, but it is getting increasingly difficult when we see the ratings on Sunday mornings.
'I'm not sure how much longer Strictly will be on for so long against the X Factor. It's not doing the show any good.
Energetic: Cheryl's dance routine
'Let's face it, we need all the viewers we can get with a line-up that has been accused of being so lacklustre to say the least.'
While Mrs Cole's performance helped boost X Factor's ratings, the singer admitted yesterday that she had partly mimed.
Show bosses had forced her to scrap plans to entirely pre-record her performance of her single, Fight For This Love, following an uproar by viewers.
Instead, her routine on Sunday's results show - for which she wore a revealing, military-inspired uniform - was partly live and partly mimed.

Friends in high places: The X Factor judges with Whitney Houston
A spokesman for the singer defended the move, saying: 'Cheryl sang the verses and not the choruses. This is normal for any performers with an energetic routine.'
Mrs Cole had been highly nervous before Sunday's performance, as her tears during an emotional moment in Saturday's show demonstrated.
And a close friend said: 'There were tears last week, not just on Saturday night.'
But after her successful performance, a smiling Mrs Cole celebrated backstage with her Girls Aloud colleagues Kimberly Walsh, Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts.

Former senior military figures are among members of the British National Party, according to a new list published today.
The leaked document of those affiliated to the far-right party includes several Majors, scores of doctors and some professors.
It lists not only names and street addresses, but also post codes, mainline telephone and mobile phone numbers.
The document, which purports to show the membership on April 15 of this year, was revealed by the WikiLeaks website.
It is the third time in recent years that such a list has been published and comes days before leader Nick Griffin is due to appear on BBC's Question Time.
BBC's Question Time .
The BBC Trust is now reviewing his involvement in the high-profile show after it was contacted by Welsh Secretary Peter Hain last night.
Leak: A new list of alleged BNP members has been published just two days before leader Nick Griffin, above, is due to appear on Question Time
Mr Hain turned to the corporation's governing body after his plea for Mr Griffin to be dropped from the programme was rejected by director general Mark Thompson.
He argues that the party is not 'lawfully constituted' because it has admitted only accepting white members and is now having to change its rules.
The minister told Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons: 'Until that happens and until the court case is resolved, it is not for the BBC to prejudge matters and confer a legitimacy on the BNP that even they do not claim today.'
It is the first time the Trust has been asked to step in before a show goes on the air and it is expected to fast-track the review.
In a separate row today, ex-Army chiefs accused the BNP of hijacking patriotic British symbols and attaching itself to the Armed Forces for its own 'dubious ends'.
A letter signed by General Sir Richard Dannatt and General Sir Mike Jackson said it was tarnishing the forces' reputation by associating itself with soldiers' sacrifices.
The BNP refused to confirm whether the latest 'membership' was genuine, insisting it is a private matter who is involved with the party.
It blamed its release on an attempt by the 'whole establishment' to derail the party ahead of Mr Griffin's planned appearance on the Question Time this Thursday.
Top ballerina Simone Clarke has previously been exposed as in the BNP
'The timing of it, just before Question Time, is suspicious. The whole media is out to derail the BNP,' a spokesman said.
Mr Griffin, writing on the party website before the list was unveiled, also claimed the leak was part of a 'massive media hysteria smear campaign'.
He added: 'If the new list is actually genuine, it will not be reflective of the party's true membership figures or even the inquiries database.'
The BBC's invitation to Mr Griffin to appear on the political discussion show has provoked a storm of controversy.
Critics insist the leader, as an extremist, should have no platform on the high-profile political programme but the corporation has so far stood firm and refused to axe him.
Mr Hain called on the director general to drop him from the panel yesterday, claiming the BBC could face legal action if it went ahead.
He argued that the BNP was currently an 'unlawful body' after the party told a court last week it would amend its whites-only membership rules to meet discrimination legislation.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission had issued county court proceedings over concerns the membership criteria were restrictive to those within certain ethnic groups.
But the BBC rejected the call. Mr Thompson said the court case did not legally inhibit the corporation because the BNP was still operating.
High-profile: Nick Griffin is due to appear on Question Time this Thursday
He said: 'It remains the BBC's obligation to scrutinise and hold to account all elected representatives and to do so with due impartiality.
'We are also advised that if there were to be any election - local or national - tomorrow, the BNP would still be able to field candidates.
'We therefore do not agree that the developments in the Central London County Court proceedings legally inhibit the BBC from allowing Nick Griffin to participate on the Question Time programme and our position remains as set out
.'
Mr Griffin will appear alongside Justice Secretary Jack Straw, representatives of the other main parties and black writer Bonnie Greer.
The BBC says Mr Griffin's inclusion is based on obligations resulting from the party's success in winning two seats in European Parliament elections this year.
Anti-fascist campaigners plan to stage a protest against Mr Griffin's presence on the show at the BBC's Television Centre in west London when it is filmed.
But an opinion poll at the weekend found voters backed the BBC by 63 per cent to 23 per cent

Toddler: Dylan Lowe, now three, was two when he escaped nursery and walked home alone
A boy of two was left to walk home on his own after he sneaked out of nursery during a school induction day.
Dylan Lowe, who has just turned three, gave his teacher the slip less than an hour after he was dropped off because he didn't want to be parted from his mother on his first day.
But after wandering out of the gates of St Thomas' Primary School in Moorside, near Oldham, Greater Manchester, Dylan dodged traffic on a busy main road and crossed two side streets before toddling home.
He then stunned his father Phillip Lowe, 28, by turning up at the family house asking: 'Where's mummy?'
A teacher arrived within minutes to collect him and take him back.
Today, as the school apologised, Dylan's mother Toni Boswell, 27, a mother of three said, 'I can't believe this was allowed to happen to my son.
'It is every parents worst nightmare for a child to go missing but for Dylan to run out of school under the noses of teachers is scandalous.
'I am disgusted that a little child could go home on his own.'
The incident occurred after Miss Boswell dropped Dylan off at the nursery before going to the doctors for a medical appointment.
She added: 'He's a big wanderer like many other children of his age and I had even told a teacher on the induction day that my main concern was that Dylan runs off and I was frightened he might do the same at the nursery.
'I walked all the way round the side of the school to go to the doctors. I looked back when I walked out and I saw the door of the nursery was open but I just thought, "stop worrying" and I carried on with my journey.
'When I came back my partner was waiting for me at the side of the street, and he said "we've had a visitor."

Dylan's route home: The toddler crossed a busy main road and two side streets before arriving home
'Dylan had been in the house for about four minutes on his own before the teacher came down to get him.
'Apparently he had got out and got through the play area but was outside the shops nearby on his own for four minutes because he thought I was there
'It took him three or four minutes to walk home. He had to cross a main road which is also a bus route, and then he was at the shop, and then he has to walk down two side streets to get home.
'The school said they were really sorry and were apologising non-stop. They said they didn't know how he had got out. Dylan was upset after it happened, he started crying when he saw me.
'The teacher took him over to all the other boys and girls and said that they couldn't go out onto the road. They were obviously very sorry for what happened.
'But they said they couldn't lock the gates because of all the deliveries they get, and when I asked for electronic gates they said they did not have any money for it.
'I don't think they are taking it seriously enough and it could happen again.'
Dylan is now attending another nursery.
Adam Laskey, head teacher of St Thomas', said: 'We regret this incident and immediately took action, including additional security measures and new procedures, to prevent a recurrence.
'We have continued to monitor and review these procedures.
'We would like to thank the parents who have supported us in this by ensuring they close the gates installed for their children's safety as they come and go.'

Three years ago, Ben Elton wrote a book called Chart Throb, a savage satire about a TV talent show where ten contestants battled it out for the chance to become a pop star.
In his novel, the show was fixed, the contestants were horribly manipulated and the only real winner was the evil genius behind the whole production.
Watching The X Factor last weekend, it struck me how Elton's fiction did not appear to be so far away from reality.
The X Factor is currently trouncing all its rivals in the ratings and has breathed life and much-needed advertising revenue back into ITV.
Tears before the break time: Simon upsets Cheryl over her choice of song for a contestant
On Sunday, 14.8million people, that's half the viewing population of the UK, were watching Simon Cowell and his cast of players on the live results show - and I was one of them.
Over the course of an hour, I witnessed a footballer's wife pout and preen her way through a dire song-and-dance routine, while a fading singing superstar gave the most underwhelming performance of her career - yet both acts were hailed like conquering heroines.
Attention: Cheryl performed her new single on X Factor and it was well received
The drama was interspersed with tears, tantrums and tiffs while the baying audience cheered or booed accordingly.
Although to all intents and purposes they may as well have been shouting 'behind you', because the truth is that in the space of five years The X Factor has gone from being harmless light entertainment to the most over-hyped pantomime on TV - where nothing is really as it seems.
First, we had Simon attacking Cheryl Cole's choice of song for two of the acts she's mentoring. This, inevitably, reduced her to turning on the waterworks - the only currency that really holds sway on The X Factor - before she hugged one of the singers in question as though he was her long-lost brother.
Then, a day later, after she'd partly mimed - or so people are saying - her way through two verses of her new single, Simon gave up the Bad Cop act and told her how wonderful she was.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have no axe to grind with this programme - I've never applied to go on it and been rejected, before you ask. In fact, I've been a fan of the show since it launched in 2004.
In its first few years, it was nothing more than a bit of weekend froth to eat takeaway pizza with on a Saturday night.
Some of the contestants were really good, others were pretty awful and nobody took it too seriously. But last Saturday night it was clear how big, bad and brash the whole production has become.
The audience members have obviously been whipped into a frenzy by the time the show comes on air at 8pm - they are so hysterical that you can barely hear the judges or host Dermot O'Leary speak.
Make no mistake, the judges (and not the contestants) are the real stars of the show. They arrive on stage in a fog of dry ice, Simon in his familiar open-necked shirt and Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole in their teeny-tiny designer dresses.
First contestant up is Lucie Jones, a slim and very pretty 18-year-old from South Wales who performs the Whitney Houston classic How Will I Know. To my ears, she sounds terrible - she can't hit the big notes and the ones in between are flat and bland.
Just to check that I'm not alone in my thinking, I log onto Digital Spy - a hugely popular TV monitoring internet forum - and the general consensus is that she isn't up to the job. Yet the judges rave about her performance.
Simon Cowell even tells her that she will go a long way in the show. Can't they hear what we hear?
The answer is: yes they can, but it doesn't matter because The X Factor is no more about identifying the most talented singer than Big Brother is about conducting a fascinating social experiment.
Make up: Cheryl and Simon patch things up after he criticised her choice of song in a moment of high drama
Simon Cowell is fond of reminding us that The X Factor is a 'singing competition', but if that were true then why would he have allowed Irish twins John and Edward Grimes to get through to the final stages when they can't sing, can't dance and can barely construct a coherent sentence between them
?
Because every pantomime needs its jokers, that's why -
somebody to point at, laugh at and ridicule. From the first auditions until the final winner is crowned, The X Factor is more tightly controlled and manipulated than a General Election campaign.
On Saturday, Lloyd Daniels, another teenager from Wales, who is being 'mentored' by Cheryl Cole and has a weak, soppy voice, was made to sing a huge Leona Lewis soul ballad.
Predictably it was a disaster - bully boy Simon told Cheryl it was all her fault because she had picked the wrong song.
Cheryl burst into tears, the public lapped it all up and Lloyd, one of the worst performers of the night, got to stay in the show. I wonder how many of the 14.8million viewers pondered, as I did, whether the whole thing was set up.

It may have a high neckline and fall to the knee, but there was nothing demure about Katie Holmes' see-through dress last night.

By Lucy Elkins
Their hair's falling out, they can't keep their food down and they catch every bug going. Gastric bypass ops transformed these siblings' looks, but it's been far from easy.
Dropping her eight-year-old son off at school used to be a pretty lonely experience for Pauline Johnson.
While the other parents would engage in friendly chit-chat at the school gates, none would even acknowledge her existence.

After: Gastric band sisters Georgina, Sharon and Pauline Johnson have shed pounds since their operations
Pauline was grossly overweight. The 36-year-old had been more than 20st for all of her adult life, and at her heaviest she weighed 29st.
She was so large that other people would 'look right through me', she says.
Her weight was also wreaking havoc with her health.
With a Body Mass Index of 52.7, Pauline was officially 'super obese' - that's the very top of the obesity scale.
At that size, the strain on your heart and other organs, as well as your very joints and bones, puts you at major risk of an early death.
Yet in just eight months Pauline has lost almost 8st, and her BMI is down to 33.6 - making her just 'obese'.
As well as dramatically improving her health - she no longer needs tablets for high blood pressure and her hormones are back under control so her periods have returned - her relationship with her son has been transformed. The other school-run mothers have also started talking to her.
And it's all thanks to a gastric bypass.
What makes her story remarkable, though, is that Pauline didn't do it alone, but with her sisters Georgina, 37, and Sharon, 29, whose BMIs were also more than 50.

All three had exactly the same operation on the same day in the hospital. All three, however, had fascinatingly different experiences.

Before: (left to right) Georgina, Sharon and Pauline were much larger before they had gastric bands fitted
For the operations in February this year, their stomachs were stapled to the size of a walnut.
Then a metre-long section of the intestine was bypassed, so not only was the amount they could eat drastically reduced, but they would absorb far less from the food they did eat.
Demand for this kind of surgery has more than doubled in the past year, according to official figures published earlier this month.
Experts claim it's a more effective way of saving lives than drugs and dieting. The pictures here are testament to the stunning potential of this surgery.
Sceptics might scoff that it's the easy option - indeed, even their own friends 'didn't approve' of the operation, says Georgina. 'They thought it showed I had no will-power.'
But it's been far from easy, the sisters say. Indeed, eight months on they are still struggling with the side-effects of the surgery.
But how did they end up in this absurd state in the first place?
The Johnsons are disarmingly honest about it. They don't come from a family of over-eaters.
Their father is slim, and although their mother has occasionally been overweight, she has never been obese like her daughters.
Pauline, who lives with her son Peter and partner Chris Decourcy, 43, a lorry driver, makes no excuses and does not blame her weight on her metabolism.
The truth, she says, is that she was simply addicted to food.
'Food has obsessed us since we were kids,' adds Sharon, who is a full-time mother and lives with her partner John Keeble, 47, and her daughter Jessie, 12.
'Most of my childhood memories are of food: of cooking cakes with mum, of raiding the fridge when my parents were asleep.
'I never felt satisfied by a meal, and I could always eat a bit more. One of the reasons this operation really appealed to me was because I would finally feel full after eating.'
The sisters went from being large teenagers to even larger young women - and their addiction was slowly been killing them.
Earlier this year, Georgina was warned that unless she lost weight she would die within ten years because of the strain her weight was putting on her heart.
Sharon has been unable to have an operation to remove an extremely painful inflamed fallopian tube because major open surgery on a woman of her bulk would be too risky. Pauline's very high blood pressure put her at increased risk of a heart attack.

All were warned that they were in serious danger of developing diabetes, heart disease and various cancers because of their size.
Despite such a stark choice - slim down or die - they knew that it would take more than just dieting. They'd tried that in the past.
Sharon dieted after her daughter's birth, eating just one apple every other day.
'I lost 7st in six months, but often fainted, and as soon as I started to eat normally again, the weight crept back on,' she says.
As well as dieting, Pauline, who lives in Ashington, West Sussex, had been prescribed the slimming pills Xenical three years ago.
'It's supposed to take all the fat you eat out of your body,' she says. I lost a stone in about a month, but then it stopped working - mainly because I was still eating high-calorie foods such as chips.
'My will to eat was stronger than my will to slim down.'
The surgery was Sharon's idea. She says: 'Pauline lives opposite a man who'd had it done and lost loads of weight. He inspired me to do it and to persuade my sisters.'
Their GP was happy to refer them for the operation.
Bariatric surgery, as it is called, is available only to those with a BMI of more than 40 unless they have an obesity-related disease, in which case it is available to those with a BMI of above 35.
The sisters asked if they could have the surgery on the same day for moral support.
'I was nervous about the operation, but I felt there was no choice,' says Georgina, who lives with her son David, 12, in Storrington, West Sussex.
'My joints ached constantly as it was so hard lugging my weight around. None of us had the energy to do much as a result. Even walking into the garden was an effort for me.'
Gastric bypasses not only reduce the amount of food that can physically fit into the stomach, but - for reasons not fully understood - the operation also seems to stop people obsessing about food.
Within hours, that gnawing hunger that had been so big a part of the sisters' lives had gone.
'I was a bit nervous about eating for the first time,' says Sharon.
'I had a teaspoon of soup, my stomach made a lot of gurgling noises and I felt full. My brain told me I hadn't eaten much food, but my body didn't agree.
'Normally I'd plan one meal as soon as the last one is over, but suddenly I didn't want any more.'
But it all came at a price.
They could eat only mashed food for the first month - the operation had caused swelling around their stomachs, so anything at all chunky would not get through - and at first they could not even take the vitamin pills they will need for the rest of their lives to make up for lost nutrients.
After a lifetime of eating oversized meals, adapting to only spoonfuls of pureed food was far from easy.
'I wasn't ever that hungry, but soon got sick of living on gloop,' says Pauline. 'I just had soup, more soup and mashed potato.
'One day I ate a bit of tuna because I was so desperate for something with a different texture. But as I ate it, I felt a pain as it was going down. It really hurt and made me sick.'
All three sisters were sick from time to time, as eating the wrong thing or too fast leads to the stomach of those who have had such surgery being unable to cope.
But for the past five months Sharon has been sick after every meal - a side-effect of the operation which the sisters were warned about, possibly caused by the new stomach
outlet becoming inflamed. She is now on anti-sickness and anti-acid pills, and the hope is that her problem will eventually settle down.
But with their bodies still recovering from surgery and with so little food (in the early days, they were having only 500 calories a day), the sisters have not been able to fight off infections as efficiently as possible.
Sharon, in particular, has been dogged by illness after illness, from chest and sinus, to ear and bladder infections.
The reduction in nutrients has also meant they've suffered hair loss - Pauline has had to start wearing a wig for special occasions as hers has become so wispy - and now have handfuls of loose skin.
'When I put on my swimming costume I look revolting because the loose skin falls out the side,' says Pauline.
'I can't wear jeans because there's nowhere to push the skin in. It is horrible and makes us all look like shrivelled up old women.'
They can have the loose skin removed on the NHS, but must wait two years until their weight has stabilised (which it will as their stomachs expand slightly and the intestine starts to recover and absorb more and more of the food they eat).
Against all this, of course, has had to be weighed the joy of losing weight. In the early days, the sisters each lost, on average, a stone or more a month.
Since the operation Georgina has shed 6st 7lb, and Pauline and Sharon 7st 11lb each.
'I got through bras really quickly,' says Pauline happily.
'Before the operation I was a 48DD, and by July [five months later] I had shot down to a 40DD and am now a 34DD.'
There are other positive benefits. After just a month, Sharon was able to come off the antidepressants she had taken for 16 years.
'My attitude changed really quickly,' she says. 'I felt positive and appreciated things more.'
She has also now been given the go-ahead for surgery to have her inflamed fallopian tube removed.
Within a month of the operation, Georgina took her son to school for the first time in his life; normally she didn't have the energy to do it, and he would get the bus on his own.
'Seeing his smiling face makes all this so worthwhile.'
She is now thinking about going back to her career as a care worker.
And Pauline's periods returned within two months after years of being without them, as being so obese had interfered with her hormone levels.
She and her partner Chris are now planning to try for another child.
'I have dreamed of having another baby for years, but it was impossible when I was so big,' she says.
And the mothers who once shunned her at the school gates are now asking her round for coffee.
'I didn't realise how much weight loss would make my entire world change,' she says.
As well as being a fraction of the size that the sisters once enjoyed, meals are now a healthy diet of home-cooked, low-fat food.
'Just after having this operation I was still making the boys burger and chips. Now, I never cook junk food,' says Pauline.
'I can now eat just about everything, but I'm happy eating healthy foods.
'Not only have I lost weight, my son has lost a stone, too, and is now just right for his height. That was another motivation for me to sort myself out, because I would have been mortified if he'd had to suffer in the way I did.'
So will they keep it off this time? Around one in 20 who have the operation put the weight back on.
'I savour each mouthful of food I have now,' says Sharon. 'I don't stuff it in like I used to, and I exercise. I have been given a new life. I'm not going to be stupid enough to mess it up.'
