In preparation for the live final shows, the 12 X Factor contestants have been given a glamorous makeover. The next 12 weeks will see them battle it out in the singing stakes on live TV, in the categories of male and female soloists, over-25s and groups. With viewing figures of around 10 million every Saturday night, it's more important than ever that the finalists look every inch the pop star they're aiming to become. Having been plucked, preened, dyed and highlighted to within an inch of their lives, it's fair to say that some contestants look more gorgeous than ever, while some are almost unrecognisable!

Alexandra Burke - Alexandra looks more fabulous and sophisticated than ever after a rigorous X Factor makeover. Having reached Louis’ house three years ago and failing to progress, the 20-year-old Londoner is determined to succeed this time around. “I’m ready for this competition now and I’m so thankful to Louis Walsh for turning me down when I was younger. I was just a little girl who thought she knew it all – but I didn’t. I’m older and wiser now, and I know who I am.” Her desire to go all the way coupled with a great new look makes her one to watch as the competition reaches its final stages.

Laura White - It's a sultry, sexy, and glamorous new look for Manchester-born Laura. She will battle it out live with Alexandra and Diana in Cheryl's female soloists category as the show enters its final stretch.

Diana Vickers - Female soloist Diana now looks every inch the starlet as she prepares for the live Saturday night shows. She recently admitted to being nervous about the competition and has been trying to reassure herself ever since: "I keep telling myself I wouldn't be here if I wasn't as good as the others." With her new look it's not hard to imagine her making a good impression, especially on a certain Mr Cowell...

JLS - Marvin, Jonathan, Ortise and Aston of the band JLS model their sleek new look following their finalist makeover... with the leather jackets and tight black T-shirts it all looks a bit Grease. JLS compete against the ladies of Girlband and Bad Lashes in the groups category

Girlband - Tita, Phoebe, Marisa and Layla of Girlband are sure to turn heads in the live finals with their makeover, especially the fiery-looking Layla (second from right) who says "I reckon the red is to make us more sexy!" Will the public agree?

Bad Lashes - Sam, Stacey, Sophie and Emily of Bad Lashes never had any trouble attracting attention with their looks before, but their new glam image takes them to a whole new level, making them serious contenders in Louis' groups category

Ruth Lorenzo - Spanish beauty Ruth unveils a sexy yet sophisticated new image after her X Factor makeover. "I never thought I would get this far, being in the live show means so much to me," she recently said. She takes part in the over-25s group with fellow finalists Daniel and Rachel

Daniel Evans - Daniel's sun-bleached look is out thanks to the X Factor makeover team, but the singer also revealed that he is on a self-imposed get fit quick campaign to create a svelte new image in time for the finals: "Since we moved into the house last Saturday I've been in the gym twice a day, and I've lost nearly a stone... I don't want people to think I'm a pot-bellied pig up there trying to sing. I know Barry White got away with it but I'm not sure I can!"

Rachel Hylton - Rachel has made a stunning transformation from busy mum to showbiz glamour puss - and she is loving her new look: "I really enjoyed the photo shoot and I loved being pampered and looked after. When would I ever be able to do all of this?" The cute headscarf Rachel wore to auditions is gone and in its place is a sleek hairstyle coupled with a smoky-eyed look. She grinned: "I felt a bit self conscious when my make-up was finished but after while I got used to being in front of the camera and enjoyed myself"!

Eoghan Quigg - There are fewer spikes in Northern Ireland-born Eoghan's hair, replaced instead by a feathered style. The 16-year-old will be feeling the pressure as he competes as part of Simon's male soloists group in the live finals

Scott Bruton - It's not that much of a drastic transformation for Scott who retains his cheeky chappie look, although his trademark earrings seem to have mysteriously disappeared. Scott revealed that he is really looking forward to the first live shows and promises to give the performance of his life

Austin Drage - It's 21-year-old Austin who's undergone the most jaw-dropping image change after the makeovers, from spiky-haired Essex lad to flick-fringed 80s-style crooner, it's all gone a bit Flock of Seagulls for Austin. He revealed initial doubts about his drastic image overhaul: "At first I wasn't sure, but it's grown on me. It was a lot of fun to do. And, you know, it's a hairstyle. I'm not going to be Duran Duran for the rest of my life!"
