التقت الممثلة الأمريكية الشهيرة وسفيرة النوايا الحسنة لدى مفوضية الأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين أنجلينا جولي ضحايا الفيضانات في شمال غرب باكستان، لجلب مزيد من الاهتمام الدولي لمعاناتهم، والدعوة لتقديم دعم أكثر لمساعدة البلاد على التعافي من أسوأ كوارثها الطبيعية.

وقامت جولي بجولة في منطقة خيبر على الحدود الأفغانية ومناطق قريبة من بيشاور، في إطار زيارتها كمبعوث شخصي لمفوض الأمم المتحدة السامي لشؤون اللاجئين أنطونيو غوتيريس.

Liz Hurley leads the glamour pack as Hollywood and royalty attend Elephant Parade auction

When Elizabeth Hurley is invited to an event, you can usually assume she'll be one of the best dressed on the guest list.

Attending the Elephant Parade auction at the Royal Hospital Gardens in London tonight, the 45-year-old model put on another stunning red carpet performance in a hot pink dress.

Instead of her trademark slashed-to-the-thigh gown, the Austin Powers star was wear a cowl-neck fuchsia floor-length dress and silver high-heeled sandals.

Joining Hurley at the glitzy bash at the home of the Chelsea Pensioners was husband Arun Nayar and her good friend Trinny Woodall.

Style guru Woodall, 46, also adopted a similar dress code to her friend by teaming a pink and purple vintage-style silk gown with a pair of silver shoes.

While the charity event attracted many Chelsea locals like Hurley and Woodall, also in attendance was Hollywood veteran Goldie Hawn, socialite Tamara Beckwith, model Lisa B and young royals Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Having flown in from the United States specially to host the fundraiser, Goldie, 64, rolled back the years in a floral tiered gown.

The Private Benjamin star is an official patron of the Elephant Family charity, who are raising money to protect the endangered Asian elephant.

But last week they were relocated to the manicured lawns of the Royal Hospital ahead of the auction tonight.

Speaking about the campaign, Hawn said: 'Anyone who loves elephants, and I do, will love Elephant Parade. It is not only the most beautiful, colourful and fun campaign, it also holds the key to saving the majestic species from extinction.'

Notably absent from the event was Hawn's fellow patron Sarah Ferguson, who is keeping a low-profile since she was caught on camera allegedly asking for money to be introduced to her ex-husband Prince Andrew.

Instead the shamed royal was represented by her daughters. Clearly feeling more confident with her figure as her recent weight loss, Princess Beatrice, 21, opted for a flirty yellow mini-dress.

Her younger sister Eugenie, 20, was equally summery in a simple white T-shirt dress.

Arriving at the Royal Hospital, the glamorous guests were presented with Indian flower garlands before being invited to stroll through the rows of colourful elephant sculptures.

Boyfriends and a career can wait... meet the twin who's given up everything to care for her sister

As identical twins, there was little Lyndsey and Ella Jane Noden didn't do together. But in June 2001, their parallel lives were torn apart. After a night out to celebrate their 20th birthdays, Ella was attacked by a stranger and sustained such serious head injuries that doctors believed that, even if she did survive, she would never walk or talk again.

And, in an incredible act of selflessness, when she did pull through, Lyndsey, now 28, decided to give up her own ambitions to care for her sister full-time.

And while other women Lyndsey's age are climbing the career ladder or at home enjoying motherhood, she is devoted to Ella - and even refuses to go on dates in case it compromises her ability to care for her - which is why Lyndsey's story has been highlighted by the Mail in our Carer of the Year Awards.

It is thanks to this devotion that Ella is now able to walk, talk and has a chance of successfully rehabilitating herself back into society. And Lyndsey, who lives with her sister in Liverpool, says she didn't think twice.

'I see myself as one half of a whole,' she says adamantly. 'Such is my gratitude that she survived the attack, I would now do anything for her.

'During the three weeks that Ella was in a coma I used to beg her to wake up and whisper that I couldn't go on without her. From the moment she opened her eyes I knew I'd do whatever it took to make sure she was well and happy.'

Lyndsey says she can't remember a single day that didn't revolve around her and her sister being together. But the attack changed everything.

'We'd been out with friends,' says Lyndsey. 'And were on our way home when I turned round to see Ella being punched by a man in the street. It was a completely random attack and, as if in slow motion, she flew into the air and came crashing down to the ground. I screamed and rushed to her side, to find she was struggling to breathe.'

Ella was rushed to hospital in Wrexham where doctors said she had a potentially fatal blood clot on the brain and needed emergency surgery. 'I was told to prepare for the worst, says Lyndsey. 'It was the first time I'd ever contemplated life without Ella and I couldn't bear it.'

While the operation was a success, Ella remained in a coma for the next three weeks with Lyndsey at her side every day.

'Mum tried to console me by telling me that I would have a family of my own one day, and there was a future ahead of me if Ella didn't survive. But I felt that our lives were dependent on each other.

'So, when her finger eventually twitched - a sign that she wasn't brain dead - I actually felt life flood back into me, too. I knew the worst wasn't over, but it was the first small step.'

When Ella regained consciousness she was paralysed down her left side, unable to communicate, and the doctor said she would never walk or talk again. But she defied the bleak prognosis - six weeks after the attack she greeted her sister with the words: 'Hello Lynn.'

Lyndsey recalls: 'I hugged her so tightly and over the next three months, I spent every day at the hospital. But although she could utter a few words, most of the time she was incoherent. She wasn't the Ella I used to know. She had become very childlike.'

After intense physio and occupational therapy, Ella was well enough to go home in September 2001. Thanks to the hard work of her family and the doctors she was able to walk with a crutch, but her short-term memory was damaged and she suffered from epileptic fits.

In the meantime, a local man had been arrested and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm. Although Lyndsey was overjoyed to bring Ella home, reality soon sank in. 'I began to realise my sister as I knew her had gone,' she says.

'Mum, who divorced our father amicably when we were four, was working in a hotel and looking after our two younger brothers, so much of Ella's care fell to me. The biggest change was that I had to babysit her. She had a mental age of a child under ten, and behavioural problems - she'd lost all self-control.

'When out, she would take sweets from strangers, forget to pay for things and wouldn't look before crossing the road. She'd also say inappropriate things, such as telling a shop assistant she was fat. She was totally different to the sweet-natured, shy Ella I'd grown up with.'

As a result, Lyndsey was forced to take on a more motherly role. She had to help feed and dress her sister and began to realise her own plans, including boyfriends, would have to be put on hold. 'It was hard because we'd always been equals, but now I had to tell her off. She would get angry at the drop of a hat, and hit out at me or smash things around the house. We'd never rowed before and it broke my heart.'

Meanwhile, because of her brain damage, Ella was unable to give evidence against the man who attacked her and he was acquitted on medical grounds: 'It was so frustrating, but I knew the most important thing was focusing on Ella's recovery,' says Lyndsey.

Ten months after the attack, in March 2002, Lyndsey decided to take on the role of Ella's full-time carer. She was just 21. 'I would do anything for my sister, but it was difficult. By that point, Ella could feed and dress herself, but her behaviour was out of control.'

In 2003, Lyndsey began to struggle with the strain and suffered several panic attacks. In October, on the advice of her GP, she started counselling to help her come to terms with what had happened to Ella and what this meant for her own future.

Through counselling, Lyndsey also realised that she and Ella needed to move away from where the attack had taken place and make a fresh start.

In January 2005, the girls moved from Wrexham to Liverpool, where they spent their early childhood, and where they still had family and friends.

But this meant Lyndsey was now 40 miles from her mum and solely responsible for Ella.

'My daily routine revolves around her,' says Lyndsey. 'After I've made her breakfast, we'll go through her post together, and I'll deal with all her bills and explain letters she can't understand. She goes to college three times a week to relearn basic skills such as maths and reading, while I work as a waitress.

'We text each other throughout the day so that I know she's OK. In the evening, I help her with her homework and cook a meal.

'But she's made incredible progress and is now able to cook and walk to the shop by herself. A new start really helped and her outbursts have subsided. She's never got angry about the attack or asked why it happened to her.'

But what of Lyndsey's own plans for her future? She says: 'I can't think about a future independent of Ella. At the moment I just want to be with my sister.

'Although my life has gone in a different direction than I expected, the only resentment I've ever felt is towards her attacker, and the fact that justice was never served.

'Every day, we laugh and are really happy together. I love Ella unconditionally and am only doing what anyone in my situation would do.'

'Man with the golden arm' saves 2million babies in half a century of donating rare type of blood

An Australian man who has been donating his extremely rare kind of blood for 56 years has saved the lives of more than two million babies.

James Harrison, 74, has an antibody in his plasma that stops babies dying from Rhesus disease, a form of severe anaemia.

He has enabled countless mothers to give birth to healthy babies, including his own daughter, Tracey, who had a healthy son thanks to her father's blood.

Mr Harrison has been giving blood every few weeks since he was 18 years old and has now racked up a total of 984 donations.

When he started donating, his blood was deemed so special his life was insured for one million Australian dollars.

He was also nicknamed the 'man with the golden arm' or the 'man in two million'.

His blood has since led to the development of a vaccine called Anti-D.

He said: 'I've never thought about stopping. Never.' He made a pledge to be a donor aged 14 after undergoing major chest surgery in which he needed 13 litres of blood.

'I was in hospital for three months,' he said. 'The blood I received saved my life so I made a pledge to give blood when I was 18.'

Just after he started donating he was found to have the rare and life-saving antibody in his blood.

At the time, thousands of babies in Australia were dying each year of Rhesus disease. Other newborns suffered permanent brain damage because of the condition.

The disease creates an incompatibility between the mother's blood and her unborn baby's blood. It stems from one having Rh-positive blood and the other Rh-negative.

After his blood type was discovered, Mr Harrison volunteered to undergo a series of tests to help develop the Anti-D vaccine.

'They insured me for a million dollars so I knew my wife Barbara would be taken care of,' he said.

'I wasn't scared. I was glad to help. I had to sign every form going and basically sign my life away.'

 

Mr Harrison is Rh-negative and was given injections of Rh-positive blood.

It was found his plasma could treat the condition and since then it has been given to hundreds of thousands of women.

It has also been given to babies after they are born to stop them developing the disease.

It is estimated he has helped save 2.2 million babies so far.

One of the mothers he has helped is Joy Barnes, who works at the Red Cross Blood Bank in Sydney.

 

She has known Mr Harrison for 23 years but has only just told him she is one of the countless mothers he has helped.

Ms Barnes, who miscarried at four and five months before having treatment, said: 'Without him I would never have been able to have a healthy baby.'

Speaking to Mr Harrison on an Australian TV show, she said: 'I don't know how to thank you enough.'

His own daughter, Tracey, also had to have the Anti-D injection after the birth of her first son.

She said she was 'proud' of her dad for continuing to give blood, even after the death of her mother after 56 years of marriage.

Mr Harrison said: 'I was back in hospital giving blood a week after Barbara passed away.

'It was sad but life marches on and we have to continue doing what we do. She's up there looking down, so I carry on.'

Mr Harrison is expected to reach the 1,000 donation milestone in September this year.

    بيع زوج من الاحذية الرياضية ارتداه قائد منتخب اليابان السابق هيديتوشي ناكاتا بنحو 1.5 مليون دولار لصالح جهود اغاثة ضحايا زلزال هايتي.

وأجري مزاد على الحذاء الذي ارتداه ناكاتا امام كرواتيا في نهائيات كأس العالم 2006 في المانيا على الانترنت ليساعد في جهود الاغاثة عقب زلزال مدمر ضرب هايتي في 12 يناير كانون الثاني الماضي تشير تقديرات الحكومة المحلية هناك انه حصد ارواح نحو 300 الف شخص.

وكانت اليابان قد تعادلت في مباراتها امام كرواتيا سلبيا قبل ان يعلن ناكاتا وهو يبكي اعتزاله بشكل مفاجيء بعد ان سحقت البرازيل منتخب اليابان 4-1 في المباراة التالية ليودع محاربو الساموراي النهائيات.

نيكول ريتشي تعلن خطوبتها من جويل مايدن

    أعلنت النجمة الأميركية نيكول ريتشي نبأ خطوبتها من صديقها المغني جويل مايدن.

وأكدت ريتشي نبأ الخطوبة في مقابلة في برنامج "لايت شو مع ديفيد ليترمان".

وذكر موقع "يو أس مغازين" أن مايدن كتب رسالة على موقع "تويتر" قال فيها " أجل، أنا مخطوب وسعيد جداً...".

ونقل الموقع عن مصدر مقرب من النجمين أنهما يحضران للزفاف ومن المتوقع أن يتزوجا هذا الصيف، لافتاً إلى أن ريتشي سعيدة جداً.

يذكر أن علاقة ريتشي ومايدن العاطفية بدأت في كانون الأول/ديسمبر عام 2006 .

Nicole Richie has confirmed she is engaged to boyfriend Joel Madden.

The 28-year-old confirmed the engagement during a taping of The Late Show With David Letterman on Monday, after the chat show host asked if she and the Good Charlotte rocker were married.

Letterman then asked if Nicole and Joel planned to tie the knot, and she said: "We actually recently are engaged, yes."

Earlier this week Joel let slip on Twitter that he and Nicole were engaged.

The rocker said the couple had been engaged for a while but had managed to keep it secret, and although the tweets were later removed, it seems he regretted spilling the beans, telling followers the next day: "Just woke up. I'm screwed. Oh boy."

The couple, who have been dating since 2006, have two children - daughter Harlow, two, and son Sparrow, five months.

سكارليت يوهانسون تصمم حقيبة لصالح ضحايا الزلزال في هايتي

    صممت الممثلة الأمريكية الشهيرة سكارليت جوهانسون حقيبة يد "لأهداف خيرية".

وذكرت تقارير إعلامية أمريكية أن جوهانسون /25 عاما/ صممت حقيبة يد لصالح علامة الأزياء الأسبانية "مانغو" لتذهب أرباحها لصالح ضحايا الزلزال في هايتي.

وأضافت التقارير أن الحقيبة الجديدة مطبوع عليها خريطة قديمة لهايتي ومكتوب عليها "دعم شعب هايتي" ، كما تحمل توقيع جوهانسون. ومن المقرر أن يتم طرح الحقائب في أكثر من 1390 متجرا في أنحاء العالم في آذار/مارس المقبل.

وسيذهب جزء من أرباح تلك الحقائب ، التي يبلغ ثمن الواحدة منها 20 يورو ، لصالح منظمة "أوكسفام".

ونقلت التقارير عن جوهانسون القول: "بشراء حقيبة من الحقائب التي قمت بتصميمها خصيصا لهذا المشروع فإنه سيتم المساهمة في إنقاذ حياة الناس في هايتي ، وذلك عبر إمداد مياه الشرب، على سبيل المثال".

REM's Everybody Hurts to be Simon Cowell's charity Haiti single... as stars line up to take part

Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John are on the A-list of stars approached to sing on a charity cover of REM's Everybody Hurts, spearheaded by Simon Cowell.

The Beatles legend, 67, and Elton, 62, are close to signing up to join Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, Take That and Alexandra Burke, alongside X Factor winner Joe McElderry on the single.

All funds raised will be split between charities the Disasters Emergency Committee and Helping Haiti/ Medicins Sans Frontiers.

Leona Lewis said: 'You can definitely count me in. What's happened is absolutely heartbreaking and I really hope everyone pulls together to help.'

Cowell, 50, told the Mail: ‘We have a short time to do this and the people in Haiti need as much help as we can give them, as soon as possible.

‘I'd like to make this record with as many different types of singers as we can and I hope everyone in the industry comes together to get involved.’

Apart from getting his own artists from his Syco label on board, Cowell has also spoken to record chiefs at Universal, and their artists Cheryl Cole and Take That will also sing.

The list of stars has yet to be confirmed but Cowell can be expected to call on artists who have performed on the X Factor, including McCartney and Robbie Williams.

U2 and Jay-Z have already recorded their own charity record, which they will perform at George Clooney's Hope For Haiti telethon today in the States - to be shown on MTV in the UK.

And Lionel Richie is planning a 25th anniversary re-recording of We Are The World, featuring Usher, Natalie Cole and John Legend, amongst others.

Richie will team up with producer Quincy Jones to make the single, with all proceeds going to fund Haiti relief efforts.

Downing Street confirmed that VAT would be waived on the single when it is released.

Gordon Brown said he believes the single will make a 'huge' amount of money for the rescue efforts.

'I have already talked to Simon Cowell and I said there would be an exemption from VAT for a charity single,' said the Prime Minister.

'The agony and anguish for the people that we are seeing on our television screens is something that British people want to respond to.

'Simon Cowell can make a huge amount of money to help the people of Haiti.'

The Haiti earthquake has been like a waking call for the fallibility of human life. The way things change drastically when nature shows its wrath for less than 60 seconds. Nope. We do not see it as pessimism, but more like realism.     أعلن منظمو حفل هوب فور هايتي( أمل هايتي) في وقت متأخر من يوم السبت أن الحفل تمكن من جمع 58 مليون دولار من أجل مساعدات الاغاثة الموجهة لهايتي التي تعرضت لزلزال قوي وذلك في غضون أربعة وعشرين ساعة من افتتاحه.وبدأ الحفل ليلة الجمعة وبثت على شاشات التلفزيون وشارك فيها أكثر من مئة من أبرز نجوم السينما والتلفزيون والموسيقى وشوهد في أنحاء العالم.وجمع هذا الحفل أموالا أكثر مما تم جمعه في أي حفلة لجمع التبرعات في السابقولا يشمل هذا المبلغ تبرعات الشركات ولا التبرعات الخاصة الكبيرة أو عائدات تحميل الاغاني الخاصة بالحفل من موقع اي تيونز .وقال منظمو الحفل إن البوم اغاني الحفل تصدر قائمة أكبر الالبومات تحميلا يوم السبت في 18 دولة.ويمكن للافراد الاستمرار في التبرع لمدة ستة أشهر من خلال الموقع الالكتروني أو الرسائل النصية.

'Hope For Haiti' Will Top Billboard 200

s forecasted last Friday, the "Hope For Haiti Now" benefit album will debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart that will be issued on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Though the chart has not been finished yet, industry sources suggest that the 20-track "Haiti" album sold close to 150,000 downloads in the week that just ended on Sunday, Jan. 24. The telethon has already raised $57 million for Haitian relief.

The set, featuring performances culled from last Friday's massive "Hope For Haiti Now" telethon, only reached digital distributors over the weekend, making its sales number all the more impressive. The "Haiti" set will win over Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream," which had been tipped to return to No. 1 with around 80,000 sold.

The "Haiti" set, available exclusively through digital retailers, will be the first digital-only album to top the Billboard 200 in the chart's nearly 54-year history.

All of these sales figures are projections from industry sources based on internal data. The real, final Nielsen SoundScan numbers, as reflected in the Billboard 200 album chart, won't be released until Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Kiki, the icon of hope in the rubble

No Hollywood director could have improved on the scene that was splashed across the pages of this and just about every other newspaper 24 hours ago.

No reader could have turned the page without pausing, smiling, perhaps even shedding a tear.

That one photograph summed up the horror and - yes - the hope of what has befallen Haiti.

The crushed masonry that formed the backdrop illustrated the power that created this tragedy.

The determination of the rescuers who have laboured so mightily for so long was there too: sweat creasing the dust that lined their faces after their heroic efforts to find another survivor.

At the centre of the picture: a little boy called Kiki.

He is seven years old and he is beaming, his crooked tooth exposed in a smile as wide as his outstretched arms.

His huge brown eyes sunk deep into his face tell of the suffering he must have endured since his world came crashing down on him eight days earlier, but the smile overshadows everything.

It is directed at a stick thin woman reaching out to him. His mother.

We cannot see her face, but we can see the faces of Kiki's rescuers - well-fed Americans who have left their comfortable homes in the world's richest country to dig for survivors of an earthquake in one of the world's poorest.

Mostly they find only bodies. But not this time. And some of them, too, have their arms outstretched like Kiki.

Others applaud. Some appear stunned by what they have done. As well they might be.

This is a picture of joy. It is almost biblical. Almost a resurrection scene or the raising of Lazarus that might have been painted by Caravaggio or Rembrandt.

If there is one image that stays in our minds when the world's attention has moved on from Haiti it will surely be this one. But why?

Why should it not be the picture of another Haitian child who also survived the earthquake?

Her name is Wideline. There is no mother stretching out her arms to her - she died in the earthquake and so did her father and their home was utterly destroyed.

Wideline's only possession is the red tartan dress she wears. When she was asked how she was feeling she whispered only two words: 'hungry' and 'scared'.

Wideline is infinitely more representative of what happened to Haiti than little Kiki.

There are tens of thousands of children like her facing a bleak future and they will need our help for a very long time to come.

But her picture will recede along with countless others like it.

If not Wideline, why should the enduring image of the earthquake not be the doctors working against impossible odds to save the thousands who were so dreadfully injured?

Paul McMaster, a British surgeon working with that heroic organisation Medicins Sans Frontieres, described how one of the most urgent tasks facing him and his colleagues was finding somewhere to buy a new hacksaw.

 

They needed to replace the one they had been using to amputate the crushed limbs of people who would otherwise die from gangrene. They had used it so often it was no longer sharp enough.

A picture of good, selfless men and women dedicated to relieving pain in the worst possible conditions should certainly live on, but it will not.

Just as Wideline and the surgeons will surely fade from our collective memories, so will the other images of the earthquake: the mass graves and bodies in the streets; the buildings crushed and the looters being shot.

But Kiki and his rescue will remain and that, from one perspective, is wrong.

The enduring image of the Vietnam War was also a small child: nine year-old Kim Phuc fleeing naked from her village after a napalm attack, screaming in agony from the burns to her skin.

It will remind us for ever of the horror of warfare waged with such vile weapons and of the suffering of the innocent. And we need to be reminded.

But Kiki was the exception in Haiti. Only a tiny handful have been rescued compared with the vast numbers who died under the rubble.

Why should we focus so much attention on him at the risk of distorting in our memories the real picture?

I think it's because it answers a deep need in every one of us to believe in the nobility of humanity.

It operates on so many different levels. On one level we feel awe and humility at the love of a mother who simply refuses to abandon hope.

Kiki's mother, Ena, was told there was no chance that her son and his sister Sabina, who was buried with him, could have survived.

It is rare for even strong adults to last for more than three or four days without a drop of water and, even if they had not had the life crushed out of them, it was virtually inconceivable that they could still be alive eight days later.

But Ena refused to accept the verdict of the experts and she would not leave the ruin of her home.

Her reward was, in one sense, a reward for everyone who saw that photograph.

And the photograph speaks to something even deeper inside us.

It touches the core of our spirituality - even those of us who have no religion. Perhaps especially those of us who have no religion.

I have written in these pages before about how my own experiences as a journalist helped destroy what little faith I had in God.

The first - and still the worst - disaster on which I reported was Aberfan in 1966 when a massive coal tip slid down the valley and crushed an infants' school.

It killed 144 people and 116 of them were children.

At the time I thought the image that would stay in my mind was the sight that greeted me when I arrived: hundreds of miners, their faces still black with coal dust, digging through the filthy waste for their own children.

Or perhaps the small coffins being carried from the church days later.

But it was not. The image at the forefront of my mind remains that of a big, burly policeman carrying a little girl, his helmet askew, one shoe dangling from her foot.

She was alive. There was hope. She had managed to cheat death.

There is, deep within all of us, the desire to do the same - no matter how much our rational mind may tell us it is nonsense.

It pervades our literature - from the myth of Orpheus, who visited the underworld and survived, through to Terry Pratchett' s latest novel, millennia later, in which the heroine brings back her friend from the dead.

It is at the heart of Christianity; the risen Christ, the belief that it is possible to roll the boulder away from the tomb and overcome the cross, has endured for 2,000 years.

And that is the essence of the photograph of Kiki's rescue.

That's why it has such a powerful resonance. It represents, at the deepest level, a victory over death.

There is another way of putting it. It gives us hope.

نجوم الفن العالمي يقدمون برنامجاً خيرياً لصالح ضحايا زلزال هايتي

    على نغمات موسيقية حزينة ناشد عشرات من نجوم السينما والتلفزيون العالميين التبرع لضحايا زلزال هايتي خلال برنامج تلفزيوني خيري قدمه النجم السينمائي الأمريكي جورج كلوني ومغني الراب المولود في هايتي ويسليف جان.

وعرض البرنامج الذي استمر لمدة ساعتين باسم "الأمل من أجل هايتي الآن: حفلا خيريا عالميا لمساعدة جهود الإنقاذ من الزلزال" في شتى أنحاء العالم يوم الجمعة على شاشات التلفزيون وعلى الانترنت وعبر الهواتف المحمولة وشارك به أكثر من مئة شخصية مشهورة حيث قدموا عروضا من نيويورك ولوس أنجليس ولندن.

وافتتحت البرنامج المغنية أليشا كيز باحدى أغنياتها قبل أن يوجه كلوني أحد أبرز منظمي البرنامج الخيري أول كلمة تلقى خلال الليلة حيث قال:

"لماذ؟ هذا هو السؤال الذي يطرحه الكثيرون، لماذا نعطي أكثر؟، لماذا يفترض أن نساعد في إعادة بناء بلد يعيش 80% من سكانه بأقل من دولارين يومياً، وأكثر من 3 ملايين نسمة من دون مياه نظيفة وطفل من كل 3 يموت قبل بلوغ الخامسة من العمر".

وأضاف "إذا عانت هايتي كثيراً من قبل، لماذا يفترض أن نؤمن بأننا قادرون على التغيير الآن، هذه مأساة تصل إلى كل مكان، إلى كل الحدود وتتطلب اهتمامنا ومساعدتنا وتعاطفنا بصفتنا بشراً.. هذه فرصة لمساعدة الجار المحتاج ويجب أن نقوم بذلك بمهارة وكرم وحب ".من جهته قال ويكليف "بلدي في ألم كبير وأعلم انه بإمكانكم المساعدة، يجب أن ننهض من التراب لذا رجاء أعطوا ما لديكم".

وتضمن البرنامج الذي كان يهدف إلى جمع أكبر حشد جماهيري على الاطلاق مشاركات موسيقية وروايات عن الخسارة أو النجاة من كوارث وممثلين قدموا تبرعات عبر الهاتف في حين أذاع أيضا لقطات ومقابلات صادمة مع سكان هايتي.

ومن لندن أهدى مغني الراب الأمريكي جاي زي أغنية قدمها مع بونو مغني فريق يو تو الغنائي.

وقبله غنت المغنية الأمريكية بيونسه أغنيتها (هالو) مع عزف لكريس مارتن على البيانو.

ومن بين المغنين الآخرين الذين شاركوا في البرنامج الخيري مادونا وماري جيه بلبيدج وتيلور سويفت وشاكيرا وستينج وجنيفر هدسون.

والممثلون بينهم ليوناردو دي كابريو الذي كان أحد المتبرعين بمليون دولار الأسبوع الماضي لهايتي ودينزل واشنطن ونيكول كيدمان.

وستقسم عائدت البرنامج الخيري بين منظمات الاغاثة وبينها صندوق كلينتون - بوش من أجل هايتي الذي أطلقه الرئيسان السابقان بيل كلينتون وجورج بوش وبرنامج الأغذية العالمي التابع للأمم المتحدة والصليب الأحمر وصندوق الأمم المتحدة للطفولة (يونيسيف).

وتقدر منظمات الإغاثة أن ثلث سكان هايتي ومجموعهم تسعة ملايين نسمة بحاجة إلى مساعدات غذائية ومياه ومأوى لفترة طويلة.وتولى الرد على اتصالات المشاهدين للتبرع كبار الممثلين مثل جاك نيكولسون ،ورينغو سيتار، وتوبي مغواير ،وروبن وليامز،و ميغ راين ،وكولن فاريلن وشيفي شايشن وإيميلي بلانت، وجاك بلاك ،وتيم روبنز، وستيفن سبيلبيرغ ،وايلين ديجينيريس ،وميل غيبسون، وجنيفر أنيستون ،وبن أفليك، وبيلي كريستال ،وجوليا روبرتس ،وريز ويذرسبون، وجون كراسينسكي، وصامويل جاكسون، وآندي غارسيا.

أما المغنون النجوم فضموا مادونا ،وكولدبلاي ،وبروس سبرينغستين، وستيفي وندر، وشاكيرا ،وجون ليجاند ،وتايلور سويفت، وكريستينا أغيليرا، وستينغ ،وبيونسي ،وشيريل كرو ،وكيث أوربن، وكيد روك، وجاستن تيمبرلايك، وجنيفر هدسون.يشار إلى ان الزلزال الذي ضرب هايتي كان بقوة 7 درجات وخلف دماراً كبيراً ومئات آلاف القتلى والجرحى ومئات آلاف المشردين.وكان الرئيس الأميركي السابق بيل كلينتون والنجوم هالي بيري ،وليوناردو ديكابريو، وجون ستيوارت ،ونيكول كيدمان، وروبرت باتيسون ،ومورغان فريمان ،وكلينت إيستوود ،ومات ديمون ،وبن ستيلر ،وبراد بيت، وتوم هانكس ،ودنزل واشنطن من بين

النجوم الذين نقلوا قصص بطولة تفطر القلب من هايتي.وختم ويكبيف جين البرنامج بالقول "يكفي كآبة" قبل أن ينشد أغنية تقول كلماتها: ان زلزالا يهز الأرض لكن روح الشعب الهايتي لن تنكسر يوماً.

ومن جهتها ستطرح نجمة البوب الامريكية بريتني سبيرز للبيع بالمزاد العلني ثوبا ارتدته خلال ادائها عرض عودتها للاضواء في عام 2008 لصالح جهود الاغاثة من الزلزال الذي ضرب هايتي.كما نجحت تشيلسي ابنة الرئيس الأميركي الأسبق بيل كلينتون بالاشتراك مع نادي "سول سايكل" الرياضي بجمع أكثر من 66 ألف دولار لمساعدة المتضررين من الزلزال وذلك من خلال إقامة صف تدريب رياضي خاص في نيويورك.

نسخة جديدة من نشيد 'نحن العالم' لدعم ضحايا زلزال هايتي

    يسعى النجمان الأميركيان كوينسي جونز وليونيل ريتشي لحشد عدد كاف من النجوم في لوس أنجلوس لتسجيل نسخة جديدة من نشيد "نحن العالم" الذي دعم قضية الفقر في إفريقيا في ثمانينيات القرن الماضي وسيدعم هذه المرة ضحايا زلزال هايتي.

وأفادت صحيفة "هوليوود ريبورتر" الأميركية ان جونز وريتشي يحاولان اختيار نجوم مثل آشر وناتالي كول وجون ليجاند لتسجيل النسخة الجديدة من الأغنية في 1 فبراير المقبل أي في اليوم الذي يلي حفل توزيع جوائز "غرامي".

يشار إلى ان جونز وريتشي سبق وعملا مع ملك البوب الأميركي الراحل مايكل جاكسون في العام 1985 لتأليف وتسجيل النشيد الذي شارك فيه عشرات النجوم ومن بينهم ستيفي وندر وبيلي جويل وتينا ترنر وديانا روس بهدف جمع المال لمساعدة فقراء إفريقيا.

وذكرت "هوليوود ريبورتر" ان ريع مبيعات النشيد الجديد سيخصص لمساعدة المتضررين من زلزال هايتي المدمر الذي شرد مئات الآلاف وخلف دماراً وعشرات الآلاف من الضحاياً .

وأفادت ان بعض النجوم الذين قد ينضمون للمشروع هم ستيغ وفيرغي وويكليف جين وألشا كيز وجاستن تيمبرلايك.

صحافي يجري عملية جراحية في الدماغ لطفلة هايتية

    أجرى صحافي-جراح يعتبر احد ابرز نجوم شبكة "سي ان ان" الاميركية يوم الاثنين عملية جراحية دقيقة في الدماغ لطفلة هايتية في الثانية عشرة من العمر على متن حاملة طائرات اميركية رابضة قبالة سواحل بور او برنس.

وكان الطاقم الطبي على متن حاملة الطائرات الاميركية "يو.اس.اس. كارل فنسون" اجرى عملية جراحية اولى للطفلة، التي لم يكشف عن هويتها، الا انه تبين له لاحقا ضرورة اخضاعها لعملية ثانية بسبب وجود شظية بطول 1,2 سنتيمتر في جمجمة الفتاة.

ونظرا لعدم وجود جراح اعصاب على متن الحاملة ولا في منطقة بور او برنس المدمرة جراء الزلزال الذي ضربها في 12 كانون الثاني/يناير، لم تجد البحرية الاميركية امامها الا ان تطلب العون من سنجاي غوبتا، وهو طبيب في قسم جراحة الاعصاب في احد مستشفيات اتلانتا (جورجيا، جنوب شرق الولايات المتحدة) وفي الوقت عينه صحافي طبي في شبكة "سي ان ان" وقد كان في بور او برنس يغطي الكارثة.

وقال اريك شنايدر المتحدث باسم حاملة الطائرات "لقد اتصلنا باتلانتا (حيث مقر شبكة سي ان ان) ووفروا لنا الاتصال بالدكتور غوبتا في بور او برنس".

وبحسب المشاهد التي بثتها الشبكة فقد وضع الصحافي (40 عاما) قفازاته الطبية وباشر، بمعية جراح آخر من طاقم الحاملة، باجراء العملية الجراحية التي نقلت الشبكة وقائعها.

واثر انتهاء العملية اكد غوبتا انه تم سحب الشظية من جمجمة الفتاة وتنظيف جرحها.

وقال "يشرفني ان اكون قد مددت يد المساعدة".

وسبق لغوبتا ان شارك في تغطية حربي افغانستان والعراق حيث اجرى خصوصا خمس عمليات جراحية، وقد اختاره الرئيس الاميركي باراك اوباما السنة الماضية ليكون مديرا عاما للصحة العامة في ادارته الا ان الصحافي-الطبيب رفض المنصب.

Doctor or journalist? Roles become blurred in Haiti

As aid flows to Haiti and the full scope of the disaster becomes clear, there is an interesting discussion happening among health journalists about the role of medical correspondents reporting from the scene of such disasters.

Physicians who work for television networks and have been sent to Haiti have been juggling their roles as doctors and reporters:

• CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta examined a 15-day-old baby on the air and did surgery on a girl with a skull fracture. After Belgian doctors dispatched to a field hospital later abandoned their post and patients, Gupta spent the night as the only physician stabilizing patients.
• NBC’s Dr. Nancy Snyderman operated on people in a makeshift clinic.
• ABC’s Dr. Richard Besser, recently acting director of the CDC, helped a woman who had gone into labor.
• Dr. Jennifer Ashton of CBS assisted in surgery on a girl after who had undergone an amputation.

Footage of all of those correspondents treating patients has aired on their networks and Web sites, raising the question of whether “news organizations at some point appear to be capitalizing for promotional reasons on the intervention by journalists,” according to Bob Steele, journalism values scholar at the Poynter Institute.

Matea Gold, of the Los Angeles Times, reported on the topic and has thoughts from Steele, Snyderman, Besser and CNN’s president about the issue.

Gary Schwitzer, of the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism & Mass Communication and publisher of HealthNewsReview.org, asks “Who teaches journalism ethics to physician-reporters?” and has “An examination of the ethics of MD-reporter involvement in Haiti.”

In an online chat today, three readers asked Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz about the medical and journalistic ethics of treating patients on camera. Kurtz responded that he has “mixed feelings” about it. Interestingly, on Kurtz’s CNN show, “Reliable Sources,” that aired on Sunday, he used a clip of Gupta examining the 15-day-old baby as an example of how the media is focusing on Haiti’s children but did not comment on the ethical issue of physician-journalists treating patients.

Rahul K. Parikh, M.D., a doctor who regularly writes for Salon.com, writes about Gupta taking responsibility for the patients who were left alone by the Belgian medical team:

Cynics may sneer that Gupta’s decision to stay was a self-promotional act intended to boost ratings and his profile, that his nobility was inspired more by the eye of the camera than the Hippocratic oath. But don’t count me among those skeptics; I believe those lives were, literally, in Gupta’s hands, and he responded.

The Washington Post now has an article about reporters who double as doctors in Haiti that includes comments from the president of CBS News, who says “that competitive issues have factored in boosting Ashton’s role since Gupta became a star,” and from the director of the Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin’s journalism school, who cautions that such coverage can become self-promotional

ثلاثة أطفال يختفون من حضانتهم في ألمانيا للقيام برحلة إلى أفريقيا

نورنبرج (ألمانيا) - (د ب أ):

    قرر ثلاثة أطفال في ألمانيا ترك دار الحضانة خلال اليوم الدراسي من أجل "القيام برحلة إلى أفريقيا".

وقالت مصادر الشرطة امس الخميس في مدينة نورنبرج إن المعلمات في دار الحضانة لاحظن اختفاء الأطفال الثلاثة الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين خمسة وستة أعوام يوم الأربعاء وأبلغن الشرطة على الفور. وشاركت مروحية في عمليات البحث عن الأطفال الثلاثة الذين يبدو أنهم يعشقون المغامرات.

وبعد فترة عثرت إحدى المارات على الأطفال الثلاثة وأعادتهم مرة أخرى للحضانة. وقال الأطفال للمعلمات في الحضانة إنهم كانوا في طريقهم إلى المطار لركوب الطائرة والسفر إلى أفريقيا ولكنهم أرادوا أولا التوقف في أحد محلات بيع لعب الأطفال.

    أعلنت شركة "هايبرد ريكوردز" المصرية الانتهاء من تجهيز أحدث ألبوماتها الغنائية الذي يجمع ويعيد تقديم أشكال متنوعة من التراث الموسيقي المصري من إقليم النوبة والسودان جنوبا وحتى الإسكندرية شمالا بشكل جديد عصري ممزوج بأحدث تقنيات الموسيقى الغربية.

وقالت الشركة في بيان وصل وكالة الأنباء الألمانية (د.ب.أ) إن الألبوم بعنوان "زينوبه" وتقرر إطلاقه في أيار/مايو القادم "بعد 5 سنوات من الجهود المتواصلة في إعداده" حيث تعاقدت الشركة مع إحدى الشركات العالمية ليتم توزيع الألبوم على أكثر من 400 موقع على شبكة الإنترنت.

ويضم الألبوم مغنيي الفن الشعبي بكل أشكاله من مختلف أنحاء مصر من الفن النوبي والصعيدي والفلاحي والبدوي والصوفي وصولا إلى الفن الشعبي لمدن القناة والوجه البحري. ويقدم المغنون الموسيقى التراثية كما تربوا ونشئوا عليها في النوبة أو الصعيد أو الصحراء.

وطرحت الشركة أول أغنية من الألبوم واسمها "ياما دقت" كفيديو كليب للدعاية للألبوم قبل طرحه ويقوم بغنائها المطرب الصعيدي الكفيف عارف شوقي وتدور حول الصعاب التي تواجه الإنسان بشكل متواصل وكفاحه وتغلبه عليها وأيضا عن الحب ولوعته وعدم اهتمامه بما يقال عنه ، وتختلط فيها موسيقى الربابة والناي الشرقي مع الجيتار والدرامز الغربي.

وقررت "هايبرد ريكوردز" تصوير 3 أغنيات أخرى بطريقة الفيديو كليب تباعا أولها أغنية "السيرة الهلالية" أواخر شهر شباط/فبراير وبعدها أغنية "الليلة" وهي من التراث النوبي وتصور في نيسان/أبريل القادم ثم يتم تصوير فيديو كليب الأغنية الرئيسية للألبوم "زينوبه" في شهر أيار/مايو مع إطلاق الألبوم في الأسواق بالتزامن مع حفل للإعلان عن حدث عالمي سيتم تنظيمه عند سفح الأهرامات.

يذكر أن "هايبرد ريكوردز" شركة مصرية أسسها أحمد عزام ومحمد غراب ومقرها في القاهرة ولها فرع في مدينة سان فرانسيسكو الأمريكية وتضم موسيقيين ومنتجين من مصر وأوروبا والولايات المتحدة حصل بعضهم على العديد من الجوائز العالمية وأهمها الاسطوانة البلاتينية وجائزة غرامي.

وقال "كنت مرتبكاً ومتوتراً بعض الشيء، وفكرت انه سيشهر سلاحاً، وأتساءل إن كان الامر جدياً أو مجرد مزاح".

وقالت ماري ويت المحققة في شرطة بورتلاند ان ديكر (46 سنة) بقي بالفعل خارج المتجر بانتظار عناصر الشرطة الذين وصلوا خلال دقائق.

وأكدت ويت ان الرجل لم يكن يحمل سلاحاً ولم يقدم أساساً على سرقة أي شيء، ولذا لن توجه إليه أية تهمة بالسرقة. وذكرت المحطة ان الرجل أوقف واقتيد إلى السجن ولكن تهمته هي التقدم ببلاغ كاذب وليس السرقة.

أبوان يقتلان طفلتهما الرضيعة خنقاً

    تم اعتقال زوجين في جريمة قتل طفلتهما في مدينة "كراتشي" الواقعة في أقصى جنوب باكستان. وكشفت قناة "آج" الباكستانية الناطقة باللغة الأردية بأن زوجين باكستانيين قاما بخنق طفلتهما الرضيعة "فضيلة" ما أدى إلى مفارقتها للحياة. وبعد الحدث قام أحد أقرباء الطفلة بإبلاغ الشرطة عن شكوكه في موت الطفلة، بناء على أن الأبوين كانا يكرهان ولادة البنات لديهما. وبناءً على البلاغ الذي تلقته شرطة كراتشي قامت الشرطة باعتقالهما من منزلهما الواقع في ضاحية "كورنكي" بكراتشي ومن ثم تمت إحالتهما إلى المحكمة. وكشفت مصادر في الشرطة بأن الأبوين كانا يخططان لقتل ابنتهما الثانية "مريم" 4 سنوات إلا أن الشرطة وصلت في الوقت المناسب وأنقذتها.

الهند تنفرد بإصدار جريدة مكتوبة باليد

    تنفردت الهند بنشر جريدة يومية يتم تحريرها يدوياً في مدينة "جينائي" الهندية منذ 84 عاما. وأفادت مجموعة "جنك" الإخبارية الباكستانية الصادرة باللغة الأردية بأن نسخ الجريدة المخططة المسمى ب "مسلمان" والتي تصدر باللغة الأردية تضم فن الثقافة القديمة في عصر التكنولوجيا الراهن، وقد بدأ إصدارها في عام 1927 م، ويقوم بكتابتها ثلاثة متخصصين وخبراء في فن الخط الفارسي المتبع في تحرير اللغة الأردية، بحيث يتم الانتهاء من كتابة كل صفحة خلال ساعة كاملة، بينما تصدر 23 ألف نسخة يومياً محررة بالخط اليدوي، وتعتبر هذه الجريدة الوحيدة من نوعها في العالم وتباع ب 75 روبية هندية.

سائق أجرة يشجع الركاب على الغناء في سيارته

    في احدى ليالي يوم الجمعة وقبل فترة وجيزة من منتصف الليل قام سائق سيارة أجرة يدعى نظام الدين كيلينشيللي بنقل مجموعة من النساء اللاتي كن يغنين بصوت عال في الجزء الخلفي من سيارته.

وفي حين يرى بعض السائقين أن هذا هو أسوأ نوع سيارات الأجرة فإن كيلينشيللي يرحب بالنسوة بل يشجعهن على الغناء. وبينما يجلسن في المقعد الخلفي تقوم النسوة بترديد الأغاني الألمانية الشعبية الشهيرة ويزيدن من مظاهر الصخب وهن في طريقهن لمقصدهن.

وتختلف سيارة الاجرة الخاصة بكيلينشيللي بعض الشيء عن سيارات الأجرة الأخرى في مدينة مونستر شمال غرب ألمانيا حيث يقول الاتحاد الألماني لسيارات الأجرة وشركات تأجير السيارات إن سيارته هي الوحيدة في ألمانيا التي تؤدى فيها موسيقى الكاريوكي.

وقد تم تجهيز سيارة الأجرة تلك خصيصا بحيث يمكن للزبائن الغناء خلال توجههم لمقصدهم. وتوصل كيلينشيللي /46 عاما/ قبل عامين لفكرة وضع شاشة فيديو على سقف السيارة خلف مقعد السائق ويمكن للركاب طلب سماع أشرطة موسيقى مصورة بل يتم تشجيعهم لترديد كلمات الأغنية فور سماعها.

وقال كيلينشيللي"من المهم أن يكون هناك أشياء إضافية. ازداد الوضع سوءا لسائقي سيارات الأجرة. عدد أقل من الناس أصبحوا يستخدمون سيارات الأجرة".

وأوضح أن أجرة ركوب سيارات الأجرة تراجعت قيمتها في السنوات ال10 الماضية بمقدار الثلث، مؤكدا أن هذه الخدمة الإضافية مع ذلك لن تزيد من قيمة الأجرة.

براد وأنجلينا يتبرعان بمليون دولار لإغاثة هايتي

    تبرع النجمان براد بيت وأنجلينا جولي من خلال جمعيتهما الخيرية بمليون دولار لإغاثة ضحايا الزلزال الضخم الذي ضرب هايتي.

وذكر موقع "بيبول" الاميركي أن مؤسسة جولي وبيت ستقدم مبلغ مليون دولار إلى منظمة أطباء بلا حدود، التي تعرضت مستشفياتها الثلاثة في العاصمة بورت أو برنس إلى أضرار بالغة، ما دفع بالطاقم إلى العمل في العراء.

وقالت جولي "من الرهيب رؤية كارثة بهذا الحجم تصيب أشخاصاً يعانون من فقر شديد وعنف وعدم استقرار لعقود عدة".

وقال بيت "نفهم أن الاستجابة الأولى دقيقة لتلبية الحاجات الفورية لعدد كبير من الأشخاص الذين تشردوا من منازلهم، ويعانون من الصدمة ويحتاجون إلى عناية عاجلة".

من جهة أخرى، ذكرت وكالة الأنباء الأسترالية "أي أي بي" أن بطل رياضة سباق الدرجات الهوائية الأميركي لانس أرمسترونغ الذي يشارك حالياً في سباق في استراليا، تعهد بالتبرع بمبلغ 250 ألف دولار اميركي لإغاثة ضحايا الزلزال.

كما تدافع آخرون من نجوم هوليوود من الممثلين والموسيقين لتقديم المساعدة لضحايا الزلزال الذى ضرب هايتي يوم الاربعاء من خلال جمع الاموال وزيادة التوعية والتعهد بتقديم الدعم.

فقد حث مغني فريق فوجيس السابق ويسلف جين الذي ولد في هايتي المواطنين على التبرع بالاموال للمساعدة في جهود الاغاثة في موطنه الاصلي عن طريق إرسالها لمؤسسته الخيرية "ييلي" في هايتي.

كما حث نجم الهيب هوب شون "ديدي" كومبس معجبيه على التبرع بالاموال، حيث طلب على صفحته في موقع تويتر للتواصل الاجتماعي من معجبيه التبرع بالاموال لمؤسسة ييلي الخيرية.

تبرئة ديفيد كوبرفيلد من تهمة اغتصاب

    بُرئت صفحة الساحر الأميركي ديفيد كوبرفيلد بعد سنتين من التحقيق في قضية اغتصاب رفعتها ضده شابة أميركية.

وذكر موقع "تي إم زي" الأميركي انه بعد سنتين من التحقيق في القضية التي رفعتها متبارية سابقة في مسابقة ملكة جمال واشنطن، قرر المدعون الفدراليون في مدينة سياتل الأميركية إسقاطها من دون توجيه أية تهم إلى كوبرفيلد. وزعمت المرأة في شكواها انها كانت بين الحضور في عرض لكوبرفيلد عندما لمحها ودعاها إلى جزيرة خاصة في الباهاماس في العام 2007 حيث اعتدى عليها جنسياً.

وأكد محامو كوبرفيلد ان هدف المرأة من هذه القضية واضح وبسيط وهو الابتزاز للحصول على المال.

David Copperfield rape cased closed without charges

Prosecutors have closed a two year investigation into rape allegations against the magician David Copperfield without filing charges

 

The illusionist had always denied the allegations, which were made by a 23-year-old model and former beauty pageant contestant who has not been named.

His lawyers said the case was about "extortion for money, plain and simple."

 

The US Attorney's office in Seattle, Washington said it was ending its investigation but did not say why.

Last month the woman made separate allegations of sexual assault against another man. That matter was referred by police to prosecutors for potential charges against her of prostitution and making a false statement.

A civil claim by the woman against Copperfield is still pending.

Rebecca Roe, the woman's lawyer, said she was "disappointed" by the prosecutors' decision.

Copperfield, whose real name is David Kotkin, is famous for his illusions including making the Statue of Liberty disappear, and seemingly walking through the Great Wall of China.

خاطفون يوزعون اللحوم على الفقراء في الباراغواي

    سار خاطفو مرب ثري للماشية في الباراغواي على خطى "روبن هود" باجبارهم اقرباءه على ذبح ثلاثين عجلا وتوزيع مئات الكيلوغرامات من لحومها على سكان احياء فقيرة عدة، على ما افاد احد الصحافيين العاملين في وكالة فرانس برس.

وانتظم المئات من سكان حي تشاكاريتا القريب من القصر الرئاسي في اسونسيون في طوابير خلال فترة الصباح للحصول على كيس يحوي ثلاثة كيلوغرامات من اللحوم، في اطار عملية توزيع مجانية نظمت في ملعب رياضي صغير في العاصمة.

ونشر عناصر من الشرطة في المكان لتفادي اي تجاوزات في خطوة اثارت غضب المعارضة التي اتهمت الحكومة اليسارية والرئيس فرناندو لوغو ب "تمجيد عمليات الخطف والارهاب".

وتولى مربي المواشي دييغو زافالا، وهو شقيق فيديل زافالا الذي اختطف قبل 87 يوما، تأمين كميات اللحوم. واوضح انه بذلك لبى طلب "الجيش الشعبي في الباراغواي" وهي منظمة يسارية متطرفة. وتطالب المنظمة كذلك بفدية قدرها خمسة ملايين دولار (3,4 ملايين يورو) لتحرير شقيقه. وكان نحو عشرة رجال اختطفوا فيديل زافالا خلال عشاء عائلي في دارته الكبيرة في مدينة مابيل في مقاطعة كونثبثيون، على بعد خمسمئة كيلومتر شمال اسونسيون، وحيث جرت عمليات توزيع اخرى للحوم الثلاثاء. وكان جرح شرطيان خلال عملية الخطف.

Reaching the top of 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro proved to be an emotional experience for Jessica Biel and Emile Hirsch, who climbed
 Africa's tallest peak to raise awareness of the global water crisis.

"I
 walked over to Jessie and gave her a big hug," UN Foundation executive
 Elizabeth Gore, who also made the hike, tells PEOPLE via satellite phone. "The two of us embraced and
 we just cried. Every single one of us was in absolute tears."

"The temperature was zero degrees and so many people were struggling," she adds. "People had hurt limbs, people had altitude sickness."

After six days of climbing, the final stretch of the mountain Tuesday proved to be
 the most arduous. "We had a complete whiteout," says Gore. "There was so much
 snow, we could only see two or three feet in front of us. So we had to line
 up like a chain to make it to the final point. I'm so proud that every single one of us 12 climbers made it."

Once the group of climbers – which included Ethiopian-born Kenna and 
environmentalist Kick Kennedy, granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy – reached
 the summit, they quickly had to begin their descent.

The
 way down is so steep," says Gore. "And we had ice, so you're stepping
 sideways, trying not to slip. And we hit big boulders, so we had to
 hop-skip. We had major knee issues."

After eight days of hiking, the group finally reached the town of Arusha,
 Tanzania at the base of the mountain on late Wednesday. They planned to
 celebrate with a hot meal at a local restaurant and to toss back a few 
bottles of the local Tanzanian beer.

On Thursday, Jessica Biel, Kenna and rapper Santigold will join Gore on a
 trip to a United Nations camp in Ethiopia to see some of the 
world's most significant water problems. "We are all so tired, dirty and 
bruised," says Gore, "but we re trying to give a voice to people who don't
 have any."

Kenna, born Kenna Zemedkun, is an Ethiopian-born American musician. The eldest son of an immigrant family that relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio (and later raised in Virginia Beach, VA), Kenna began to express an interest in music upon receiving a copy of U2's The Joshua Tree. The way he was discovered and the obstacles he faced to land a record deal are briefly discussed in Malcolm Gladwell's 2005 book Blink.

With the release of his first single, "Hell Bent", Kenna gained moderate popularity and an underground following of fans who eagerly awaited the release of his debut album, New Sacred Cow. After many delays and swapping of record labels, the album was finally released under the Sony imprint Flawless in 2003.[1] A subsequent North American tour was launched in the Summer of 2003 with Depeche Mode front man Dave Gahan.

The album, which was co-produced by Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, contained elements of electronica, synth pop, post rock, and house music. Two singles, "Sunday After You" and "Freetime" followed the release of the album; the music video of the latter, along with "Hell Bent", appeared sporadically on MTV2.

The story of Kenna's big-name supporters, test marketing, and ultimate lack of record sales is covered by a whole chapter in Malcolm Gladwell's book, Blink, titled "Kenna's Dilemma: The Right - and Wrong - Way to Ask People What They Want"

Kenna's second album, entitled Make Sure They See My Face, also co-produced by Hugo, has faced delays, written over the course of three years, finishing in early 2007.[2] The album was originally set to be released on June 5, 2007, then pushed back to June 19, 2007, finally being released on October 16, 2007. Kenna, in an interview with Vibe magazine, cited the reason for delays as being over the video for the album's debut single. The inspiration for the album came from Kenna's attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the title, inspired from phone calls by Pharrell asking Kenna; "are you going to make sure they see your face?". Kenna's climb took him to 18,200 feet before he fell ill from taking a sulfur-based altitude medicine, one he was unaware he was allergic to.[3] On October 23, 2007, the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 20 Heatseekers Chart.

An unrelated song from his second album, "Face the Gun", was released to appease his waiting fans, and initially was not to appear on Make Sure They See My Face, missing from early promos of the album. Ultimately, it was included in the final track listing. Kenna released a track from the album, entitled "Better Wise Up", in time for the Super Bowl; this track can be found on his MySpace page, as well. A remix of "Better Wise Up" featuring Audio Imagery has been circulating the internet since August 2007. There has been no official word from Kenna or from his label about this remix.

It has been said that Ethiopian-born, singer/songwriter Wayna possesses a voice that is as sweet and pure as it is honest and passionate. This young talent's love for music started as a child, when she starred in theater productions like "Annie," and "Damn Yankees" and toured with a children's musical review company. Wayna went on to hone her vocal talents as a young adult by absorbing the works of her favorite artists, including Minnie Riperton, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway.

While in college, Wayna was crowned Miss Black Unity of the University of Maryland in 1995, earning a one year tuision scholarship and special honors for "Best Talent" and "Best Response to Question" at the 17th annual pageant. Ethiopia - Two Ethiopian-Americans nominated for 2009 Grammy Nominees

Two Ethiopian-American singers, Kenna Zemedkun and Wayna Wondwossen, have been nominated for the 2009 Grammy awards, according to a press release by The Recording Academy. Kenna Zemedkun's 'Say Goodbye To Love' and Lovin You by Wayna are nominated in the same group, the Best Urban/Alternative Performance group.
