It's uncanny ... James McAvoy and a garden gnome. Photographs: Frazer Harrison/Getty and Roger Tooth/Guardian He reinvented himself as a buffed up action hero in Wanted. But James McAvoy clearly isn't scared to return to the sort of territory he inhabited in a much earlier big screen role: Narnia's Mr Tumnus the Faun. The Scottish actor is in talks to play a gnome in the Shakespeare spoof Gnomeo and Juliet, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sadly for those of us for whom that inspires amusing images of McAvoy in comical prosthetics and brightly-coloured hat, the film will be an all-CGI production, in which the former star of Shameless may play opposite Emily Blunt, in negotiations to co-star as Juliet. We might get to hear McAvoy sing, however. The movie looks set to be a vehicle for the songs of Elton John, whose Rocket Pictures has signed a deal with Miramax to collaborate on the project. Cue, presumably, various reworked versions of John/Bernie Taupin classics: Saturday Night's Alright For Fishing, perhaps, or the up-tempo duet Don't Go Breaking My Hat. The film may, perhaps predictably, see McAvoy and Blunt playing lovers from rival gardens. The part of Juliet was originally set to be filled by Kate Winslet, but the Oscar-winning actor had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts. John's partner on the soundtrack for The Lion King, Tim Rice, was originally set to write original songs for Gnomeo, but that plan has been shelved in favour of using John's extensive back catalogue, backed up with a few new songs. Shrek 2 co-director Kelly Asbury will take charge of the production, which should hit cinemas some time in 2010. |

She is notoriously reluctant to be interviewed, but Kate Moss has finally broken her silence - to launch a stinging attack on men.
Her scathing remarks on the opposite sex accompany one of the Croydon-born beauty's sexiest photoshoots ever.
The supermodel poses in a series of striking black and white photos, including one risqué shot which features Moss wearing nothing expect a pair of elbow-high gloves, for U.S. magazine Interview.
Laid back: Kate Moss strikes a relaxed pose in a high-leg leotard and bizarre metal belt for the Interview magazine shoot
In one shot, a laid back Moss leans against the wall in a high-legged leotard, with her tiny waist 'crowned' by a unusual-looking belt made of metal wires.
For the feature, the 34-year-old covers up her long blonde hair with a short platinum blonde wig, harking back to the 1980s haircut of Blondie star Deborah Harry.

The supermodel, who is dating Kills frontman boyfriend Jamie Hince, reveals in the interview that she doesn't think terribly highly of the opposite sex.
'Absolute b******s. Men are not to be trusted,' she said.
She also boasts of her sexual abilities, admitting she has more experience with men in her thirties: 'I'm a lot better in the sack now.'
Kate Moss, pictured with boyfriend Jamie Hince leaving pop star George Michael's home, has revealed she thinks men can't be trusted
She also reveals her daughter, Lila, is a fashion freak and much-more strong willed than she was as a child.
The model also chose the interview as an excuse to pour water on rumours that she doesn't eat and is too skinny.
She said: 'I didn't eat for a long time. Not on purpose. You'd be on shoots with bad food or get on a plane and the food would be so disgusting you wouldn't eat it.'
The supermodel tries to avoid the media glare by covering up with a jacket
'I never liked being that skinny. I was never anorexic, so I was never that skinny.'
Her comments, which also appear in this week's Grazia magazine, come as she was snapped enjoying a romantic night out with Hince.
Moss was pictured leaving pop star George Michael's house following the final leg of his two-year worldwide tour to mark the end of his live career.
The supermodel thoroughly enjoyed herself during Michael's final concert
As well as Moss and Hince, other guests in attendance were Matt Lucas and a mystery male companion.
And despite giving the rare interview, Moss proved she is still keen to avoid the paparazzi glare as she tried to shield herself from cameras by covering herself with a jacket.
Moss was styled by Karl Templer for the Interview shoot. The magazine is currently on sale in U.S. newsstands.

Jennifer Aniston appears to be bouncing back after she was dumped by singer John Mayer earlier this month.
The former Friends star was all smiles yesterday as she cruised through Beverly Hills, dressed casually in a vest, cap and oversized shades.
Her latest failed relationship came to an end two weeks ago after just four months, with Mayer saying he called off their romance to 'be alone'.
All smiles: Hollywood bachelorette Jennifer Aniston in Beverly Hills yesterday
Mayer, who decided against keeping a dignified silence over the split, added that infidelity did not play a part.
He told reporters at the time: 'There's no lying, there's no cheating, there's no nothing.
'People are different, people have different chemistry. I ended a relationship to be alone, because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right.'
Team Aniston sources have played down the split, insisting Jennifer only ever saw their romance as a fling.
An insider says: 'She didn’t see herself and John having much in common or having a future together.
'She wasn’t fazed by the ending of it. She wasn’t hurt at all. She feels fine.'

And so must her feet for that matter.
The heiress rarely goes out without donning a pair of killer stillettos - even for a trip to the supermarket it seems.

Gladiator star Russell Crowe once reigned over Hollywood as its most popular leading man.
But as he stepped out in his hometown of Sydney yesterday, it was astonishingly clear his heartthrob status is now just a distant memory.
The Oscar-winning actor was almost unrecognisable as he took a walk near his seaside home, his scruffy appearance, hefty paunch and ghastly tracksuit a world away from his turn as Maximus Decimus Meridius in the 2000 hit.
Heartthrob no more: Russell Crowe in his hometown of Sydney yesterday
His grooming regime and once vigorous exercise programme has clearly taken a slide in recent times, and his regard for fashion has apparently dipped to an all-time low.
But while his transformation may have meant some Hollywood offers have dried up, he still has a string of projects in the pipeline.
This year he stepped into the lead role of State Of Play, based on the BBC mini series by the same name, after Brad Pitt pulled out the film.
Remember when: Russell in the 2000 hit Gladiator
He is also rumoured to be attached to a new biopic of late comedy legend Bill Hicks, who fell victim to cancer at the age of 32 after years of battling with drink and drugs.
Hicks shot to fame in the 80s and early 90s for his acerbic wit and is considered a highly influential figure.
Writer Mark Staufer has already written a treatment for a possible film, and is now turning that into a draft script, reports Empire.

TV's celebrity factor under spotlight
Has television's celebrity boom had its day? Are viewers - and, more importantly, TV bosses - fed up with the endless parade of C-, D- and E-list names baring their souls in so-called reality shows? Not according to those in the know at the Edinburgh International Television Festival. Viewers have watched Jodie Marsh find a husband on screen and Kerry Katona give birth. They've seen Jade Goody abuse Shilpa Shetty and be told by Big Brother she has cancer (though not in the British version). They've eavesdropped as the mother of all "reality" stars, Sharon Osbourne, invited TV cameras into a rock-star family home - letting them stay for three years - before reinventing herself as an X Factor judge. Yet still they want more, we were told at a festival session called I'm a Celebrity - Get Me on TV!. 'Get me celebrities' The panellists included Osbourne herself, the publicist Max Clifford and the former editor of the celebrity magazine Heat, Mark Frith. "The world of celebrity has got bigger," said Frith. "It's the same in advertising," added Osbourne. "They want a celebrity to advertise their product because it works."
The executive producer of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! went further. "I haven't been into any meeting with any commissioner at any channel where they haven't said, 'Get me a celebrity on this show,'" said Natalka Znak, controller of factual entertainment at ITV Productions. "It doesn't matter what subject it is, or how serious the documentary, they say, 'I want a celebrity presenting it,'" she said. "That's all people care about. There's so much competition for viewers, a celebrity might just make you watch something you would not ordinarily watch." The irony was not lost on the audience. Holocaust joke For the festival organisers have succumbed to the same obsession, luring ever more celebrities to Edinburgh in recent years, to boost media attention. This year they even appointed the celebrity PR firm Taylor Herring to maximise coverage. The festival opened with the current king of TV fashion, Gok Wan, hosting a live edition of How to Look Good Naked, featuring hapless TV executives in various stages of dress and undress.
Next up was Jamie Oliver, giving the Richard Dunn Memorial Interview, where he managed to offend Germans in the audience - and others - by making a veiled joke about the Holocaust. The interview was punctuated by a cookery lesson in which the one-time "Naked Chef" coached a "volunteer" from the audience. Surprise, surprise, it turned out to be Sharon Osbourne - who then took the stage in her own right, indulging in a spiky spat with Max Clifford in the celebrity session. The dynamic duo kept the celeb-conscious journalists happy with some well-timed exclusives - Osbourne revealing that she'd love to appear on the next series of Strictly Come Dancing; Clifford that he'd signed up cycling's triple-gold-medallist Chris Hoy and was seeking more Olympic clients. Star line-up More celebs and TV spin-off shows are to come, as the festival unfolds over the weekend. Richard and Judy are in conversation, fresh from their final show on Channel 4. Evan Davis hosts three special editions of Dragon's Den, while Armando Iannucci gives the Alternative MacTaggart Lecture. John Humphrys will present a Mastermind Edinburgh Special; there's an 8 Out of 10 Cats Edinburgh Special with Jimmy Carr; and Angus Deayton is hosting a Before They Were Famous Edinburgh Special. Anything, it seems, to enliven what might otherwise seem a succession of boring television executives. As ITV's director of television, Peter Fincham, put it, in his keynote MacTaggart Lecture on Friday night - "whisper it quietly - we're in showbusiness".
