The secret to getting toddlers to eat – picture books
Source: The Telegraph >> Read Full Article
Parents struggling to persuade fussy toddlers to try new foods should show them photographs of it first, a study has found.
Psychologists at Reading University found that one year-olds who regularly look at pictures of vegetables and fruit not part of their normal diet are much more enthusiastic about tasting them.
Parents were given picture books about four foods – two fruits and two vegetables.
Two of them were already familiar to the child, such as carrots and grapes while two others such as radish and lychees were not.
They then read the book with the child every day for the next two weeks.
At the end of the fortnight they were offered four vegetables – two from the book and two not from the book – and a similar plate of fruit.
The children showed more interest in tasting unfamiliar foods if they had previously seen pictures of them in books. So, for example, children who had seen lychees in their books tasted these before trying a fruit not shown, such as blueberries. Toddlers who had seen blueberries chose these before lychees

Fears for children who eat too much fruit and veg

In today's health-obsessed society, parents are made to feel guilty if they do not feed their children a diet packed with fibre-rich fruit and vegetables.
But it seems that toddlers, at least, can have too much of a good thing.
Dieticians are warning that too much fibre and too little fat can lead to vitamin deficiencies and stunt growth in the under-fives.
Experts say this age group has different dietary requirements to school-age children and their developing bodies cannot cope with high quantities of fruit and vegetables.
The advice follows a trading standards study of nursery menus which found the majority were serving portions that were too small.
Healthy eating: Nutritionists warn too little fat in children's diets can lead to growth deficiencies in children
Only 30 per cent were providing meals with enough calories.
Sarah Almond, a paediatric dietician who has analysed the results of the study, said: "We expected the study to show nurseries were serving children food that was too high in calories, fat, saturated fat and salt, and low in vegetables and fruit.
"Instead, we found the majority of nurseries had gone to the other extreme and appeared to be providing food that was too low in calories, fat and saturated fat and too high in fruit and vegetables."
Youngsters were being put at risk of developing nutritional deficiencies as a result, she said.
Mrs Almond, a guest lecturer on child health at Brighton University, said toddlers' bodies needed energy-rich foods, gleaned from a number of small meals and snacks spread through the day.
In addition, too many fibre-rich fruit and vegetables can inhibit the body's ability to absorb other nutrients, including key minerals such as iron, which is essential for growth, as well as for the health of blood and the immune system.

Fibre also fills children up quickly, stopping them from eating the calories they need to grow.
"Because a significant number of children attend nurseries from 7am to 7pm, the food and nutrition they receive there are key to their health," Mrs Almond told the Observer newspaper.
"Nurseries are applying requirements of healthy eating for schoolage children and adults to the one-to-four age group, who have entirely different requirements."
In contrast to school meals, Government regulations do not cover the provision of toddlers' food.
Experts say the lack of legislation means the trading standards study of meals at ten nurseries in East Sussex is likely to be an accurate snapshot of what is happening nationwide.
Neil Leitch, of educational charity the Pre-School Learning Alliance, said nurseries were "over-focusing on the message about eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day".
"The nutritional content of toddlers' meals is a proper science and nurseries are simply not aware of the vital calories, fats, carbohydrate, sugars, protein, vitamins and minerals."
A separate study shows mothers are buying more fruit and veg and less chips and chocolate for their children.
Family shopping baskets contained around 10 per cent more healthy food at the end of the year-long study than at the start, and almost 5 per cent less of treats high in sugar and fat.
Food firm Crosse & Blackwell monitored the shopping baskets of 500 families with children under 16.

Fruit and vegetables 'improve complexion more than tan'
Faces are more attractive when they have a “golden glow”, but the effect is better achieved by eating fruit and vegetables than by getting a tan, according to researchers.

Rosy cheeks and light yellowish skin was judged to be the healthiest looking in a series of experiments.
However, a darker, more tanned look appealed less.

The team behind the study said that the only way to achieve the most favoured look was to eat a diet high in fruit and vegetables.
"This discovery is very exciting and has given us a promising lead into cues to health," said Prof David Perrett, from the perception laboratory at St Andrews University.
"The only natural way in which we can make our skin lighter and more yellow is to eat a more healthy diet high in fruit and vegetables."
"What we eat and not just how much we eat appears to be important for a healthy appearance,” he added.
Dr Ian Stephen, from Bristol University, one of the co-authors of the study, recommended eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to improve the complexion.
“It is really the same message about health eating, but just for different reasons, for your skin tone, instead of for other health benefits,” he said.
Rosy skin tones slightly flushed with blood and full of oxygen make people look more healthy because they suggest a strong heart and lungs, the researchers believe.
Smokers along with people with heart disease or diabetes tend to have less rosy skin, making it appear less healthy.
The researchers believe that we prefer light golden or 'yellow-toned' skin because of the signal it sends about the amount of pigments from the fruit and vegetables in our diet.
These pigments are powerful antioxidants which help the body to fight disease and so can be strong signs of health in their own right.
The study used computer software which was able to manipulate the appearance of skin tone in a series of 51 images, 30 male and 21 female faces.

Researchers asked 54 people to adjust the skin colour of the faces to make them look as healthy as possible.
They found that the volunteers used the programme to increase the lightness and rosiness of the skin as well as the yellow tone.

The team said that while fruit and vegetables can make skin lighter and more yellow, a tan made the tone darker and more yellow.
The findings, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Unilever Research, are published in the International Journal of Primatology.
