"It's so cute." That's what my wife, Maryam, said when I first brought home a netbook. What caught her eye? She could carry one in her purse without having to lug around an additional computer bag.

Lots of other people are finding netbooks cute too. Acer alone sold 5 million netbooks last year and expects to sell 10 million to 12 million in 2009. These $300 to $500 small computers -- somewhere between a full notebook and a smartphone in size -- have become popular because they're delivering value and portability with as much power as top-of-the-line laptops from just a few years ago.

Jumping into this market right now as a consumer, though, is like wading into a raging river. Companies are upgrading what constitutes a top-of-the-line netbook every three to four months, which makes it hard to avoid some buyer's remorse. I got a Samsung NC10 last fall, and I love it, but when I saw a pre-release version of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE ($400) in February, I thought, That's my next netbook.

You really need to get your hands on a netbook before buying one. Why? First, the screens can be small and unsatisfying, particularly on the cheaper units. The value-minded Acer Aspire One now has a 10.1-inch display, which should be your minimum. If you want more than four hours of battery life, you'll need to make sure you get what's known as a six-cell battery. The cheapest (and smallest) units have three-cell batteries and will last only about two hours. Note the storage capacity, too. Some netbooks rely on a solid-state drive (SSD), which does make them lighter (between half a pound and 1 pound), quieter, and less prone to break. But if you plan to use your netbook for more than email and Web surfing -- say, for crunching spreadsheets -- you may regret being limited to a puny 8 or 16 GB versus 160 GB.

Perhaps most important, you need to test-drive the keyboard. Netbook keyboards are smaller than a regular notebook's, so make sure you're comfortable with the layout, spacing, and squishiness of the keys.

1. Best for road warriors

Samsung NC10 ($469). Solid battery life (about seven hours), a good keyboard, clear and bright screen, great performance, and, yes, it's available in other colors.

HP Mini 2140 ($449). Thanks to its integrated graphics chip, the 2140 handles video better than most in its class. If you work for a large enterprise, you may have a support contract with HP, which offers some peace of mind if you have trouble with the machine.

3. Best for deal hunters

Acer Aspire One ($350). Acer continues to redefine what a lower-priced netbook can be. The latest Aspire One, released in February, has a 160-GB hard drive, a fast processor, Windows XP Home (rather than Linux, which can't run Office), and a 10.1-inch screen.

 Li-Ion cells are permanently damaged when their charge drops below certain levels. If the voltage gets too low, the battery will stop working and become unsafe to use. Therefore all systems powered by Li-Ion batteries have a predefined threshold set to shut down at certain levels of discharge. As a result, Li-Ion batteries are made to the exact specifications of the systems they are designed for, and vice-versa. This is where batteries from another system or low-cost generic batteries may not be compatible. If the thresholds of the system and battery do not match, there is a risk of power cutting off at the wrong moment. This may lead to unsaved work being lost, data corruption, or irreversible battery damage.

In addition, generic low-cost batteries are not made with the high safety standards of official batteries. Main-brand batteries use only approved safety circuits in their battery packs whereas there is no regulation of off-brand battery production. This, as well as attempts by notebook manufacturers to ensure approved batteries are used, is responsible for the higher cost of official batteries. There have been reports of notebooks rejecting generic batteries (to avoid usage of potentially dangerous batteries) without software changes (bypassing the security system). Some generic batteries even fail to work altogether.

There are subtle differences in design, manufacture, and the operation of generic and official batteries which may or may not cause problems for you. Heat is the main factor in accelerating the ageing process of laptop

batteries.
So its best to charge the battery when its cold and the laptop is off.
Its also best to discharge the battery by using the laptop and not

simultaneously charge it; as this will generate excessive heat in the battery.
When you laptop is working very hard (video editing for example) and the

internal cooling fan starts cranking up then consider taking a break from you

laptop because the the battery will also start heating up.
I'm a fan of charging my laptop to 100% switched off or asleep and then using

the laptop right down to about 5% before fully recharging. However this is

more for the benefit of the metering circuitry than the life of the battery.
Just for the record. My Black 2.2GHz Macbook is 18 months old. The battery has

been power cycled 445 times and holds 4937 mAh or 98.3% of original rated

capacity. A full charge gives me 4-5 hours use.
I am however dreading buying a replacement battery due to the crazy cost.

How to save money when replacing your laptop battery

Is your Laptop battery totally dead? Well do not throw it in the bin just yet. You have several options that will get you back on track and using your Notebook or Laptop. You could be paying a cost of £40 which is typical for the cost of a replacement battery.

I will give you instructions that could see you saving from 30% up to 90% on the cost of replacing your battery. A word of warning, I would not do this unless the battery is completely useless and it is on the way to recycling.

Ok the cheaper alternative is to replace the batteries inside the battery pack. So you need to remove the battery pack from your laptop. Proceed to open the pack carefully, using a screwdriver should be fine. Inside you will find a number of batteries.

If any of these are leaking then you may consider stopping this process. If you do continue I must stress that you be very careful.

Ok you now need to identify the replacement Batteries (Cells) and note exactly how they are connected to each other. You should verify that the batteries are dead by testing them with a multimeter or other device.

Once you have identified that they are dead you need to order replacements, they should have a slightly higher milliamp value than the old ones. After receiving you replacements do any required soldering, using safety equipment and make sure all connections are in tact. At this point you should test the new batteries to make sure they work properly.

Put the case of the battery pack back together and seal it. Place the unit back into the Laptop and start enjoying your laptop.
