CORRECTED-UPDATE 3-GM claims unprecedented mileage from Volt
26 August, 2009
DETROIT, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The Chevrolet Volt, the electric car General Motors Co [GM.UL] is counting on to revitalize its lineup, is on track to achieve an unprecedented fuel economy rating of 230 miles per gallon in city driving, GM said on Tuesday. GM's Chief Executive Fritz Henderson said the Volt would get a "triple-digit" fuel economy rating for combined highway and city driving based on a draft standard developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He did not provide the combined highway and city figure. Toyota Motor Corp's (7203.T) Prius hybrid, ugg mini which accounted for over 60 percent of U.S. hybrid sales from January through July 2009, has a combined fuel economy rating of 50 miles per gallon. "The Volt is becoming very real, very fast," Henderson said in an announcement at GM's technical center that was Webcast to the public. The Volt, expected late next year, is designed to run for 40 miles from a single charge of a lithium-ion battery pack. When the battery is partly depleted, a small combustion engine kicks in to recharge the battery and power the vehicle. Industry tracking firm Edmunds.com said thatugg nightfall while the Volt might fall short of mileage expectations, it would still be the most fuel-efficient mass-market vehicle and would help GM to break its association with gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. "For most people, it is not realistic to expect that kind of mileage in real world driving," said Michelle Krebs, an analyst at Edmunds.com. But, he added, "The Volt should easily get more than 50 miles to the gallon, and that will make it an industry leader." In drafting standards to calculate theugg short published mileage rating for the Volt and other upcoming electric vehicles, U.S. regulators have made assumptions about how much a typical driver would rely on the traditional gas engine. Those standards are due to be published later this year. Henderson said GM has engineers working on second- and third-generation versions of the Volt to cut production costs. GM has been racing to make Volt the ugg sunburst tallfirst mass-market plug-in hybrid in the United States and generate buzz for its lineup that will take aim at competitors led by Toyota Motor Corp. The Volt is designed to be recharged at a standard electric outlet. Henderson said that would reduce the cost of the first 40 miles of driving for some Americans to about 40 cents, the cost of recharging the car overnight in a garage.

In a Tight Spot, Pelosi Calls Health Care Critics 'Un-American'
17 August, 2009
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned the health care debate up a notch Monday, penning a column along with her top deputy that questioned the patriotism of those disrupting ed hardy lingerietown hall meetings to air their complaints. Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer claimed such behavior is "simply un-American." It's hardly the first time Pelosi, who earlier this year accused the CIA of lying to Congress and repeatedly has called Republicans unpatriotic, has employed some serious ed hardy woman socksname-calling to characterize her opponents' views. The jab Monday drew swift scorn from Republicans and critics who say the health care demonstrations are as American as apple pie. "I, like most Americans, would find that kind of characterization of citizens exercising their First Amendment rights to be offensive," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., told FOX News. "There's nothing more American than letting your elected representatives know how you feel about important issues facing the nation." House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, released a statement calling the charge "outrageous and reprehensible." Pelosi and Hoyer made the accusation as part of a ed hardy beltslengthy column in USA Today stressing the need for action on health care reform. The piece was published as lawmakers return to their districts for summer recess, a period that could imperil the legislation if health care critics cause moderate Democrats to lose their stomachs for sweeping reform. Critics have confronted lawmakers about the bills, ed hardy woman sunglassessometimes shouting at them, at a number of town halls in the past week alone. On Monday, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill tried a new tack in rebutting the protesters while also minimizing their complaints. She got several hands when she asked audience members at a town hall meeting to raise their hands if they're so scared about the federal government running health care that they "can't think straight." For Pelosi and Hoyer, they charged that an "ugly campaign" is afoot to misrepresent the legislation, "disrupt" the public meetings and prevent members of Congress from "conducting a civil dialogue" on the topic. "Let the facts be heard," they wrote. "These ed hardy sunglassesdisruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views -- but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades." The "un-American" dig was a sign the debate is heating up. In a tight spot, Pelosi is known for employing tough rhetoric and accusations to muscle her way out. Back in September 2008, Pelosi used similar language to complain about Republicans who weren't showing up to talks on a Wall Street bailout package. "I thought it was very unpatriotic of them not to show up, not to show up, in some ways, boycott the meetings earlier in the week," she said. She also reportedly called the GOP budget ed hardy woman wachesin 2006 "unpatriotic" because it drove up the national debt. This past May, she accused the CIA of lying to Congress, as she was facing questions about how much she knew early on about the Bush administration's interrogation policies. Then last week, with the health care debate growing more heated, she invoked Nazi Germany, accusing protesters of "carrying swastikas and symbols like that" to meetings. A spokesman for Pelosi later said the speaker was referencing a photo taken at a town hall meeting hosted by Rep. Ed Markey, ugg boots D-Mass., which showed a protester holding a sign of a swastika crossed out over President Obama's name and a question mark. Yet the language Pelosi is using for health care critics is nothing like the language she used to describe anti-war protesters criticized by war supporters as unpatriotic. Pelosi, who led efforts to withdraw from Iraq before troops had finished the job, tolerated anti-war hecklers on several occasions. "It's always exciting," she said of protesters who interrupted a meeting in January 2006, according to an account in the San Francisco Chronicle. "This is democracy in action.ed hardy woman wallets I'm energized by it, frankly." At an event in June 2007, she told anti-war protesters "just go for it, I respect your enthusiasm," according to another account. The claims of "un-American" behavior by critics is not something made by President Obama, who on Monday withheld criticism of his health care detractors. "We are having a vigorous debate in the United States and I think that's a healthy thing," he said, speaking at a North American summit in Mexico. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said there's not ed hardyreally any "substantive difference" between the anti-war protests of MoveOn and Code Pink then and the health care reform criticism today -- other than the subject being addressed. Cornyn told FOX News he thinks the latest charge of being "un-American" is a "pretty harsh statement" about Americans who have serious concerns about the health care legislation.

Bill Clinton has quite a story to tell
10 August, 2009
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After his talks with reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, Bill Clinton sure has a story to tell. And one of the first in line to hear his tale is President Barack Obama. "I suspect that President Clinton will have someed hardy bags purses interesting observations from his trip and I will let him provide those to me," Obama told MSNBC on Wednesday. The former president was chosen by the North Koreans from among four possible envoys proposed to them to try to gain freedom for two American reporters sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in North Korea. Other candidates for the task were other prominent Democrats: New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and the man who served as Clinton's vice president, Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore. Thus, Clinton became the most senior American ed hardy women's one piece swim suitenvoy to spend time face-to-face with Kim in nearly a decade. Kim is ailing and is widely believed to have suffered a stroke in August 2008. There have been rumors about pancreatic cancer and uncertainty about who will succeed him. North Korea-watchers in and out of the U.S. government are wanting to know how he looked, how he seemed and what he talked about. Some analysts have speculated Clinton's visit could opened hardy women belts the way to direct talks with the communist state over its nuclear weapons program. "I think it'll be very interesting," said Republican Senator John McCain. "He's the first Westerner to see Kim since his reported stroke and other problems. I think former President Clinton will have some interesting information." In the secret negotiations that led to the rescue mission, Clinton made clear to Obama administration officials he only wanted to go if he had some certainty that Americans Laura Ling, 32, and Euna Lee, 36, would be released to his custody. "We considered the request carefully," saided hardy underwear a senior administration official. "We tested directly with the North Koreans repeatedly. We sought and received North Korea's agreement in fact that a visit by President Clinton would secure the release of Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee." 'INCREDIBLE' Clinton had a meeting with Kim for an hour and 15 minutes and a dinner with him that lasted about two hours. In Clinton's entourage were his former White House chief of staff, John Podesta, and Clinton's personal physician, Roger Band. Asia expert Nick Szechenyi of the Center for ed hardy woman capsStrategic and International Studies said the up-close look at Kim was probably one of the most fascinating aspects of Clinton's visit.

Google Gets Into The Advertising Trash Talk Game
07 August, 2009
Microsoft has spent much of the past year taking shots at competitors through advertisements, and company executives have been crowing about the positive impact this is having on Microsoft's brand perception. Perhaps that's why Google is now getting into the act with some Microsoft-focused advertising of its own. Google on Monday launched a billboarded hardy advertising campaign that will highlight the frustrations associated with using Microsoft Office. Over the next four weeks, billboards in Boston, Chicago, New York and San Francisco will illustrate how an anonymous IT managers' struggles with Office leads him to recommend that his company switch to Google Apps, according to The Wall Street Journal. Sometime in the second half of 2010, Microsoft will offer Office Web Applications, lightweight versions that run in a Web browser and will be available in advertising-supported or subscription versions. Microsoft hasn't revealed pricing for the subscription versions yet. Google Apps Premier edition is $50 per user per year, but the Standard edition costs just $10 per year for a domain name. That's a pretty low bar to match for Microsoft, which has spent years milking the Office cash cow. This type of advertising isn't exactly buy ed hardyGoogle's bailiwick, but the Big Dog in search probably feels a need to respond in some fashion to Microsoft, whose recent slew of Bing advertisements suggest that the poor signal-to-noise ratio of today's search engines is frustrating to users. Microsoft is also trying to create the impression that Google's keyword-based search business model is to blame. Google's billboards will also focus on the high cost of software upgrades as one of the advantages of using Google Apps. That's a delicious stroke of irony given Microsoft's recent efforts to do the same to Apple through its Laptop Hunters campaign. Microsoft has scored points by playing up the higher price tag of Macs, and last month Apple's lawyers asked Microsoft to change one of the ads to reflect recent price cuts. Microsoft's advertising campaign has beened hardy belts expensive, but executives are clearly pleased with the results. And the Apple-focused campaign has been cheered both by shareholders and partners who've admitted to feeling a certain queasy feeling every time they saw one of Apple's brilliant "Get A Mac" spots. Google may have watched the dynamics between Apple and Microsoft play out and decided to get ugg bootssome skin in the game. And, by using billboards as the medium, the search giant may be looking to get a bigger bang using fewer bucks.

Episcopal Church Picks Gay Priests for Promotion
04 August, 2009
Only weeks after the Episcopal Church ended a de facto moratorium on promoting gay men and lesbians into the church hierarchy, church leaders in Los Angeles nominated two openly gay priests as assistant bishops on Sunday. Times Topics: Episcopal ChurchThe move cameed hardy twist specialty tank a day after a church search committee in Minnesota announced that it had settled on three candidates, one of them a lesbian, for bishop. The decisions are certain to rekindle the hostilities between the liberal and conservatives factions within the Episcopal Church in the United States and between the ed hardy jeanschurch and the Anglican Communion, the generally conservative global network of churches to which the Episcopal Church belongs. The moratorium on ordaining gays and lesbians into the church hierarchy was adopted three years ago and helped calm conservatives in the Anglican Communion, which was nearly torn apart by the election in 2003 of the church’s first and only openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. But church members voted overwhelmingly on July 14 at a general convention in Anaheim, Calif.,ed hardy denim to reopen the door to bishops who are openly gay. The Diocese of Los Angeles, one of the largest and most liberal in the country, announced Sunday the nomination of six priests as candidates for two assistant bishop jobs. The list included two openly gay clerics, the Rev. Canon Mary D. Glasspool, 55, who is currently canon to the bishops in the Diocese of Maryland, based in Baltimore, and the Rev. John L. Kirkley, 42, who is rector of St. John the Evangelist Church in San Jose, Calif., part of the Diocese of California. “I affirm each and every one of these candidates, ed hardy women jeansand I am pleased with the wide diversity they offer this diocese,” the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, said in a statement. The two new assistant bishops are to be chosen in December during the annual convention of the diocese. The nominations of Ms. Glasspool and Mr. Kirkley came after the search committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota announced the names of three candidates for bishop, includinged hardy hoodies outerwear the Rev. Bonnie Perry, rector of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Chicago. Ms. Perry, who has served as vicar and rector of All Saints.for nearly 17 years, has for the last 22 years been in a relationship with the Rev. Susan Harlow, who is also an Episcopal priest. “As we continue to discern God’s call,” Ms. Perryed hardy sweaters said in a statement on Sunday, “I pray that we will bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ that changes people’s lives and proclaims the profound inclusivity and hospitality of God.”’ Ms. Perry, 47, was ordained in 1990 and spent two years serving at various churches in New Jersey before going to Chicago. In 2005, she was one of five nominees for bishop of California. Saturday was the first day of a two-week petition process which allows for open nominations for the next Episcopal bishop of Minnesota. A full slate, including both search committee ed hardy bottomscandidates and petition candidates, is to be announced on Sept. 25, and the election of the new bishop is scheduled for Oct. 31, during the annual convention in Minneapolis.

The Channel Wire
03 August, 2009
Apple recently told the U.S. Copyright Office that legalizing the "jailbreaking" of iPhones could enable hackers to launch denial of service attacks on cellular networks and even make it possible for criminals to escape detection. Apple is trying to convince the U.S. ed hardy scarvesCopyright Office to reject a proposal from the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF) that would legalize the practice of jailbreaking, or modifying iPhones to enable them to run non-Apple approved applications. Wired dug through comments Apple filed with the agency last week and uncovered several dire scenarios the Cupertino, Calif.-based firm envisions if the EFF's proposal is approved. Jailbreaking an iPhone provides access to its "baseband processor" (BBP) software, which connects the device to the network and enables it to use services. The BBP is so sensitive, Apple says, that modifying it could render the iPhone unable to connect to the network and coulded hardy shoes interfere with GPS functionality. According to Apple, this could also allow hackers to treat AT&T's cellular network like their own personal playground and, in the U.S., wreak untold havoc on AT&T's network. "In short, taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer -- to potentially catastrophic result," Apple said in the filing. Access to the BBP software would also enable hackers to modify the iPhone's Exclusive Chip Identification (ECID), which could let hackers avoid call charges and even ed hardy socksallow drug dealers to make anonymous phone calls, Apple said in the filing. Hackers operating in concert could parlay access to the iPhone's BBP software to bombard cellular towers with oversized packets that exceed the carrier's configuration, potentially rendering them unable to process calls or transmit data, according to the filing. "The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreakinged hardy sunglasses exemption would open the door to them," Apple said in the filing.
