Son Men Just Don’t Cry
May, 12, 2008
Laying back on my hospital bed recovering from a stroke, I was a witness to the Katrina disaster that befall New Orleans, As it unfolded on the cable network such as CNN, Fox News I tried to keep attention because I was heavily drugged , As I watched a man was interviewed and he was telling how the journalist how he saw the water take his wife and destroyed his house and pointed to where his house was and said the words ‘I have nothing left’ and exploded in tears and at that moment as he cried I was crying with him , here was two men crying and indirectly feeling the same pain.
When grown up boys are always teased that only girls cry and as we grow up we carry that mentality. When I saw that grown man explode in agony I knew it takes a lot to break a man and show his weakness in the face of tragedy, seeing him in tears and saying “I have lost everything I have nothing left”. These word where powerful coming from a man who all his life has been conditioned to hide and suppress their feelings.
This morning while sitting and drinking coffee I was reading about Burma and imagined how many men were forced to abandon the mind set of men don’t cry and the image of that man crying on CNN during Katrina came to mind, Tears are a mercy from the creator to mankind to relief the emotions of pain.
My dad died more then 12 years ago and If he was alive I would have loved to tell him “dad yes men to cry” and I love you very much and I understand you were trying to make me strong.
“Dad yes men do cry”
