Home Remedies for Canker Sores

Canker sores are also known as aphthous ulcers. These are small sores that occur inside the mouth. They can occur on the tongue and on the inside of the cheeks and lips these are the parts of the mouth that can move. They usually pop up alone, but sometimes they show up in small clusters.

Causes of Canker Sores:

1] Toothpaste and Mouthwash - If it contains SLS, or sodium lauryl sulfate, then your toothpaste can create a higher rate of canker sores.

2] Stress - This causes so many different health problems, with canker sores being just one of them.

3] Nutrition - Research has shown that being deficient in Vitamin B-1, B-6, B-12, and Vitamin C, helps in the formation of canker sores.

4] Hormones - For many women, going through their monthly menstrual cycle has been shown to cause more canker sores than at other times.

5] Trauma - If you've bitten your lip, or had a food with a sharp edge irritate your lip or gums, this will many times be the cause for a canker sore forming.

6] Food Allergies - Some of these foods include milk, cheese, oranges, apples, tomatoes, cereals, nuts, chocolate, and many more in addition.

7] The Herpes Simplex Virus

8] Inflammatory Bowel Disease

9] Immune problems

10] HIV AIDS suppresses the immune system.

Symptoms of Canker Sores:

These include fever, listlessness, swollen glands. It is best therefore that you make sure that your immune system is at its peak to avoid this infection and other opportunistic infection.

Types of Canker Sores:

There are two types of canker sores, minor sores and major sores. When you have minor sores, you will notice an oval lesion in your mouth, under your tongue or inside the chick which should clear between 1-2 weeks leaving no scar. Major sores however present themselves as large lesions and can last for a month or even years. They heal leaving an extensive scar.

Treatment of Canker Sores:

1] Rinsing out your mouth with a teaspoon of salt mixed with 8 ounces of water.

2] You can take 1-2 tablespoons of Maalox and mix it with a half tablespoon of liquid Benadryl.

3] Try using liquids or ointments that have a numbing agent such as benzocaine (Anbesol, Orabase, Tanac) that will help relieve the discomfort of canker sores.

4] Acidophilus - This is a probiotic, or beneficial bacterium. It is unknown exactly how it helps with canker sores but many people have found it to be a big help.

5] Myrrh - Myrrh is an ancient resin that is mention in the Bible. It speeds up the healing of all sores and skin wounds, and can also cure halitosis (bad breath).

6] Goldenseal - Herbal experts frequently recommend goldenseal for mouth sores

7] Vitamin supplements especially Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C will help heal the sore quickly.

8] You may also use wet tea bags, and press it on the ulcer. The tannic acid in tea is an astringent that will help relieve the pain and speed up healing.

9] For stress related canker sores, relaxation exercises may help avoid the development of canker sore.

10] ALOE VERA juice, used as a mouthwash several times a day, also helps to relieve the pain of canker sore and hasten the healing process.

11] BAKING SODA, applied as a paste, kills mouth bacteria promoting faster healing.

12] Soak a cotton swab in APPLE CIDER VINEGAR and dab on the ulcerated area several times each day.

13] RAW ONION, rubbed directly onto the ulcer, is among the most common traditional home remedies.

14] Alum - You can find alum in any grocery store spice area. Put some alum on your lip where the sore is located and it should quickly relieve the pain.
