Clashes left one person dead and 19 others wounded. Hamid Gaati, head of the local department of health, and a security official complained that US forces of preventing ambulances from transporting the wounded to hospital.

Diwaniya is a stronghold of Shi'ite militia loyal to anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The United States regards Sadr, a key political ally of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and his Mehdi Army militia as the greatest threat to peace in Iraq.
