Palestinians : Displaced and unwanted
munaeem | 24 December, 2006 20:21
- The number of registered Palestinian refugees (those displaced from their homes in 1948 or their descendants) grew from 914,000 in 1950 to more than 4.3 million last year
- They live for the most part in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, where a third of them live in refugee camps with high population density, cramped living conditions and inadequate basic infrastructure such as roads and sewers
- About 50,000 Palestinians live in Egypt, where they are treated as foreigners and not allowed to own property. Many find that education and employment can be difficult to obtain
- Discrimination against Palestinians is reported in Jordan. Their career options are limited to the private sector and they have little access to senior positions and state institutions
- Lebanon is home to the poorest refugees. The government resists the integration of Palestinians, seeking their return to Palestinian territories. Work permits and visas are complicated and difficult to obtain
Syria controls the entry of Palestinian refugees with Egyptian, Jordanian and Iraqi travel documents to prevent them resettling in Syria
