There is a large variety of laptops available in the market nowadays and it is hard to select a laptop that matches your needs in everyway. The intent of this buying guide is to provide recommendations regarding laptop configuration, memory, screen, weight, etc. to help you select best laptop according to your needs.

  • Memory: Large memory would be particularly beneficial for professionals who need to store lots of data on their laptops. It is also essential to have easy-to-access memory slots which will be beneficial for upgrading memory in future if required. You must go for large system memory (RAM), from 1 GB to 4 GB, if you are to use heavy graphic/video editing applications, etc. The new laptops go up to 4GB. At www.memorytogo.com, you can find Apple memory, Dell memory, HP memory, IBM memory, hard drives, external storage devices and more.
  • Higher Resolution: Resolution refers to the sharpness or brightness of the laptop screen. Higher resolution would mean better clarity of image on screen. It is measured in pixels/dots per inch (DPI). For those with weak eyesight, it is good to have 1280 by 800 resolution else you can go for 1920-by-1200 screen resolution.
  • Processor: Central Processing Unit (CPU) or processor is the main processing unit in a computer. It plays a major role in how your computer functions. Make sure the processor has "Mobile" written in the descreption as in Pentium 4-M or Pentium 4 Mobile This is because mobile computing processors consume less power as compared to desktop processors. It is also important to select suitable processor speed -- at least 2.0GHz.
  • Light Weight: Laptop weight is also an important consideration for selection because it will be the weight that you will need to carry over your shoulder everyday. Go for light weight laptop with sleek design rather than heavy weighing models.
  • Screen: Selection of screen is largely dependent upon your choice. Laptop screen size ranges from 12” to 17” and above. The popular screen size nowadays is 12”, but if you like larger picture, then you can select a bigger screen laptop. Do remember that large screen size will add to laptop weight.

Also there are 2 types of screen i.e. transflective screen or matted screen. Transflective screen are glossy screens that are suitable if you want to use your laptop for watching movies mostly. Matted screens on the other hand come with an anti-glare coating and are suitable for professionals who need to work on laptop for long hours.

  • Laptop Battery: Battery life is an important consideration when buying a laptop. Normally a 3 or 4 cell battery would last for around 2-3 hours. It is good to select a laptop which has a higher battery life and that can help you use your laptop for longer duration.
  • Laptop Brands: Always go for a branded laptop. Some top brand names in laptops are Dell laptops, Toshiba laptops, Sun Microsystem laptops, Apple laptops, Sony laptops, or HP laptops. Branded laptops come with 1-2 years warranty and also offer good technical support. Do check the details of warranty terms and conditions when buying a laptop.
