مدينة على البحر المتوسط، وأكبر الموانئ السورية، مركز محافظة اللاذقية. تشكل المدينة مركزاً تجارياً للمنطقة الزراعية المحيطة وتشتهر بزراعة التبغ. هي الميناء الرئيسي للبلاد وأهم صادراتها القطن والفواكه والتبغ. فيها جامعة تشرين التي أنشأت عام 1971. يعتقد أن تاريخ إنشاء اللاذقية يعود للقرن الثالث قبل الميلاد، حكمها الفينيقيون والرومان والبيزنطيون والصليبيون والعرب المسلمون والأتراك العثمانيون. بين الحربين العالميتين خضعت، كباقي سوريا، للانتداب الفرنسي. عدد السكان 284.000 (تقدير عام 1992) .
