Apple admits to faulty laptop batteries

Apple admits to faulty laptop batteries

Apple today issued a statement saying there are some known problems with MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks in which the battery might have poor performance, but there are no safety concerns. These performance problems include:
laptop Battery is not recognized causing an "X" to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar laptop Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power. laptop Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300. laptop Battery pack is visibly deformed.Macbook users have been issued with a software update to fix visibly deformed battery packs, among other problems
Apple has admitted that some batteries in its Macbook and Macbook Pro line of laptops have performance issues and has issued a software update to fix the problem.
Among the symptoms of batteries that are affected are swelling, the battery not being recognised or not charging, and a shorter than expected battery life.
"The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery," the company said.
Reports of problems, including swollen batteries, have been circulating since the laptops were launched in 2006.
In its support notes to users, Apple says battery packs which are "visibly deformed" are among the symptoms of battery problems.
The company advises users to install the update on all "MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007".
Apple has a support site up and if your battery experiences any of these symptoms you should download the software to try and correct the problem. If the issues with the battery persist, Apple has a replacement program in place. Information on their site will guide you through this.
Despite the problems, Macbook remains a successful range for Apple. The company recently reported that sales of its portable computers rose from 498,000 to 891,000 over the 12 months to March 31, helping boost quarterly profits to $770 million (£386 million).

Checklist for Your New Laptop

If you are planning to purchase a secondhand laptop then this check list may save you much frustration. We are now seeing many secondhand laptops coming onto the market. Many of them at prices which make them most attractive as a second machine. These notes are intended as a checklist to help you avoid the proverbial lemon.

What Type of laptop?

What processor: a 386, 486, Celeron, Pentium etc? As with the desktop PC the newer the processor usually the faster and better the performance, but note that contemporary tests of many laptops showed surprising differences in operating performance benchmarks among units of apparently similar specifications. A 386 may be useful for simple word processing under Win3.1, but typically such a machine would be inadequate to run WIN9x and its battery would probably be only a Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) with a shorter life compared with later battery technologies. Also early screen displays may be difficult to read in bright surroundings. A 486 with say at least 16 MB RAM could run Win9x. Later models have a faster processor that consumes more power so don't necessarily expect battery life to be far longer on the newer models. If you only want to do minor editing of documents and don't need massive processing power then a simple 486 or Pentium 100 with a couple of spare batteries and car adaptor might be ideal. Conversely if you want to listen to CDs, watch movies or demonstrate software then at least a 400 MHz (or better) processor will probably be necessary. Some laptops operate at a lower speed when running on battery to extend the battery life so be aware that performance benchmarks could vary between running on mains power or battery.

How Much RAM?
Random Access Memory is temporary memory your computer uses to run applications and data on your operating system. Generally the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will run. You need at least 256MB for Windows XP and Mac OS X. You need at least 1 Gig of RAM for Windows Vista but 2 Gigs or more will make it run smoother. However, 32-bit Operating Systems ONLY recognizes up to 3GB of RAM, while you need 64-bit systems to take full advantage of 4GB of RAM.

Extended Warranty?
Many manufacturers and retail stores will try to sell you extended warranties on any computer system you're considering. These warranties can be expensive so it is up to the individual buyer whether or not to purchase them. It will depend upon your own resources but if you're buying an expensive unit going with an extended warranty is a real option - especially when you consider replacement costs and the "peace of mind" such things supposedly brings.

A laptop battery guide : How to do better for more battery life.

For a laptop battery user, we should know Laptop Battery Basics :
Take care of your laptop battery and ensure that it will be ready to work properly when you need it most. Some general tips for laptop care include: avoid extreme temperatures, don't leave a laptop outside in cold weather or leave it in a hot car. Cold batteries can't create very much power and hot batteries will discharge very quickly. Use electrical power when available to keep battery charged. Don't let your laptop go for long periods of time without using the battery.

Ni-Cad (Nickel Cadmium battery), and Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) were once highly used having 1.2 Volts per cell.
Li-Ion (Lithium-ion) have now taken their place having 3.6-3.7 Volts per cell and are much more practical for today's power hungry notebooks. They have more power, higher voltage, less self drain, less weight, and can be smaller for the power you get. You will also not find the memory problems previous batteries were known for. I guess the only drawback is they're more expensive.

Smart/dumb batteries

You will find most if not all of today's notebooks use Li-Ion smart batteries. The fact that it's smart means it has circuits that report its charge level so you can estimate the battery life remaining or when it's about to run out.

Batteries are over-all measured in "mAh" (Milliamps/hour)

There are many things you can do to increase your battery life at the cost of performance, comfort, and features. What many will do that need to maximize their battery life for example if they're going on a trip, is get their settings in order before heading out. Here's a few things you can do:

Adjust LCD brightness
Most notebooks will be set to dim the LCD automatically by default from the factory. Unplug your system to check the brightness to verify. Some will do it over a few seconds slowly so you don't notice it so you have to watch carefully. If you feel you could deal with the display being even more dimmed, then (Windows) right click your desktop background, go to "Properties", then click the "Settings" tab at the top. Click "Advanced" and you will often find your settings for brightness in there which can vary depending on the graphics chipset and software on your system. Sometimes you can find the graphics control panel or settings hot link in your lower right hand system tray depending on software.

Turn it down to whatever you're comfortable with. The LCD is one of the biggest battery hogs most laptops face keeping fed.

Samsung's NC20 12-inch notebook : the successor to the previous NC10

Samsung's NC20 12-inch notebook : the successor to the previous NC10

Samsung going to launch NC20, the upcoming netbook that still in the progress. The Samsung NC20 will powered by 1.3GHz Intel Via Nano U2250 (u2350?) processor with 1GB memory and 160GB hard drive. On its 12.1-inch widescreen display running Windows XP Home operation system. It provide with ergonomic keyboard along with 1.3-megapixel webcam. It support Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity and 3-in-1 card reader. Samsung NC20 will available in February 2009 and priced at €461 ($641).

We can predict that the NC20 is the successor to the previous NC10. This netbook will be equipped with an LCD screen by 12.1 inches with a processor VIA Nano U225 at 1.3GHz, 160GB hard disk and 1GB memory. Samsung NC20 will have a weight of 1.5kg and its connectivity will use a built-in Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi 802.11b / g, Ethernet, a card reader 3in1 memory and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The netbook is expected to launch at around $642.

Samsung's NC10 netbook has barely been out long enough to get a footing in the market, and already we're learning of its natural successor. The NC20 will reportedly hit the ground running in February, and with it will come a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U225 processor, a 12.1-inch display, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet, a 3-in-1 card reader and a 1.3-megapixel camera. The 3.3-pound machine is expected to launch at around $642, which -- quite honestly -- sounds a touch on the high side to us. Who knows though, maybe that sticker includes a secondary display that we're just not privy to yet.

Perhaps we will hear more about the Samsung NC20 at CES, but we surely expect a number of these type of hybrid netbook and ultraportables to pop-up in the coming months. The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 might have been the first to put netbook guts into a larger chassis but MSI and ASUS have hinted at following this trend. Stay tuned, because we expect this emerging category of affordable 12 to 13-inch laptops to be a real headliner next month in Vegas.

According to Notebook Italia, Samsung announced new Netbook for the Next February, the NC20. Actually, it seems to be the NC10 successors, and it will feature a 12.1-Inch LCD Screen, a VIA Nano U225 CPU (1.3GHz), 1GB of memory, 160GB of HDD, as well as Bluetooth 2.0, Wifi b/g, 3-in-1 Card reader and 1.3 Mpix camera.

a Fast-growing Mini-notebooks - Netbook

A Netbook is a new type of laptop computer, defined by size, price, horsepower, and operating system. They are small, cheap, under-powered, and run either an old or unfamiliar operating system.

Netbooks run either Windows XP Home edition or Linux (not only is Linux unfamiliar to many, but the versions of Linux on Netbooks are not the mainstream popular distributions). They do not run XP Professional, Vista, or OS X. Microsoft arbitrarily restricts Netbooks from running the Professional Edition of Windows XP. Likewise, Apple arbitrarily restricts OS X to Apple hardware and it has never played in the low-end realm that Netbooks occupy.* Vista requires too much horsepower to run well on a Netbook. HP has been the only company to offer Vista on a Netbook. The price, however, was so high that it's debatable whether such a machine qualifies as a Netbook.

The market for netbooks -- small notebook PCs with even tinier prices -- exploded in the third quarter of this year, according to market researcher DisplaySearch LLC, as vendors aimed their wares at students during the back-to-school season.

The global market for netbooks, also known as mini-notebooks, was 5.61 million in the third quarter, up 160% from the second quarter, according to a statement today from DisplaySearch, an Austin-based research firm.

Asus Unveils First Four N Series Laptops

All based on Intel platforms, the four N series laptops announced - the N10, N20, N50 and N80, include features like the Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) which automatically allocates power depending on computing load in order to preserve battery life, the Linux-based Express Gate operating system that can boot up in just 8 seconds, and SmartLogon, a facial recognition system that makes than fingerprint reader look like a blast from the past.

The smallest N series laptop offered by Asus, the 10-inch LCD-equipped N10 has previously been detailed :

"We pretty much knew that the Atom-powered N10 laptop won't go cheap and the price tag posted on J&R's website comes as confirmation. At $849, the N10 is the most expensive Atom-equipped machine around but the price is relatively justified as it features a LED backlit 10-inch LCD screen, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB hard drive, a secsi shiny shell, a fingerprint reader and Windows Vista Business.

In addition to those above, the N10 come with dual graphics, the integrated graphics card and a GeForce 9300M GS. Of course they won't be able to work together in a hybrid configuration but the user will have the possibility of switching between them depending on graphics needs. The N10's retail release date is still unknown but that just gives us more time to think about spending $849 on an Atom laptop. "

and it is equipped with an Atom 1.6 GHz CPU, up to 2GB of RAM and up to 320GB of storage space, a 1.3 megapixel camera, plus GeForce 9300M GS graphics. The 12.1-inch N20 and 14.1-inch N80 both make use of Core 2 Duo (T9400/P8600/P8400/P7350/T5800) processors and can be equipped with up to 4GB of RAM, 320GB of storage, a 1.3 megapixel camera and either a DVD writer or a Blu-Ray combo drive.

Also powered by Core 2 Duo CPUs, the 15.4-inch N50 has a built-in air ionizer which should freshen up the air around the user and can have a maximum of 4GB of RAM, a 500GB SATA hard drive and a 2 megapixel camera. All N series laptops can come with Windows Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate) pre-installed with the N10 also adding Windows XP to the mix.

40 Hour Laptops - Pixel Qi's Black Magic Technology

Exciting news right here.

Quote: Sure, you can go out and get yourself a laptop right now that'll go 12.5-hours strong, but what if your portable computer could nearly outlast your Aigo A215? While L's mythical quad core lappie came close in theory, Mary Lou Jepsen's (the former CTO at OLPC) startup is hoping to eventually create a machine that can last between 20 and 40-hours between charges. Pixel Qi is being pretty closelipped [sic] right now (and understandably so) about what exactly it has going on, but we get the idea the secret sauce is in a highly efficient display that will require far less power than traditional LCDs. The best part? We could see one of these longevous notebooks in the pipeline as early as 2H 2009, so we'd probably start stocking up on Red Bull right about now.

Ericsson and Intel will jointly launch the most advanced notebook anti-theft technology

Notebook computer data security has always been the most important business customers is a major feature one of the ways to strengthen technology research firms each have spared no effort in one of the key tasks. Ericsson and Intel recently announced co-operation between the two will jointly launch the most advanced notebook anti-theft technology, when lost or stolen notebook after notebook users can remotely lock and tracking.

It is reported that, when Ericsson's mobile broadband module (3.5G HSPA) will be integrated into the notebook, and Intel's "PC anti-theft protection technology" (Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology) combined. As a result, lost in the post-notebook users to send text messages directly to mobile broadband notebook computer chips, chips to lock to receive information immediately passed to the Intel AT-P function can be locked for the other; once the notebook was recovered, again as long as Send text messages to unlock the notebook.

In addition to these, Ericsson's mobile broadband module also joined the GPS function, when the laptop was stolen after the user can also carry GPS global positioning and find the location of the notebook.

According to Ericsson revealed that the load-to-date anti-theft technology Centrino 2 notebooks will be introduced in the second half of 2009.

With the mobile broadband notebooks with more and more profit through the theft of an increasing number of cases, these notebooks provide anti-theft protection has become increasingly necessary, such anti-theft protection of the business market is very broad. For businesses or consumers, if lost or stolen notebook could cause significant economic losses, of which the sensitive data is particularly important.

Through the provision of Ericsson's mobile broadband module, sent on the network security management services to the mobile broadband module can send information, the module will be able to receive messages sent to Intel's anti-theft feature on the system. Then, based on Intel's notebook anti-theft technology will automatically adopt the appropriate measures, or lock the computer so that it can not be used. Once the notebook was to restore and re-positioning, will be issued to unlock the information so that the notebook will work again.

Editor point of view: It sounds a good anti-theft technology, but details still think there are some loopholes. On the one hand, the so-called GPS positioning system, once the notebook into the indoor environment or the basement will be very difficult to be found, the GPS is not a bad idea, but there will be a very practical use. On the other hand, the mobile phone text messages through mobile broadband modules for long-range lock, to break up is simple, as long as the thief inserted in the notebook on the SIM card out on the Shashi not, then this so-called anti-theft technology becomes A display.

Notebook Company to remind notebook users to upgrade Vista, such as SP1

Notebook Company, Inc. (South Africa well-known retailers notebook) Forelli CEO Christopher (Christopher Riley), said a few days ago, in the notebook computer running Vista will lead to a lot of technical problems.

The biggest problem is the driver, a lot of accessories there is no corresponding driver.

Riley said: "The driver was looking into the issue. So far, at least three Acer notebooks because the drive that can not run normal."

In addition, downloaded from the Internet is driving a very troublesome thing. To download a Acer notebook drive, 600 megabytes will need to download a software package. The financial software vendor Pastel recently uploaded a 3G-sized Vista drivers.

In addition, the notebook is installed on the Mcafee and Norton Anti-Virus software problems. Riley said: "I think the current notebook users should use the XP system until Microsoft releases Vista SP1."

Just after Vista was first released to consumers on Jan. 30, 2007, an article in the Windows Secrets Newsletter explained that the upgrade edition of the operating system could be installed on a "clean" hard drive. For whatever reason, Vista had been programmed to accept itself as a "qualifying product." This eliminated any need for users to purchase the full edition of Vista or to upgrade Vista only over an older instance of Windows.

The Feb. 1, 2007, article by Windows Secrets editorial director Brian Livingston explained that the procedure is supported by several built-in dialog boxes. This indicates that the trick had been deliberately included by Vista's developers.

To boost the sales of retail packages, Microsoft announced just over one month ago significant price cuts in Vista, beginning with Service Pack 1. The savings over the old prices vary among different Vista versions, such as Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. In the U.S., the list price of the upgrade edition is at least $100 cheaper than the full edition. Smaller savings exist in other markets, such as Canada and the European Union, as shown in the table below.

The price reductions on the Service Pack 1 version of Vista are even more significant because the upgrade trick still works in SP1, rendering unnecessary the purchase of Vista's full edition.

How to Increase your Laptop & Notebook Battery Power

The actual life of a laptop battery will vary with computer usage habits. In a survey by chipmaker Intel, 57% of laptop users said they wished their batteries lasted longer

Depending upon the model, a notebook battery usually lasts from 1 to 8 hours. However, with efficient battery usage, an hour or two of battery power can significantly be increased. You can save battery power by using the built-in battery saving modes and by following good notebook battery-saving practices.

Built-in battery-saving modes are Stand By and Hibernate. In the Stand By mode, open applications are stored in the RAM, the hard disks power down, the monitor switches off, but the processor goes on running. When you again perform some activity of the mouse or the keyboard, then the hard disk powers up, the monitor switches on, and the data from the RAM is activated, restoring your notebook exactly the way you left it.

Here are some tips to extend the life of your laptop battery:

1. Power down the display

Lowering the brightness may give you as much as an extra hour of runtime. And to increase even more the lifetime of your battery lower the screen resolution and color depth. This will decrease the workload on the GPU, thus extending the battery runtime.

To change this settings follow the steps below:

a. Open the Windows Start menu and click the Control Panel
b. Open the Display menu
c. In the new window click the Appearance tab. Under the Advanced button you can disable extra features like ClearType fonts and fade effects which will cut down on the CPU’s power consumption
d. Now go to the Settings tab
e. Here adjust the color depth to 16 bit. This is more than enough in office and internet applications.

2. Turn off unused devices

Many new notebooks provide a hard-wired On/Off switch for the Wi-Fi radio for this reason.
To save even more power go to the Control Panel, select System-->Hardware-->Device Manager, and disable the following items: Ethernet adapter, infrared transceiver, and Bluetooth radio . You should do this beacause having Bluetooth enabled and not using it actually consumes quite a bit of power.

3. Decrease hard drive activity

Defragmenting your hard drive regularly will decrease the frecuency with which your hard disk has to spin, therefore the battery will last longer. This is due to the fact that defragmentation optimizes the placement of the data on the drive and when a program makes a request for certain data it can be found more quickly.

To defragment your hard disk follow the steps in this article.

Another way to decrease hard drive activity is to set your paging file to a fix value, and this value should be around 1.5 times the amount the RAM you have installed on your computer.

To set the paging file go to the Control Panel and click through System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory Change.

4. Disable startup items

Startup items are programs that load into memory every time Windows boots up and cause other open applications to spill over virtual memory and adds to the CPU load, shortening battery runtime. Here is how to remove some of them that are not necessary.

5. Condition the battery

Battery memory is where the battery becomes conditioned to run for less time than it is designed to run. Say for example, you run your computer on battery for an hour and then you plug it back in to let it recharge. The battery will become conditioned to run only an hour before it runs out of juice.
