The work principle is based on blackbody radiation and the stefan-Boltzmann law.
A very efficient susceptor (Material that absorbs microwave energy) inside a tight cavity in the plate absorbs enough thermal energy to keep the heat retentive plate hot (Still hot after) for 1/2 hour. (45 minutes if preheated 1:15 minutes) in lab. tests on empty plates.
Naturally it depends on the temperature and quantity of the food. served. The plate is designed for keeping the food hot, not for heating up cold food.
