7 Ramadan 1427 Hijriah

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 3

Arabic text of ayah

Dhalika bi annahum amanu thumma kafaru fa tubi'a 'ala qulubihim fahum la yafqahuna

That is because they believed, then they rejected Faith: So a seal was set on their hearts: therefore they understand not

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

He has decreed them to be hypocrites because they reverted from faith to disbelief and exchanged guidance for misguidance. Therefore, Allah stamped and sealed their hearts and because of it, they cannot comprehend the guidance, nor any goodness can reach their hearts. Truly, their hearts neither understand, nor attain guidance.

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 4
12 December, 2005

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 4

Arabic text of ayah

Wa idha raaytahum tu'jibuka ajsamuhum wa in yaqulu tasma' li qawlihim ka annahum khushubun musannadatun yahsaboona kulla sayhatin 'alayhim humu al-'aduwwu fa ihdharhum qatalahumu Allahu anna yufakuna

When you look at them, their exteriors please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are like pieces of timber propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded!

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

Hypocrites have a graceful outer appearance and are eloquent. When one hears them speak, he will listen to their eloquent words, even though hypocrites are truly weak and feeble, full of fear, fright and cowardice. Every time an incident occurs or something frightening happens, they think that it is headed their way. This is indicative of their cowardice.

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 2
24 November, 2005
5 Ramadan 1427 Hijriah

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 2

Arabic text of ayah

Ittakhadhoo aymanahum junnatan fa saddu 'an sabili Allahi innahum saa ma kanu ya'maluna

They have made their oaths a screen: thus they obstruct from the Path of Allah. truly evil are their deeds.

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

the hypocrites shield themselves from Muslims when they falsely and sinfully swear to be what they are not in reality. Some Muslims were deceived because they did not know their falsehood, and thus, thought that they were Muslims. Some Muslims believed what hypocrites say and even imitated them in their outward behavior. However, inwardly, hypocrites seek the destruction of Islam and its people, and this is why trusting them might bring great harm to many people.

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 1

 | 4 Ramadan 1427 Hijriah

Surah al-Munafiqun ayah 1

Arabic text of ayah

Idha jaaka al-munafiquna qalu nashhadu innaka larasulu Allahi wa Allahu ya'lamu innaka larasuluhu wa Allahu yashhadu inna al-munafiqina lakadhiboona

When the Hypocrites come to you, they say, "We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger, and Allah bears witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars.

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah, from Tafsir Ibn Kathir:

Allah the Exalted states that the hypocrites pretended to be Muslims when they went to the Prophet . In reality, they were not Muslims, but rather the opposite. Their claims [are lies], even though it is true about the Prophet. But they did not believe inwardly in what they declared outwardly, and this is why Allah declared their falsehood about their creed.

Hijabiris2083 - Hiding Identity or Adapting Change?
12 May, 2004

shawlsA recent editorial published in Khaleejtimes.com fuels the debate again between those of us who respect the “hijab” as our identity and those of us who want to simply be our “normal selves”. The editorial by an American Muslim convert highlights the Ahadeeth (sayings) of the prophet (saws) regarding women who decide to chose an alternate path to modesty as prescribed in Islam.

The issue I believe is not that whether women who choose not to wear the Hijab or dress modestly understand the Isalmic commandments, but rather has to do with the levels of faith. If you have faith (also called “Iman”), you will respect that faith and Iman (by following the commandments of the prophet and Quran). If you don’t, you will simply adopt other belief systems that would overtake the faith of Islam. Those other belief systems, for example, empowers the non-Hijab Muslim women to adapt the new change.

Again, it’s all about the level of faith and this concept applies to all walks of life. You opt to do certain things depending on the depth of your belief and commitment (unless you are being forced in some ways).

What does Islamophobia, Breast cancer and Hijab have in common? (by iris2083)
12 January, 2004

hijabEveryone knows that Muslims, especially those living in North American and European countries have faced a lot of discrimination after the events of 9/11. Muslim women for example have constantly been criticized in the media and elsewhere about the Hijab and their Islamic lifestyles in general. While Muslims have reacted and responded to such discrimination in many ways, the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) decided to take a different approach on October 26th, 2007.

The Canadian Islamic Congress organized an event called the “National Pink Hijab Day” and gave away pink hijabs to Muslim as well as non-Muslim women to raise awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” Foundation. This foundation’s is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. CIC’s organizers’ objective was to raise the awareness of Islamophobia, discrimination that Muslim women face in covering their heads and hair using the Hijab along with supporting the cause of breast cancer that organizers hoped will garner wider support and awareness of all issues.

A good idea or not?

The question does come up whether this sets a good precedent for such causes or does it hurt the cause of Islam and Hijab even more? CIC seems to be very happy with the turnout of people on October 26th, 2007. However, there are many who do raise the question that mixing the issues of disease with unrelated religious matters may actually turnoff even those who have no biases against Islam, Hijab or any Muslim issues.

Your comments are welcome !

Old copies of Quran in great demand

Old copies of Quran in great demand

old quranIf you happen to own a copy of old Quran, it might be worth that of a whole treasure. A news article published on topix.net covers about a recent auction in London where a copy of Quran dated June 1203 was sold for $2.3 millions. Earlier estimated to fetch up to $715,000, the antique manuscrept of Quran signed by Yahya bin Muhammad ibn ‘Umar on 17 Ramadan 599 earned $2,327,300 to the Hispanic Society of America. During the same auction, yet another copy dated back to 10th century sold for $1,870,000.

Quite interestingly, several libraries and museums across the globe boastfully preserve old copies of Quran. However, the oldest known manuscrept of Quran is possessed by Mohammad bin Nasser Al-Kudry, a Saudi residing at Abha. You would wonder at the fact that the copy carries the date of the Hijrah year 116, which was more than 1,300 years ago.

The library of the Great Mosque in Sanaa proudly displays a very old manuscrept of Quran handwritten by Imam Ali bin Abu Taleb, Zayd bin Thabit and Salman Al-Farsi. A library in Mashhad at Iran has the world’s largest collection of about 11,000 Quranic manuscrepts dated back from the first century.

Based on a report published by Quatari daily named The Peninsula, Saeed Ali Al Suwaidi, a Quatari auctioned a calligraphic copy of Quran for $4.3 millions, which is about 400 years old. Notably, the manuscrept was completed over five long years ending with 1034 Hijri.
