People and Culture
12 January, 2010

This was a main part of copper miners' diets. A pasty is a mixture of meat, potatoes, rutabaga, carrots and onions wrapped in a crust made of flour and lard. Traditionally Cornish, they have even sparked local events such as the Pasty Fest, where there are eating contests (with consumption of pasties, of course), games, events, and even a tug of war event where the losers take a dive into an inflatable pool filled with ketchup. One of the biggest parts of the culture of not only Calumet, but the entire Copper Country is the pasty. In Fiction

In 1960 the German navy Bundesmarine renamed a Type XXI submarine Wilhelm Bauer

After the end of the sea devil Bauer soon left Russia. When he realized he wouldn’t find support for another submarine he took to other projects. In 1863 Bauer managed to raise a sunken ship by means of inflatable balloons made of canvas. But all his more ambitious plans failed because of a complete lack of funding. Disappointed by this Bauer died in 1875 in Munich.

It would be wrong to claim that the German submarine fleet of the world wars was directly descended from Wilhelm Bauer’s prototypes. The modern submarine began its history with the inventions of Simon Lake and John Philip Holland. The submarine pioneers of the 19th century however - de Villeroi, Monturiol, Hunley and others - were well aware of Bauer’s invention and derived inspiration and many ideas from it. And without these men, we wouldn’t have the technically advanced submarines we have today.
They were also mentioned in Matthew Reilly's bestselling book "Temple", where they are constantly eating people that fall in the water. As well, it was featured rather prominently in "Amazonia" by James Rollins wherein a Special Forces soldier is eaten by a Black Caiman after it capsizes the inflatable boat in which he is riding.

Advertising Balloons: The Five W's

Carl’s Childhood
04 December, 2009

According to Carl's description of his childhood, he was a rather lonely child without any toys. His parents owned one square mile (2.6 km2) of land that served as their farm. The nearest neighbor lived half a mile (800 m) away, but he was more an acquaintance to Barks' parents than a friend. The closest school was about two miles (3 km) away and Carl had to walk that distance every day. The rural area had few children, though, and Barks later remembered that his school had only about eight or ten students including him. He had high praise for the quality of the education he received in that small school. "Schools were good in those days," he used to say.

The lessons lasted from nine o'clock in the morning to four o'clock in the afternoon and then he had to return to the farm. There he remembered not having anybody to talk to, as his parents were busy and he had little in common with his brother.
In 1908, William Barks (in an attempt to increase the family income) moved with his family to Midland, Oregon, some miles north of Merrill, to be closer to the inflatable company that were new at the time. He established a new stock-breeding farm and sold his produce to the local bouncy houses.

Nine-year-old Clyde and seven-year-old Carl worked long hours there. But Carl later remembered that the crowd which gathered at Midland's market place made a strong impression on him. This was expected, as he wasn't used to crowds up until then. According to Carl, his attention was mostly drawn to the cartoon cowboys that frequented the market with their revolvers, strange nicknames for each other and sense of humor.

By 1911, they had been successful enough to move to Santa Rosa, California. There they started cultivating vegetables and set up some orchards. Unfortunately, the profits were not as high as William expected and they started having financial difficulties. William's anxiety over them was probably what caused his first nervous breakdown.

As soon as William recovered, he made the decision to move back to Merrill. The year was 1913, and Carl was already twelve years old; but, due to the constant moving, he had not yet managed to complete grade school. He resumed his education at this point and finally managed to graduate in 1916.

1916 served as a turning point in Carl's life for various reasons. First, Arminta, his mother, died in this year. Second, his hearing problems, which had already appeared earlier, had at the time become severe enough for him to have difficulties listening to his teachers talking. His hearing would continue to get worse later, but at that point he had not yet acquired a hearing aid. Later in life, he couldn't do without one. Third, the closest high school to their farm was five miles (8 km) away and even if he did enlist in it, his bad hearing was likely to contribute to his learning problems. He had to decide to stop his school education, much to his disappointment.

How to Plan a Summer Party: Water Slides & Outdoor Movies
02 December, 2009

When the end of the school season is approaching, it means fun summer parties! Planning a party can sometimes be so overwhelming that families avoid throwing them. That doesn’t have to be the case from now on - often it is the simplest parties that are the most successful!

While a summer party is fun, they can also be a great way to reconnect with neighbors and school friends, break up a summer full of sports, vacations and camp, and spend quality time celebrating with your family.
By following some simple suggestions, such as including inflatable rentals, water slides, and outdoor movies in your plan, your party is sure to be an easy success. Plan your party around a specific big-ticket item, such as an inflatable obstacle course, to get the party-goers excited.

--Invitations
Get things started by sending out invitations early. Have children create their own construction paper invitations or get creative and hand deliver balloons with invitations inside, cupcakes with save-the-date information on the icing, or hand-made adventure park admission tickets that children can present to access one of the inflatable rentals at your party.

The most important thing is to let people know the date of the party, the time and any special instructions required - like wearing a bathing suit!

--Food

Food and beverages don’t have to be extravagant - consider finger foods, pizza and outdoor classics such as hamburgers and hot dogs. Just remember to make it fun and easy to clean up! An outdoor party in the summer is an excellent time to break out popsicles for the kids and fresh fruit like watermelon or peaches.

Another option, an ice cream sundae bar equipped with fixings such as ice cream, candy toppings and chocolate sauce, is a sweet end to any meal. Drinks can be as simple as pitchers of lemonade or a cooler filled with water bottles or cans of soda。

--Inflatable Rentals

Once the food and snacks are planned out, consider entertainment options. Inflatable rentals are a big hit with children of all ages, and adults are even able to partake in the fun! Allow children to slide down inflatable slides, navigate through inflatable obstacle courses, or test out their champion skills in an inflatable boxing ring - the options for outdoor inflatable rentals are limitless!

--Nighttime

After a tiring day playing in the inflatable rentals, wind down the party with a number of outdoor movie options. Viewing screens that project movies on an inflatable surface are sure to be a crowd pleaser. Set up a viewing area outside and pick from a variety of children’s movies, along with classic movie snacks like popcorn and gummy worms, to end the night. Provide blankets and lawn chairs for everyone to relax and make sure there are flashlights or outside lamps so that everyone is safe.

The options are unlimited when it comes to planning a spring party. Ensure that a detailed checklist is set up to guarantee that inflatable rentals will be at the party, the movie is picked out, and the food is prepared for the day of the party. After that, sit back, relax, and have fun!

How to coach team party with an inflatable toy
01 December, 2009

If you are responsible for a kid’s athletic club and coaching a kid’s basketball, volleyball or baseball team, which kind of victory gift you will give them? Do all of them feel satisfied and get impressive memory on each championship celebration? Here is a good and useful suggestion for you.

Holding a victory bash with an inflatable bouncer is the largest surprise in the celebration party, and those kids aged twelve years old and below would definitely and crazily love this party and enjoy great fun. Inflatable bouncers are those big, interactive and life-size toys that kids can jump, slide, enter into and play.

Active girls and boys would surely love these inflatable sets, once they are on the sight of this kind of colorful, sportive and educational inflatable toys. You would find all of them being fit and active to play around inflatable moonwalks for hours. They will play to their heart’s desire and happily celebrate championship.

Generally, kids are unlike grownups. It is hard to coach a team consisting of kids aged 12 or below to win championship. Since grownups could be motivated for playing by many reasons, such as high salary, wonderful rewards, honor and social state, kids just care about fun and interest from games. Thus choosing a best interesting team game to motivate kids for participation is very important.

Now, just let them know you’ll treat them to a day’s worth of fun in an inflatable castle after winning every game. You could also tell them to invite their intimate friends, esteemed parents and even teachers to join in the fun. This way, you could find they will be more anticipative of the championship. As a result, you could get good chance of coaching a champion team and make you coach of the year too.

Generally, the size for inflatable castle, inflatable bouncers, inflatable jumpers and inflatable slides are large, more than 10 kids could play at the same time. Everybody could have fun altogether happily. Please don’t doubt the potential motivating powers of inflatable toys. if you ever dream to be a best coach ,now inflatable toys could make your dream come true and lead your team more aggressive active ,powerful with high team work spirit.

Liferaft versus Lifeboat
19 November, 2009

Modern lifeboats are on the Sapphire Princess. Note the fully enclosed nature (with sliding hatches) and the small propeller screw providing mobility.

Liferafts in general are collapsible and stored in a heavy-duty fiberglass canister, and also contain some high-pressure gas to allow automatic inflatables to the operations size. SOLAS and military regulations require these to be sealed, never opened by the ship's crew, they are removed at a set periodicity and sent to a certified facility to open and inspect the liferaft and contents. In contrast, a lifeboat is open, regulations require a crewmember to inspect it periodically and ensure all required equipment is present. Most modern Lifeboats have some form of a motor; liferafts usually do not have a motor. Large lifeboats require some form of a davit or launching system (there might be multiple lifeboats on one), and that does require human intervention to commence or be involved in the launch process. Thus, launch of lifeboat is longer and has higher risk of failure due to human factor; however, lifeboats don't suffer from inflation systems failures like liferafts. Recently, self-rescue lifeboats have been introduced for use by boats with less people aboard: these are rigid dinghies with CO2-inflated exposure canopies and other safety equipment. Like the lifeboats used before the advent of the gasoline engine, these self-rescue dinghies are designed to let the passengers propel themselves to safety by sailing or rowing.

Some ships have freefall lifeboats, stored on a significantly downward sloping slipway, dropping into the water as holdback is released. If launched, return to the launching system is only possible at a pier using a large crane, and such lifeboats are considerably heavier to survive the impact with water. Freefall lifeboats are used for their capability to launch nearly instantly and high reliability, and since 2006 are required1 on bulk carriers that are in danger of sinking too rapidly for conventional lifeboats to be released.

Tankers are required to carry fireproof lifeboats, tested to survive a flaming oil or petroleum product spill from the tanker. Fire protection of such boats is provided by insulation and sprinkler system, which has pipe system on top, through which water is pumped and sprayed to cool the surface. This system, while prone to engine failure, allows fireproof lifeboats to be built of fiberglass and not only metal.

A rigged WW II airborne lifeboat in front of a Vickers Warwick from which it would be dropped to survivors on parachutes.

United States Navy liferafts
The United States Navy uses 25-person and 50-person inflatable life rafts onboard all USN ships. Smaller combatant craft often use 6, 10 or 15-person commercial life rafts. New 25-person life rafts are designated MK7 and are carried aboard all classes of USN ships. Aircraft carriers and some amphibious ships often carry MK8 50-person life rafts which offer substantial weight reduction and additional deck edge space for weapons or other equipment. The number of life rafts carried on USN ships is determined based on the maximum number of personnel carried aboard plus 10% as a safety margin. Aircraft carriers carry either 254 MK7 life rafts or 127 MK8 life rafts. While both models are very similar to heavy-duty commercial life rafts, USN life rafts use breathable air as the inflation gas rather than carbon dioxide to ensure full inflation within 30 seconds in Arctic environments.

Base material used on MK7 life rafts is polyurethane coated fabric which has very high durability. Old MK6 and a few MK8 life rafts are manufactured of neoprene-coated fabric, however, the majority of MK8 life rafts are also manufactured of polyurethane fabric. The lifeboat is compact and made of separate compartments, or tubes, as a redundancy against puncture. Two air cylinders containing dry, breathable compressed air provide initial inflation. Depending on the model life raft, each cylinder may contain up to 5000 psi of compressed air. Each life raft is equipped with an external, automatically actuated light beacon and internal lighting. Power is provided by lithium batteries.

USN life rafts are stowed in heavy-duty fiberglass canisters and can be launched manually or automatically should the ship begin to sink. Automatic launching and inflation is actuated by a change in pressure sensed by a hydrostatic release device should the ship begin to sink. A hand pump is provided to "top-off" pressure at night when temperatures drop and internal air pressure decreases. Relief valves are installed in each tube to prevent overpressure. Repairs to holes or rips up to six inches in length can be made using special sealing clamps. Occupants in USN life rafts are protected from wind, rain and sun by built-in canopies which automatically inflate. Hatches are sealable to prevent rain and seawater from entering the life rafts. Survival equipment includes: manual reverse osmosis declinator (MROD), bottles of fresh water, individual food packets, fishing kit, signaling mirror, rocket and smoke flares, flashlight, spare sea anchor, first aid kit, paddles, spare batteries and bulbs, and aluminized mylar sheets ("Space Blankets") to aid in caring for victims of hypothermia.

Other usages
When the Apollo 13 command module was damaged by an explosion in the service module, the lunar module was used as a lifeboat as it had separate life support, propulsion and guidance systems that remained functional (though it was not a lifeboat in the sense that it was detached from the main vehicle).

Any small self-contained spacecraft designed to operate as a life-preserving vehicle or escape pod for the crew of a spacecraft in distress might also be termed a "lifeboat", and this usage frequently appears in science fiction.

Inflatable Jump-Sticles
16 November, 2009

You might be wondering what jump-sticles are. Well, it is an infusion of two words: jump and obstacles. Now that you know what it means, picture the two words in your mind. Isn't that a very exciting activity for your kids? Indeed it is. Jump-sticles are inflatable jumpers filled with exciting obstacles to level up their game. With these toys, your kids won't be merely bouncing on the inflatable toy all day long - they can run, go under, and hop over the obstacle courses integrated in each set.

This type of obstacle inflatable toy is the perfect for parties or whenever there are two or more kids hanging out to play. They can race against each other as they go through the obstacles built into the toy. The first one to the finish line is the winner. You can give toys, candies, and other freebies to the winner and it is going to be a lot of fun - especially if you are hosting a party or a kid's get together.

Obstacle inflatable toys are a great fun to your kids. It would encourage them to flex their muscles and get involved with physical activities. It is sad to note that games involving the muscles are a little neglected these days. Nowadays, kids find TV and computer games more fun than playing ball or running around. And those toys are not very beneficial to a child's health, as they can force them to be couch potatoes at a very young age. It may even be the cause of childhood obesity.

So bring back natural fun to your kid's eyes. Instead of buying them a cool computer game set on his next birthday, why not surprise him with an inflatable jump-sticle? His eyes will surely light up and play with it until sun down! What's more, it is an activity that the rest of the family can enjoy. You can also invite his other friends to join the fun!

Inflatable jump-sticles are easy to install and maintain. It comes in a complete set, which includes the jumpers, repair kit, blower, manual, and all other stuff you might need. They are not hard to put up either. In fact, all you have to do is to leave the blower on and the giant inflatable obstacle castle will come alive in just a few minutes!

Jump-sticles are even more educational than most types of toys - not to mention that it can induce muscle work in your kids. Make your kids well-rounded individuals. Let them play outdoors with other kids. Give them a gift they wouldn't forget all their life

The Development of the Cartoon
06 November, 2009
Cartoons both amuse and engage; they are able to point out the foibles and complexities of humankind in direct, illuminating, and original ways. From humble beginnings, the cartoon has progressed to address social, cultural, and religious taboos in provocative and amusing ways. It is the most subversive of mainstream arts. Though often intrinsically bound up with the Disney tradition, the cartoon has a variety of histories worldwide, and diverse practices reflecting the cultures of the nations in which it has been produced. The animated cartoon emerged out of the early experiments in the creation of the cinematic moving image. As early as 1798, Etienne Robertson constructed the Phantasmagoria, a sophisticated magic lantern to project images. It was followed by Joseph Ferdinand Plateau's Phenakistascope in 1833, William Horner's Zoetrope in 1834, Franz Von Uchatius's Kinetoscope in 1853, Henry Heyl's Phasmatrope in 1870, and Emily Reynaud's Praxinoscope in 1877, devices that in some way projected drawn or painted moving images. With the development of the cinematic apparatus came the first intimations of animation, at first accidents or trick effects in the work of figures like Georges Mollies (1861–1938), and the emergence of lightning cartooning—the accelerated movement of drawings by manipulating camera speeds—particularly in the British context, where Harry Furniss, Max Martin, Tom Merry, and Lancelot Speed defined an indigenous model of expression related to British pictorial traditions in caricature and portraiture. It was also the Britons J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith, working in the United States, who saw the potential of a specific kind of animation filmmaking in The Enchanted Drawing (1900) and Humourous Phases of Funny Faces (1906), though these were essentially little more than developments in lightning cartooning. While stop motion 3-D animation progressed in a number of countries, it was only with the creation of Émile Cohl's (1857–1938) Fantasmagorie (1908), a line-drawn animation influenced by French surrealism, that the 2-D animated film was seen as a distinctive form. Cohl was later to work in the United States, animating George McManus's comic strip The Newlyweds (1913), one of a number of popular comic strips that characterized early American cartoon animation, others being Krazy Kat, The Katzenjammer Kids, and Mutt and Jeff. Winsor McCay (1871–1934), an illustrator and graphic artist, made Little Nemo in Slumberland (1911), based on his own New York Herald comic strip, and one of the first self-reflexive cartoons, the aptly titled Winsor McCay Makes His Cartoons Move (1911). McCay's influence on the history of animation cannot be overstated. He created one of the first instances of the horror genre in The Story of the Mosquito (1912); "personality" animation in the figure of Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), which was featured in an interactive routine with McCay in his Vaudeville show; and "documentary" in an imitative newsreel-style depiction of The Sinking of the Lusitania (1918). As early as 1913, Raoul Barré and John R. Bray were developing systematic, "industrial" methods for the production of animated cartoons using variations of what was to become the "cel" animation process, where individual drawings (later, cels) were made, each with a slight change in a character's position, and then aligned with backgrounds that remained the same, using a peg-bar system. By replacing each drawing in a sequence of movement and photographing it frame by frame, the Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur (1914). Illusion of continuous movement occurred. As well, a production system was emerging that echoed the hierarchical organization of the Taylorist production processes characteristic of industrial America, as in the production of Model T Fords. Though the Fleischer brothers (Max [1883–1972] and Dave [1894–1979]), Paul Terry (1887–1971), and Pat Sullivan (1887–1933) with Otto Messmer all emerged as viable producers of cartoons, it was Walt Disney (1901–1966) who effectively took the Ford model and created an animation "industry." Disney's dominance has meant that Terry's Aesop's Film Fables of the 1920s, Sullivan and Messmer's hugely successful and graphically inventive Felix the Cat cartoons (1919–1928), and the Fleischer brothers' work in sound synchronization and the use of rotoscoping—the tracing of live action figure movement to achieve animated characters drawn frame by frame—have been largely forgotten. In his initial work in the early 1920s, Disney created Laugh-O-Grams, which were distinctive in featuring his own animation, and Alice comedies, which reversed the conceit of the Fleischer brothers' "Out of the Inkwell" series. The latter featured a cartoon clown in a live-action environment, while Disney placed a live-action Alice in a cartoon world. Modern cartoon has evolved into different styles, used in Disney, festival, sales promotions, play center etc. Up to date, one of the parts has developed into inflatable cartoon, such as Dinosaur cartoon series, Little Bear cartoon, Fire Lion cartoon, Tiger cartoon, Rabbit cartoon, Donald Duck cartoon, Kitty cartoon, Clown cartoon, Panda cartoon, Kangaroo cartoon, Dolphin cartoon, inflatable cartoon, etc, the height of which can reach 14 meters or more. In the trial, the advantage of this inflatable cartoon has appeared and been enjoyed great popularity.

Toy Balloons Color Our Life
03 November, 2009
A toy balloon is an inflatable object which is often made of plastic or natural, biodegradable rubber. Rubber balloonsNatural Rubber, also known as latex, is a highly flexible substance which is extracted from certain plants. Latex balloons contain small amounts of nitrosamines, but the amount which they release is non-hazardous. Nitrosamine is used as a solvent when processing latex. There are methods of reducing the amount of Nitrosamine in the finished product, but these methods are expensive. Most professionally used latex balloon brands produce a 100% biodegradable balloon that takes less time than an oak left to degrade. Foil balloonsInflatable foil balloons are made from plastics, such as aluminized PET film. Foil balloons are not elastic like rubber balloons, so that detailed and colorful pictures printed on their surfaces are not distorted when the balloon is inflated. Foil balloons are thus named because they sometimes have a metallic coating to make them shiny; however there have been concerns about metallic balloons causing short circuits when caught in overhead power lines. Because metallic balloons can cause power outages, it is recommended that the metallic balloons not only be tied by a string or ribbon with no metal in it, but also securely tied down by a weight to prevent the balloon from floating away. When finished using the balloons, cut the balloon to release the helium and dispose in a trash can. FillingEvery toy balloon has an opening through which gases are blown into it. Balloons are usually filled by using one's breath, a pump, or a pressurized gas tank. The opening can then be tied off or clamped. Foil balloons are typically self-sealing. By filling a balloon with a gas lighter than air, such as helium, the balloon can be made to float. Helium is the preferred gas for floating balloons, because it is inert and will not catch fire (like hydrogen) or cause toxic effects when inhaled. Small, light objects (postcards, in balloon mail for example) are sometimes placed in balloons along with helium and released into the air and, when the balloon eventually falls, the object inside might be found by another person. Rubber balloons can also be filled with liquids (usually water) and can burst when they impact a solid object. Liquid-filled balloons are commonly referred to as water balloons or water bombs and used in playful fights, and sometimes vandalism. FormMost toy balloons are a simple oval-like shape. Other balloons are longer and more cylindrical. Long balloons are often twisted and bent into simple or intricate shapes which will hold their form when released. Balloon artists are people who quickly twist balloons into familiar or abstract shapes using the techniques of balloon modeling, usually for profit. Toy balloons are used as decorations and/or advertising space. Balloons are usually purchased in deflated form; however some party stores and vendors at special events will fill their balloons before selling them. While toy balloons are primarily a toy, they are also sometimes used for demonstrations in classrooms.
