"shock jocky", maybe a little to often interrupts the academic for the
sake of ostensible radio drama. Dr. Jones comes off as a prudent
scientist valuing accuracy over sound bite drama. But that's just my

compiled against the gov't. As an aside, a show on demolitions on the
History channel had an excellent sequence on thermite-explosions taking
down buildings. They described how a steel beam is angle-cut so that it
explodes outward and allows an easier take-down of the building. They
also show after-effects of a demolition. The photographs in the History
channel demolition channel are eeirily similar to the pictures of the
destroyed WTC. Anyway, it doesn't matter because the gov't keeps caging
protestors, forcing book outlets to stop selling books like "America
Deceived" by E.A. Blayre III and spies on every phone call. Add those
abilities with a military and it will be difficult to overcome.

A statement released last night by the foreign affairs ministry named one of the British nationals as Rashid Rauf, 26. Rauf's brother, Tayib Rauf, 22, was arrested in Birmingham and is one of 19 people on a list issued by the Treasury of terrorist suspects whose assets should be frozen. The 19 are among 24 suspects arrested over the alleged plot, at least four of whom are converts to Islam. They are being held at London police stations and detectives have 28 days to question them. A Pakistani security official confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that Rashid is the elder brother of Tayib Rauf, who was arrested on Thursday in Birmingham. Rashid Rauf is believed to be wanted for questioning by West Midlands police investigating the murder of his uncle. He is understood to have left his home in Birmingham following the stabbing of Mohammed Saeed, 54, near his home in Alum Rock in April 2002. The arrests in Pakistan are thought to have triggered the decision to move against suspected plotters in Britain, who had been watched since last December.
Security officials played down suggestions of "puppet masters" in Pakistan, saying that the plot was largely based in Britain. However, they have acknowledged a Pakistani connection. Tony Blair yesterday telephoned President Pervez Musharraf - a key ally of the West's "war on terror" - and thanked him for Pakistan's "valuable" help. A Pakistani security official said Rashid Rauf's frequent use of text messages to Britain was the reason for his arrest outside an internet shop in Zhob, in the border region of Balochistan. He will be questioned to establish whether there was anything sinister in the communications, and other arrests are expected. The foreign ministry statement also said there were "indications of Afghanistan-based al-Qa'eda connections" in the case, but did not elaborate. An official said the five Pakistanis arrested were believed to have been helping as "facilitators" and were held a week ago. Some of these facilitators were said to be linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group that has been held responsible for the December 2001 attack on the Indian parliament and is suspected over the murder of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Britain's terrorism warning level remained at critical last night - its highest state of alert - which indicates that an attack is thought to be imminent. John Reid, the Home Secretary, appealed for vigilance and warned that the police could not be 100 per cent certain that everyone involved in the plot had been held. But he added: "We think the main suspects are in custody." Police sources confirmed that they held "all those on our arrest list" on Thursday. Douglas Alexander, the Transport Secretary said last night that airline passengers were likely to face tighter restrictions in the future. Speaking after senior ministers met representatives of the aviation industry in Whitehall, he said that while the present restrictions on hand baggage were unlikely to remain indefinitely, there would be no return to the previous arrangements. Mr Alexander was speaking after a day in which airlines and airports struggled to restore a semblance of normality to the system during the height of the holiday season. More stringent security demands from the United States left thousands of passengers and dozens of planes stranded on airport aprons waiting for permission to take off. Scotland Yard disclosed last night that almost 1,100 people have been arrested as terrorist suspects in Britain in the five years since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. Most have been Islamic extremist jihadis. Between September 2001 and 30 June 2006, a total of 1,047 people were arrested for offences under the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT). This total does not include a number of arrests since, including the 24 in the airlines plot. Of the 1,047, a total of 158 have been charged with offences under TACT, while 174 have faced non-terrorism charges, some involving serious allegations such as murder, and 69 have dealt with under immigration law. The fact that more than 600 mainly Muslim men and women have been released without charge will fuel criticisms that the Government's anti-terrorism strategy discriminates against the Muslim community. However, security chiefs have defended the figures, arguing that the system for investigating suspicions of terrorism is working as intended, as well as establishing possible guilt, it establishes the innocence of people otherwise suspected by the general public. They also argued that police take the risk of waiting to catch terrorists "red handed" with bombs. "The reality of current terrorist methodology is of extensive conspiracies, which often require executive action at an early stage because of the risk of mass atrocities," Scotland Yard said. "It should also be noted that not all suspects who are charged with serious offences, are charged under the Terrorism Act 2000, examples of offences which suspects might be charged with include conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to attempt murder, conspiracy to cause explosions, possession of automatic weaponry and fraud offences." |

The article points to several interesting facts to prove its case. There is firstly the time lag between the date of publication of the cartoons (Sep 30, 2005) and the trajectory of the protests. Then there is the fact that depicting the Prophet Mohammed (at all) is not inherently offensive or prohibited in Islam. The author points to the depiction of Mohammed in several unflattering situations in some Christian churches in Europe, as well as an actual sculpture on the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., as evidence on this point.
Further, one must consider that Denmark has a long history of multi-cultural tolerance, and is famously remembered for maintaing solidarity with Jewish citizens during World War II. In addition, the newspaper had apologised, and for two months, no protests had been made.
In Jan 12, when 350 pilgrims were killed in Saudi Arabia, the outburst from the Muslim community intensified against the unnecessary 'tragedies' that occurred only because the government had (again) failed to keep its promises on security issues. Coincidentaly (or not so coincidentaly, according to the article), all four state-run Saudi newspapers began running articles that criticised the Danish cartoons.
A final fact that the author noticed: that the various rioters protesting the cartoons were waving Saudi flags.
While clearly Muslim sentiments have been negatively affected to such a huge degree only because of prevailing attitudes of hostility and suspicion against Muslims in the Western world, it is also interesting to consider how the force of that legitimate protest has been blunted and made to look ridiculous, fanatical and traditional. Do we go on reading the protests as an objection to the depiction of the Prophet Mohammed (something that may only concern a minority of the Muslim population, considering that it is not even universally agreed that it is a prohibition), or is it possible to read the violence of the protests as anger against a stereotyping of the Muslim by the Western world, something that every Muslim has to face and struggle with?

NEW YORK (AP) - Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on Monday blamed poor decision-making and "a certain level of incompetence" for the Department of Homeland Security's decision to slash the city's anti-terrorism funding.
But Giuliani, a Republican, said Monday he didn't believe political considerations had led to the 40 percent cut, announced last week, and said he was encouraged by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff's willingness to review the agency's decision.
"I think the decision was wrong from everything I know about it," Giuliani told The Associated Press. "You have to assume we are a big target, because terrorists want to hit a big target and kill a lot of people with spectacular effect."
Giuliani's performance as mayor after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center catapulted him to national prominence.
Giuliani said he would join Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other leaders to push for the money to be restored if they thought it helpful.
"I don't want to interfere," he said. "I just know from my days as mayor that what you don't need is to have people interfere."
The Department of Homeland Security said last week it planned to reduce New York's anti-terrorism allotment by $83 million from last year's $207 million, while boosting funding for smaller cities and rural areas.
Chertoff and Bloomberg spoke on the phone Monday, but the conversation appeared to leave little room for change on this year's round of funding, mayoral aides said.
Still, the mayor was encouraged to hear future grants to New York could increase after some of the smaller cities had their needs addressed, Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser said.
On Monday, Giuliani called Chertoff a "a good friend," noting that he had hired him as a federal prosecutor in the mid-1980s, when Giuliani was the U.S. attorney in Manhattan.
"If I were the mayor, I'd want a meeting with him," Giuliani said. "They've made a significant mistake, and they should restore the money."
A worksheet that helped determine funding levels said New York has no national monuments or icons to protect, an assessment that has led to bipartisan scorn.
But Chertoff has said that it's unfair to think New York icons such as the Statue of Liberty aren't high on the government's priorities. New York was in line for lower funding levels because it received such huge allotments from the government in the years immediately after Sept. 11, he said.
Giuliani on Monday called the agency's conclusion about monuments "odd" but said it was defensible to base a city's terror risk at least in part on its monuments.
"We've got the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the (New York) Stock Exchange," Giuliani argued. "They just incompetently evaluated their own criteria."
Giuliani dismissed concerns that New York had been penalized for being in a large, heavily Democratic state.
"I would have thought that, but the fact is, they cut funding from a lot of other places," Giuliani said. "Unless there's a master political strategy, they were not evaluating the ultimate result of the formulas they were using."
New Orleans, San Diego and Phoenix are among the cities slated for cuts.

described Ahmad Ghany, 21, as a Canada-born health sciences graduate of
McMaster University whose father, a physician, emigrated from Trinidad
and Tobago in 1955.
Lawyers and relatives of other suspects could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Another
imam, Aly Hindy, said he knew nine of the suspects and complained that
Canada's spy agency, CSIS, has unfairly targeted his mosque and
congregants for years.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (AP) - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police itself delivered three tons of potential bomb-making material to a group that authorities said wanted to launch a string of attacks inspired by al-Qaida, according to a news report Sunday.
The Toronto Star said the sting unfolded when investigators delivered the ammonium nitrate to the group of Muslim Canadians, then moved in quickly on what officials called a homegrown terror ring.
The newspaper said that investigators learned of the group's alleged plan to bomb targets around Ontario, then controlled the sale and transport of the fertilizer.
Authorities refused to discuss the Star's story and have revealed few details of the purported plot, or how the sting developed.
Police arrested 12 adults, ages 19 to 43, and five suspects younger than 18 Friday and Saturday on charges including plotting attacks with explosives on Canadian targets.
The oldest, Qayyum Abdul Jamal, led prayers at a storefront mosque attended by some 40 to 50 families down the street from his home in a middle-class neighborhood of Mississauga, west of Toronto.
Imam Qamrul Khanson said the language of Jamal's Friday night prayers had a more strident tone than other prayer leaders', but there was never any talk of terrorism or violence.
Khanson said at least three of the suspects regularly prayed at the Al-Rahman Islamic Center for Islamic Education.
"Here we always preach peace and moderation," Khanson said at the one-room mosque.

Officials said the operation involved some 400 intelligence and law-enforcement officers and was the largest counterterrorism operation in Canada since the adoption of Canada's Anti-Terrorism Act following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Citing an unnamed Canadian federal official, The Canadian Press reported that Web surfing and e-mail among the suspects led to the start of the probe in 2004.
"The Internet was, according to the police, was a very important part of their activities," Canada's ambassador to Washington, Michael Wilson, said in an interview on CNN's "Late Edition."
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the operation was "obviously a great success for the Canadians."

Police said the suspects, all citizens or residents of Canada, had trained together.
Cpl. Michele Paradis, a spokeswoman for the Mounties, said no more arrests were expected in coming days.
"Once we once analyze and sort through everything that was seized as a result there may be (more arrests)," she said. "At this point we are confident that we have the majority of people."
Rocco Galati, a lawyer for two of the men from Mississauga, said: "Both of their families are very well-established professionals, well-established families, no criminal pasts whatsoever.

His other client, Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, is an unmarried computer programmer who emigrated from Egypt at age 10 with his father, Galati said.
Two suspects, Mohammed Dirie, 22, and Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, already are in an Ontario prison serving two-year terms for possession of illegal weapons.
Neighbors said the oldest suspect, Jamal, was often home and did not seem to work regularly, although his wife drove a schoolbus. The couple has three small children, neighbors said.
Brazilian immigrant Jerry Tavares said Jamal was unfriendly and rarely spoke with neighbors.

Mike McDonnell, an assistant commissioner with the Mounties, said Saturday that the amount of ammonium nitrate acquired by the alleged terror cell was three times that used to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people and injuring more than 800.
The fertilizer is safe by itself, but when mixed with fuel oil or other ingredients, it makes a powerful explosive.
There was no indication that Canadian police altered the fertilizer to make it unusable in a bomb.
The FBI said the Canadian suspects might have had "limited contact" with two men recently arrested on terrorism charges in Georgia. There was no indication Sunday, however, that the 17 detainees were trying to plan an attack in the United States.

"They have been harassed by CSIS agents and this is what they come up with?" Hindy said. "I'm almost sure that most of these people will be freed."
Engineer Mohammed Abdelhaleen said he feared his son, Shareef, had already been convicted in the court of public opinion.
"He just goes and prays in a mosque," the father said. "That's all he does."
Muslim leaders voiced worries about a backlash.
A mosque in northwest Toronto was vandalized, with 25 windows and three doors smashed, police said.
Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, told The Associated Press that he and other Muslim leaders were getting threatening e-mails.

The secret is out. Two powerful intelligence gathering tools that the United States created to eavesdrop on Soviet leaders and to track KGB spies are now being used to monitor Americans. One system, known as Echelon, intercepts and analyzes telephone calls, faxes and e-mail sent to and from the United States. The other system, Tempest, can secretly read the displays on personal computers, cash registers and automatic teller machines, from as far as a half mile away. Although the inner workings of both systems remain classified, fueling exaggerated claims about their capabilities on Internet sites, credible detail has at last begun to emerge. It comes chiefly from foreign governments that began investigating American surveillance activities after discovering that the Echelon system had been used to spy on their defense contractors. No Such Agency Echelon is perhaps the best known and least understood spy tool. Although it is run by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), and paid for almost entirely by American taxpayers, it is a multinational spying effort that involves the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and, to a lesser degree, Italy and Turkey. It wasn't until 1957, five years after NSA was created, that the federal government would admit that it even existed. Simply put, the agency's job is to eavesdrop and share its notes. On a day-to-day basis, this means intercepting radio signals, unscrambling encrypted messages, and distributing the resulting information to a host of espionage organizations. Its chief "customer" is the Central Intelligence Agency. The intelligence gathering network that captures the electronic signals that NSA needs to do its work is popularly called Echelon. NSA does not use this term, and it is generally believed the word Echelon is part of a two-word code name for the space-based part of the system. Whatever the terminology, Echelon, like NSA itself, is the outgrowth of a World War II British-American intelligence sharing agreement. During the Cold War the United States and its allies began to eavesdrop on overseas phone calls in an effort to catch Soviet spies. This was done by intercepting the signals from the microwave relay stations that formed the backbone of long-distance telephone systems. When the telecommunications satellite industry took off, NSA followed it into space by building ground-based and orbiting listening posts, hence the need for participation by Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Turkey. Based on what isknown about the location of Echelon bases and satellites, it is estimated that there is a 90 percent chance that NSA is listening when you pick up the phone to place or answer an overseas call. In theory, but obviously not in practice, Echelon's supercomputers are so fast, they can identify Saddam Hussein by the sound of his voice the moment he begins speaking on the phone. The power to eavesdrop on specific individuals nearly proved to be NSA's undoing. A commission organized by President Gerald Ford discovered that Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon were unable to resist the temptation of using NSA to amass files on more than 7000 U.S. citizens and 1000 organizations, mostly those opposed to the Vietnam War. In 1975, Congress decided it had had enough, and created the Select Intelligence Committee to keep watch over NSA activities. With the Cold War over, and fearful of being embarrassed by revelations about Echelon's espionage excesses, high-ranking officials in Australia and New Zealand began going public with details. |

 Perhaps
one of the most serious problems facing Uzbekistan - a country of 24 million
people - is its growing prostitution rings inside as well as outside the
country. Uzbekistan, previously known to be a center and pillar of Islamic civilization throughout many centuries, has never before come face-to-face with such a crisis of general moral deterioration. Some ten to fifteen years ago, the term ‘Uzbek prostitutes’ was simply unheard of. However, today, after eleven years of dictatorial rule under the iron-fist of President Islam Karimov, Uzbek prostitutes are gaining "fame" inside and outside the country's borders. Uzbek prostitutes are shamefully seized on a daily basis in varied circumstances and places, including luxurious hotels throughout the United States, the beaches of Thailand and Turkey, and even nightclubs and restaurants in both India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Despite these developments, authorities in Uzbekistan apparently haven't taken any serious measures to fight this "epidemic". Moreover, the majority, if not all of the law enforcement officials are customers and pimps for many of these prostitution rings. Undoubtedly, the main reasons behind this phenomenon are both the high level of unemployment and poverty, which the battered economy has inflicted on the country (most Uzbeks get by on less than $30 a month while doctors and teachers make as little as $10). This is also largely the result of a Mafia dominated government that has not been able to set proper economic and social policies to transform and improve the country’s standards. Furthermore, central Asian countries in general, and Uzbekistan, in particular, do not have strict laws that prohibit women from selling their bodies. In some cases, families in that part of the world are forced to sell their children in order to survive the miserable economic conditions they are daily faced with. According to official statistics, Uzbekistan has one of the worst records for drug abuse and HIV penetration, as well as illegal human trade. Following the Soviet occupation at the end of the 19th century, central Asian nations have all deviated from their traditional Islamic values and rich heritage. Uzbekistan, not being an exception, had received many blows from the atheist and despotic Leninist regimes of that time that have led to radical cultural and social changes over the decades since Soviet rule. When President Islam Karimov announced Uzbekistan’s independence in 1991, he annihilated all opposition parties and launched an ethnic cleansing program against Muslims, killing hundreds of thousands and inflicting on them heavy losses. Media reports have recently focused on President Karimov's elder daughter, revealing the specifics of the relationship between the ruling family and her former husband - Mansour Maqsoudi. These reports have highlighted ‘shady’ dealings, which the Uzbek government and the President’s elder daughter - Gulnara Karimova, in particular - have committed. According to Farkhod Inoghomboev, the daughter's top-aide, who was only hired after the break-up in 2001 of her 10-year marriage to Maqsoudi, Gulnara Karimova stands entirely behind the Uzbek sex industry in the UAE. According to Farkhod, Gulnara's former representative in Dubai, “She has established many of her firms in the UAE, after controlling most industrial and tourism establishments in her own country. Among these firms is Unitrend Tourism, which was established in Dubai in 2003, with Gulnora’s Royal Holdings being the main shareholder.
