Girls & Riyadh

Today I was taking a break in front of my office building with my friend, and while we are talking we hared someone screaming, we looked there and found 2 girls without scarf on their heads “which is something unusual here in Riyadh” and with open “Abbayah” walking on the street and beside them a group of 4 guys riding Mercedes car and screaming with their numbers so the girls can take his number and call him later ” Targyeem”. Till now the situation is normal coz they always do that here, but the unusual thing is that they wear medicine uniform, so I were like “Dah :-o what the heck ?? … ” its kind of weird thing for me, coz they supposed to be educated ppl, not from the streets its really strange how they act here, shame on them.
But if we consider the environment they live in, I think we should excuse them for that coz it’s the only way to meet a girl, you threw your number and wait for the girl to talk to you, even if you don’t see anything from her except her feet .. :)
Taking me as example… I’ve been here since 2 years without any vacation except small one “6 days in Amman”, when I cam here in the first 4 months I was ignoring the girl who is walking without scarf, coz it was something usual for me and my friend who spent 1 year before me was telling me, hey look man there is a girl without scarf and I was like ” so.. what ?? ” but after 6 months I started to feel bad coz I didn’t see any girl, or talked to any.
After one year I started telling my friend hey man look there is a girl without scarf
So we look both to her … loll :) and the problem started to become bigger and bigger
Till I quit my job before 3 weeks so I don’t become part of the community here.
Coz one more year in Riyadh and I will get mad.
I’ am just counting days till I leave this city …

Well you know extremism is always a big problem. I mean many countries have veiled ladies, huge numbers, but you don’t feel the extremism, or the “kabt”. When you feel everything is prohibited, when you feel you’re watched all the time, you feel so not free and this makes you want to either break free by breaking the rules, or escape to a better place.
So you’ll be back to Jordan soon inshallah! that’s great, hope to meet you when I visit Jordan this time :)

  2. Roba 04.28.05 / 4pm

OC, hahaha, that post realllly cracked me up! YOu see, I spent a good 18 years of my life in Riyadh, and although I loved it, I honestly sympathize wholeheartedly with you now. Riyadh is just not the place for a bachelor! Yalla, as Eman said, you’ll be back to Jordan soon enough inshalla and an unvieled girl will become normal :)

lol OC, its not only about girls you know my two cousins tried their luck in the UAE (which is much better than the KSA i assume) and they couldn’t bear more than 1 year! its about the people in general, social life is zero and honestly, most of people here are sick. it took me 10 years to get used to it, actually i’m afraid i’ve become sick too. hope nobody is offended, i’m not generalizing but the majority fit it.

  4. IbrahimOwais 04.30.05 / 5pm

    Thanx all :)…
well, i believe that this country not for singles or for someone like me in his golden years :P
if i have wife i think i can survive in SA, but even that our life will be out of entertainment, there is nothing here to do. some will say no its cool life here for families, well yeah in a closed place like compound, sorry to tell you thats not true, coz i feel myself like am in prison, and when i go out with my wife … everybody will start looking through window to see my wife face … also she will not be able to alone for shoping .. she will not do anything … so i think this is a hoples country and i dont like it …

  5. mira 05.01.05 / 11am

Well obviously I dont wanna live there :P

  6. IbrahimOwais 05.01.05 / 12pm

lol, Mira :D … dont even think of it … :D

  7. Linda 05.01.05 / 10pm

Wow, that was a very interesting post. It makes me appreciate the freedoms I have living in the U.S., really it does. but am wondering is there any laws in this city that prohibit women from showing their faces in public? I mean do they have to wear a head scarf and cover up, or is it optional?
by the way, i am enjoying reading your blog.

It’s a shame that Arabs have to explain themselves to one another. You don’t come from too far off… and I’m sure that there are even some Southern Jordanian areas that have the same customs and traditions.(because many Northern Arabian tribes are now considered Jordanian..and 6abay3hum hea nafsaha)

What is needed, is tolerance. Never judge a country’s level, educationally, by the actions of a mere few. Anyhow, we still are all Arabs. It saddens me to see posts like this. It really, really, really does. Especially seeing as how Saudi, though may seem miserable to some, has blessed us and even expatriates with so many things (things I bet you wouldn’t get from anywhere else…) I’m not patriotic. Al-Saud mean NOTHING to me. It just saddens me to see people I consider brothers and sisters overlook the pros and focus on the cons. (and we all know that ALL countries are flawed) wallahi wallahi 3aib. :-( I5wan e7na…

Hope you see your homeland soon, I even miss it here when I’m abroad, so I know what you mean :-)

  9. WickedAmigo 05.03.05 / 1pm

Umm.. I dun really where to start from .. actually i liked this post which i was refred to via a close friend and this pretty much my first and i think would be the only post :) .. Anyhow i read the sympathetic post of Farooha which i gree with in many points but i don’t really see any shame in posting such a subject as much as it’s shame on those guys (the future to come doctors) who were shouting there mobiles numbers. I don’t say all the Saudi population is the same or they are different than many other arabs because at the end all extremes happen whether in Jordan, Egypt, UAE or KSA but the biggest difference above all is that MANY CONTRADICTIONS happen in KSA. i dun say u cant try to hook up with a girl but at least act in a good way to grap her attention if she were interested wallllahy she will respond no matter what the situation is if she is not then the heck with it and leaave her alone … but in many cases this never happens - and my point here is about how guys are acting in really ugly ways to grap attention and yeraggemo- so u dont see this in jedda or in shargiya (which are other parts in KSA other than riyadh) cause in these regions even saudis are more educated (moraly speaking) but when u come to riyadh they might be well educated but not morally they are not. imagine if that guy who was shouting if he took the time to get off his fansy car and got into the shop were that gurl was getting in and then expressed his crush by paying her bill or even by saying how much that out fit she were trying to buy would look like or askin about her taste in something he wanna buy for his sister ,, the gurl might respond posetively or negatively but at least taht was a polit way not treatin a gurl or a lady as a sheep throwin her a number or showtin it from his car while she was walkin :S :S … im not jordanian and lived in saudi arabia which is ma homeland for all my live 25 years .. part of it in Jeddah and my career now frced me to stay in Riyadh (except for my college years which was in Cyprus) so it really hurts seeing such bad examples who would easily market for negative pictures and ideas about the Saudi youngmen and youngurlz specially the new generation whcih i really think and believe that would have a major breakthrough educationally, acdamically and all other fields but we should know how to raise the level of morality specially for those who are so ignorant and pride to see other wise .. :) i feel as i’m lecturing here . .sorry anyhow :) but my point was that i really hate the ignorant and pride guys and gurls who give ugly images about SAudis cause they should know better ,, and these things happen everywhere :) so don’t act as if Jordan or UAE is heaven on GOD’s land cause even you know that i’m right for example when i went for my college i first went to JOrdan and i really couldnt stand it and left ther though i was accepted on two major universities (ALjam3al Al2ordoniay and IRbid Science & TEchnology University) but i really couldnt though i made eally good friends (boys and gursl in Amman and Irbid) then went to Cyprus where i continued my study and got my BAchelor .. MERcy Jeddan for this post and i hope i haven’t booerd ya all here ;) PEace and hope you get a better live wherever you are :) .. WickedAmigo

    THAT”S BAAD DUDE :D

  11. sam 06.21.05 / 1am

well, if u didnt like it in ksa why r u still here??? why did u come at the first place? is it for a better job, maybe money, ya probably. its realy strange but most arabs living in ksa keep talking about there countries bla bla its normal to love ur country but the question is why did u leave it if its that great??????? and the problem they live the rest of their lives in ksa get married, have children, work…etc i really dont understand!!!! and oh u r talking about riyadh and the picture u got is from jeddah!!!! its in (dorat al aroos) by the way most girls there doesnt were abaya or tarha, and most swims with their bikinis, i dont know if u have ever went to jeddah but the photo u have is there?!?!? only 1% of jeddah people covers if u know! they say its hard to live in riyadh but its getting better, so u cant judge a big country like ksa from visiting only one city!!!!! and its optional no one is going to make u cover, for the person who asked.

  12. sam 06.21.05 / 1am

one more thing, i think the most important thing in any country is that all citizens are happy, well saudi people are happy with their lives for example here in jeddah to me as a girl, my family is openminded (like most people in jeddah) so i dont have to worry about the cover, a fancy car with the driver 24 houres to take me where ever i want, a made to help me in shopping, hanging out with my friends at cafes, the beach, malls anywhere else, and anything i ask for is done in seconds, what else do u think we need???? its important that saudies are happy in their country NOT others (sorry i dont want to be rude) but maybe u would feel better if u stayed in ur country with ur family and friends. p.s/ the upper class in ksa are living in heaven, if u know what i mean).why should we care about what other people thinks??? just leave to where u came from, u know saudi started to be croweded with arabs from everywhere, some have to leave and i prefer the ones who are not happy, others are welcome!!!

  13. IbrahimOwais 06.21.05 / 8am

    sam,
first thanks for passing by my blog.
i want to clear somthing here i didnt say that i dont like KSA, also i didnt take this photo, this photo is from another site for editors so when they write about girls in sa they attach this photo to it … and i didnt know that its in jeddah the photo only describe the post title…

i really appreciate your defense of your country and the love you have for, coz everybody love his country we dont have any problem with this point.
but my point were about the life here and how its too closed, maybe for you as a girl you dont see that …
i used to live in the east side of KSA in Al-khobar for 14 years before …
and i really love this place i love it from all of my heart i raised there and i visited jeddah lots of times, but here in riyadh the situation is diffrenet everything is diffrenet and you know that since you are from jeddah …
i dont say its very bad city no there is lots of advantages in this city and most of advantages for business life … this city only for business and work and money
and thats why i still here in riyadh coz yes i need money and for better job … i can have good job in jordan but i cant have this experince that exist in this market …
and for your information i can leave anytime i want but i dont want to leave coz i want to enter this market and its the only way to be big in this kind of markets whihch is advrtising … its very big here in SA…
and managed by non-saudies ppl … who want the best for thier arabworld …
i will say it again for you too, i’ am not anti-sauid or somthing, i love saudi arabia and i support everybody for the best i need the best for this country the best for arabworld … but most of pepole here just take it personal and they have closed minds and i want to stay here to open those minds …

anyway i will write another subject about this issue hope you get back here and read it so you can understand my point of view …

  14. sam 06.25.05 / 11pm

hi, well thanx for clearing that up but u might not notice that u made ksa sounds like hill which is not true, and ya i know its different in riyadh than in jeddah and personly i wouldnt think of living there no matter what but still its a part of my country which i love (i think u noticed that) sooo i think u got my point, didnt u?and about being a girl and maybe that why i dont notice that, man u r so wrong!!! guys can do what ever here, they have even more freedom, come on!!!and hey u said u r working in an add. company, well i am studying graphic design and next year the first class will be graduated , i say wait for 3 years till my class and i graduate and u will hear about ADD BUSSNISS IN JEDDAH growing boooooom am i so confident???? loooooooool

    alhamdulelah,,
ksa is the best country in the world bcz its traditional it is not traditional to be accurate it is ISLAM,, and islam gave the womens thair properties befor any one did,, but for some tribalism traditional (not in saudia ara. only) from some people thy make the womens like thair servant and the western media focus at ksa espicially to make our country looks like prison…7asby allah wane3m alwakeel (tehoz jebal)
