Who is Eros ?

Let's see !

Eros, the Greek god of love and sexual desire (the word eros, which is found in the Iliad by Homer, is a common noun meaning sexual desire). He was also worshiped as a fertility god, believed to be a contemporary of the primeval Chaos, which makes Eros one of the oldest gods. In the Dionysian Mysteries Eros is referred to as "protagonus", the first born. But there are many variations to whom the parents of Eros really where. According to Aristophanes (Birds) he was born from Erebus and Nyx (Night); in later mythology Eros is the offspring of Aphrodite and Ares. Yet in the Theogony, the epic poem written by Hesiod, it mentions a typified Eros as being an attendant of Aphrodite, but not her son. Another legend says that he was the son of Iris and Zephyrus.

From the early legend of Eros it is said that he was responsible for the embraces of Uranus (Heaven or Sky) and Gaia (Earth), and from their union were born many offspring. It was also written that Eros hatched our race and made it appear first into the light (Birds, by Aristophanes). Although one of the oldest gods, he was a latecomer to Greek religion. He was worshiped in many regions of Greece, at Thespiae there was an ancient fertility cult, and in Athens he and Aphrodite had a joint cult. Also in Athens the forth day of every month was sacred to Eros. Sometimes Eros was worshiped by the name Erotes (which is the plural of Eros); this personified all the attractions that evoked love and desire, this included heterosexual and homosexual allurements. Anteros (the Returner of Love also known as the god of Mutual Love) was the brother of Eros, which comes from the version of which Aphrodite and Ares are said to be the mother and father of Eros.

Eros is usually depicted as a young winged boy, with his bow and arrows at the ready, to either shoot into the hearts of gods or mortals which would rouse them to desire. His arrows came in two types: golden with dove feathers which aroused love, or leaden arrows which had owl feathers that caused indifference. Sappho the poet summarized Eros as being bitter sweet, and cruel to his victims, yet he was also charming and very beautiful. Being unscrupulous, and a danger to those around him, Eros would make as much mischief as he possibly could by wounding the hearts of all, but according to one legend he himself fell in love. This legend tells us that Eros was always at his mothers side assisting her in all her conniving and godly affairs. The legend goes on to say that Aphrodite became jealous of the beauty of a mortal, a beautiful young woman named Psyche. In her fit of jealousy Aphrodite asked Eros to shoot his arrow into the heart of Psyche and make her fall in love with the ugliest man on earth. He agreed to carry out his mothers wishes, but on seeing her beauty Eros fell deeply in love with Psyche himself. He would visit her every night, but he made himself invisible by telling Psyche not to light her chamber. Psyche fell in love with Eros even though she could not see him, until one night curiosity overcame her. She concealed a lamp and while Eros slept she lit the lamp, revealing the identity of Eros. But a drop of hot oil spilt from the lamp awakening the god. Angered she had seen him Eros fled and the distraught Psyche roamed the earth trying in vain to find her lover. In the end Zeus took pity and reunited them, he also gave his consent for them to marry. There are variations of this legend but most have the same outcome.

The Romans borrowed Eros from the Greeks and named him Cupid (Latin cupido meaning desire). Eros has been depicted in art in many ways. The Romans regarded him as a symbol of life after death and decorated sarcophagi with his image. The Greeks regarded him as most beautiful and hansom, the most loved and the most loving. They placed statues of him in gymnasiums (as most athletes were thought to be beautiful). He was depicted on every form of utensil, from drinking vessels to oil flasks, usually showing him ready to fire an arrow into the heart of an unsuspecting victim.

God loves those cheerful givers indeed

Give as much as you can afford to give

In the ways that enable you to live

For the love we gave away yesterday

Is the only love we keep till today

Hold out your friendly hearts

Help all those needy cited in charts

Be the living expression of God’s giving

Spread love wherever you’re going

Let giving be coming out from your mouth

Let it be taught to the residents of your house

Give and be sure that it will be given back to us

Bring gaiety to others without making fuss

When you give you bring sunshine to the heartbroken

Thus you can not keep it from themselves even as a token

Blessed are those who give without remembering

Blessed are those who take without forgetting

Beware of letting goodness die inside you

Proclaim your joy by rendering others joy too

Be grateful for every moment of your miraculous life

Enjoy optimism, positive thinking and giving with rife

Remember ! Those who dared give nothing

Are left with less than nothing

Take your sincere decision to be positive

Only with giving you cease to be negative

Fill your heart and lungs with love to give

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and
got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.)

She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ - had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed an getting to the patient
within 3 hours which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.

2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . .. It is sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the
general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Enjoy reading this short story !

It was a hot night and most of the girls were sweating in their beds . When lights were out , all the girls went flat in their bunks trying to sleep after a heavy goodbye dinner in the school canteen . Some of the girls kept talking to each other, some preferred to keep silent , others relaxed and started remembering some past events . For a while, I kept turning my head on the pillow sometime for the right and mostly to the left ; simply because I heard Jane, a friend of mine who sleeps on the opposite bunk telling Maggie about her nipples and how they are growing bigger every time she turns them round and round . After the elapse of an hour or so all the girls were asleep but me . I kept thinking of tomorrow and how all the girls will leave Brambly Boarding School because the summer vacation will start and all teachers and students will leave the school for a month and a half . The snoring of some girls made me feel distracted for a while; so I convinced myself that sleeping is better than thinking .

“Wake up pussycat ! It’s almost seven . Come on Cathy ! All girls are finely dressed and looking so pretty and tidy . Get up you miserable cat !

I woke up this morning

My Early Morning Walk

Max is a symmetrical, powerful and active dog. He is renowned for its reliable temperament. He has always displayed a kindly expression and possessed a personality that is eager, alert and self-confident .

My Early Morning Walk

I have just returned from my morning walk along the quiet waters of Lake Ontario . I am really enjoying walking there . It's really a good opportunity to enjoy smelling the reviving breezes of the morning fresh air, watching various kinds of birds singing and flying happily, gazing at the colourful fallen leaves of the trees and meeting almost the same people and the same dogs too on my daily way there .

Today, I, unexpectedly, felt a little bit tired, so I sat on one of those grey metal benches right by the lake. While staring at the waters of the lake moving up and down in such a harmonious way, a group of mermaids appeared to say good morning to me . Guess who were they ? I bet some of you know by now . Yes, you're right ! Our ladies at 50plus. So, we had a nice chit chat and planned for a gig by the end of next week before Halloween .

The nice chat was suddenly interrupted when Max, my handsome he-dog met his old gal, Tara who suddenly appeared from nowhere and started to tease Max with her girlish swaying while she walking towards us with the company of an old friend of mine . Tara looked gorgeous this early morning . As soon as my friend sat down to say hi to me , Max approached her with caution and tenderness .

"Hi Tara! Long time , no see . Where were you? " " Well, Max, you see, I'm so busy these days. I have just finished acting my last shots for my new movie and tomorrow I'm flying to Paris to market my new perfume. Next week, I have to open my new department store in the Fiji Islands and before the end of the October..."

" Aren't you going to attend our annual gorgeous Halloween party ?" " I'm sure you hate miss it."

" Max ! I'll do my best to show up . In the meantime, I would like to tell ya something in your ear .Come closer ! "

" What an adorable smell ! Tara ! You have ... give me a hug ... a kiss..." " Oh ! max ! Behave ! People are ... " " Care a damn about people now." " Let me .. "

" Sam ! Your dog ! Keep you dog away from my Tara," said my friend .

" Sorry ! Max ! Be a good by ! No more of that stuff, buy ! Tara has become a big star and you're nothing but ..."

" I know the rest !" " Let's go back home !"

"OK Max! Let's go !"

On the way back home, Max told me that he has grown old and that he is planning to retire . I told him that aging is a natural process and that we can't control it at all . Max felt blue so we stopped at Tim's and had our morning drink . Then I told him this : Max ! You feel old if you sit in a rocking chair and can't get it to go . Remember ! Stairs are much steeper than they used to be and they're using smaller print in the papers . Your back goes out more than you do . You are very proud of your lawn mower .Your arms are almost too short to read the newspaper . You enjoy hearing about other people's operations . You can wear black socks with sandals . Your little black book only contains names ending in M.D. You're asleep but others worry that you may have died . The end of your tie doesn't come anywhere near the top of your pants . You know all the answers....but no one asks any questions . You look forward to a dull evening . Your knees buckle but your belt doesn't . You sink your teeth into a steak.. and they stay there . You meet an old friend who has aged so much he doesn't recognize you....and, finally... You decide to procrastinate but never get around to it.

Max barked expressing his disappointment and unhappiness . He entered the house feeling let down . He sat down next to me , closed its sad eyes and went to sleep .

Max

I had such a glorious morning by the lake
Max insisted upon going there for her sake

But Tara was late, so Max got worried
Did my best to have his fears burried

When he lost all hopes
He decided to pull the ropes

So we moved slowly with a turn back look
Expecting Tara to show up at a nook

Alas! She wasn't there so we carried on walking
Till we reached another park where ladies strolling

We sat on a big rock
To cheer him up, I throw a buck

Max ran like thunder and brought it back
He sat , barked and felt sad to such a lack

As we decided to hit the road
Tara arrived with a big load

She brought Max a gift
Just to fill the rift

Within seconds , Max was soon
Over the moon

He gave her a hot hug
Promised not to bug

They had a nice time together
While I was chatting to Heather

Now Max is sound asleep
He's dreaming of tomorrow's peep
