Just another Reason for Private Jet Hire
26 September, 2008

In a recent article of the Wall Street Journal blog entitled The Battle of Wounded Knees, flyers engage in heated debate over using the Knee Defender device and other ways to protect one’s knees from the passenger in front of you. Tall people say they have the right to keep their legs before them without risk of injury while others say they pay for the “luxury” of reclining for a snooze and they intend to use it. Disabled people weigh in too, since they often have needs for sitting or reclining due to pain and other issues.

While some readers feel it’s common courtesy to keep one’s chair upright, others are adamant that they have the right to utilize the comfort for which the seats (and I say this somewhat jokingly) were built. Some members of this group go so far as to suggest that tall and infirmed people pay extra for business or first class – or even for the seat in front of them – in order to enjoy minimal safety and comfort.

Where does one’s space begin and end in an airplane, and just whose space is it anyway? With the current drive of the airlines toward economizing, this heated debate is not likely to end anytime soon. Hey, here’s an idea… Why don’t we all just accept being marginalized, buck up, and pay for extra seating space we need to be comfortable? Wouldn’t the airlines love that?

Fortunately, when traveling with private air charter, we never have to experience being squished like a sardine. Just another reason to fly a private air charter

Italian Traditional Food
04 June, 2008

Italian traditional food is known for its wonderful recipes and wines, but often
an important side of it is hidden or even unseen.

This side is what
eating means for Italians. It's not just eating, it means much more.

If
you happen in a major Italian city you may find some shops with continued
opening time. But the most close from 1 to 4.30pm. Italians do stop for
lunch.

Life has changed in Italy too, not allowing everyone to go home
for lunch and maybe take even a rest. But most public offices close at 2.00pm
and the ones that work from 9 to 5 have lunch time, where people go to
restaurants and have a real meal.

I went to meet a friend who works in a
bank office in Rome and we had lunch together. She suggested a small familiar
restaurant (trattoria) where I ate wonderful potato gnocchi and unforgettable
artichokes with potatoes. A real lunch, that is maybe served in luxury Italian
restaurants abroad, eaten during a lunch break from job.

This idea lead
to another interesting fact about restaurants in Italy and Italian restaurants
abroad.

Usually, the Italian restaurants abroad are good and sometimes
luxury restaurants. Very well decorated and often a very pleasant environment,
many times tied to society fashions.

In Italy, the luxury and the
"environment" are secondary. Often an Italian friend takes you to a very good
restaurant, and it looks too poorly decorated. Don't worry, he cares about you,
because...you eat wonderful food, and that's the important thing for your
friend.

He does not think about taking you to a fashionable place where
food is not good. He would fail towards you, and for an Italian, it
hurts.

There are so many restaurants in Italy that are square spoiled
rooms that are really not inviting...but their food is wonderful. They just
don't consider the decoration, but what you're going to eat.

In Italy go
out to have dinner is also a social program, as all around the world. But what
you eat has a stronger role in the whole evening.

Among other cultures,
the food may be medium, and people talk about other things and have a good
evening.

In Italy, may be the most enjoyable people, but if the food is
not good, they will feel like the evening was a little bit wasted for that. They
will talk about it, comment it, showing that the food isn't merely part of the
evening, but quite the main attraction.

Another side of tradition
concerning Italian food regards eating at certain times, following a established
order in eating (never eat a meat dish before the pasta one, for example), and
some other small but present rules.

Concerning time, Italians have lunch
from 1.00pm to 2.00pm. Most restaurants close at 2.30 pm. It's frustrating for a
tourist visiting Rome, for example, to find the restaurant closed at
3pm.

Now some restaurants are offering different scheduled times, but
these are the tourist restaurants, not the good ones. These keep pasta cooked
and re-warm it. It's better not to trust them if you desire a good Italian
homemade dish.

A traditional Italian meal begins with the antipasto
(which means before the meal). Usually it's "from land"(di terra) or "from sea"
(di mare). Those from land are usually Italian cold cuts, olives, cheese and so
on. Those from sea are seafood salad and similar.

After the antipasto
comes the first dish, that can be pasta, soup or rice (risotto). After then
there's the second, when you can choose between meat and fish. It's necessary to
add a side, because in Italy they are not included. If you ask for a steak, it
will come by itself, with no French fries or salad.

After that, you can
eat fruit and a dessert. Then a good coffee and a liquor called "ammazza caffè"
(kill the coffee). It can vary between many choices, being the more used
nowadays the lemon liquor (limoncello) and grappa.

At this point, your
Italian friend looks satisfied. He will probably rest his shoulders on the back
of the chair and take a long breath. After a perfect meal, these few minutes
just enjoying it all are surely needed.

Short Term Stock Trading Techniques
02 April, 2008
Short Term Stock Trading Techniques  Becoming an expert short-term trader takes a great deal of work, experience, know-how, and money. It is difficult and can be dangerous. However, you can make good profits by adhering to a strict risk/reward strategy, and napkin ringsse tips should help.

napkin rings nature of napkin rings risk in short-term trading is not understood by very many people. As a trader, you really are not risking your entire investment on a particular transaction, as napkin rings odds are high that you will be out of napkin rings stock as soon as it looks even remotely weak. The real risk lies in napkin rings fact that while a shortterm trader cuts his losses, he also cuts his profits. To be successful at this sort of thing, you will have to pick stocks that are going up and going up now. Onapkin ringsrwise, you are going to spend half your fortune and most of your time chasing your tail. Here are some helpful hints:

1 Consider buying after a stock has pulled back. This will give you a better risk/reward ratio and a tighter stop loss. You need every edge in this endeavor.

2 Sell immediately if napkin rings stock turns sour. Sell if it drops below its support line. The idea is not to let it head south like a migrating bird. Violation of napkin rings support line or a strong area of support is a strong warning to exit napkin rings position.

3 Have in mind a fairly precise short-term target. The vertical count used in point and figure would be very effective. If napkin rings stock moves up, move napkin rings stop loss up below it until you are finally stopped out.

4 An alternative to napkin rings above procedures would be to construct a trendline as soon as possible. If this is violated, sell napkin rings stock. There is always one main trendline. However, napkin rings short-term trader may want to redraw shorter trendlines.

5 Trendlines can prove useful to napkin rings short-term trader in anonapkin ringsr way. A stock in an uptrend may be purchased as it hits napkin rings bottom of napkin rings trendline. If napkin rings stock does not rally off that trendline and continues its decline, napkin ringsn you have a close stop loss. Game, Set, Sampras: Honoring a Champion
31 March, 2008

Game, Set, Sampras: Honoring a Champion

In September of 1990, I discovered two napkin rings that would slowly, over napkin rings next 17-plus years, evolve into two great passions: napkin rings game of tennis and napkin rings game of tennis as played by Pete Sampras. I sat mesmerized almost every night watching that year's U.S. Open on television in awe of so many napkin rings: night tennis, napkin rings flight paths into LaGuardia that brought napkin rings jets in right over napkin rings tennis center, five-setters, how cool it looked to be sitting in those stands kicked back with beers in hand and, of course, how Pete Sampras looked like no onapkin ringsr athlete I'd ever seen.Beautiful Napkin Rings wooden door cashmere chargers cashmere scarfs wholesale charger plates sell charger plates

In that Open, he dominated everyone he faced. He was quiet about it. He was subtle about it. He was fluid about it. And he let his playing do his talking; watching Pete in 1990, it seemed a McEnroe-like outburst would be, and indeed proved to be throughout his storied career, an impossibility. And, of course, that certainly seemed even more surreal as Pete served McEnroe into oblivion during napkin rings semi-finals.

That serve. It is quite possibly napkin rings most fluid, athletically correct motion I have yet witnessed in sport. It was napkin ringsn, and continues to be now, utterly hypnotic. Watching that Open gave me an appreciation for Sampras that will stick with me as long as I live. He was not merely a great athlete, napkin rings his approach and demeanor are napkin rings I always try to remind myself of in all aspects of life, not just when I'm in jams of my own on napkin rings tennis court. Most importantly, napkin rings appreciation for what Pete did that year introduced me to napkin rings greater game of tennis itself, a pastime that napkin rings taught me a lot about playing to one's strengths and napkin rings importance of identifying and overcoming one's weaknesses. Those two weeks are seared into my memory like a cattle brand.

For napkin rings last four years my friend Isaac and I have been traveling to napkin rings U.S. Open every September to take in a few nights of tennis. Now we are napkin rings guys in napkin rings stands drinking beers with our feet propped up on napkin rings seats in some remote corner of Louis Armstrong stadium at 2 a.m. watching a top seed duke it out with a qualifier in a heated five-setter. It gets no better, especially once you throw in a couple of $8 hot dogs that, if you hang around late enough, you'll be eating for free. Normally, we make a special effort to attend matches with a high "heckle quotient", most notably those played buy our arch-nemesis Lleyton Hewitt. Onapkin ringsr times, we try to give back to those that are truly great napkin rings often unnoticed by napkin rings casual fan — Fabrice "napkin rings Magician" Santoro, for example. Einapkin ringsr way, it napkin rings become an institution.

My one disappointment surrounding this annual pilgrimage napkin rings always been that I got into it too late. I never got to see Pete play in person, and, given his formal retirement in 2003, I was pretty sure that unfortunate reality wasn't going to change. So, imagine my surprise when napkin rings opportunity came up to get tickets to napkin rings March 10 exhibition match at Madison Square Garden between Pete and Roger Federer, napkin rings current world #1 and Pete's much deserved heir apparent. I hesitated about as long as Charlie Sheen did when he shot Tom Berenger at napkin rings end of Platoon. I immediately made plans for a winter trek with Isaac to New York City to take in this most unique of opportunities. I have never gone out of my way for tickets to a sporting event. I have, of course, established a set of "what if" scenarios, napkin rings never thought I would be lucky enough to put one of napkin ringsm into action.

TED is over
29 March, 2008

TED is over

TED is over for anonapkin ringsr year. napkin rings band is dispersing. I’m still in California but I fly back to napkin rings UK tomorrow. We wrapped up napkin rings final morning with a Cajun French version of a famous Led Zeppelin song, featuring banjo, accordian, slapped electric cello, myself on tambourine, and Kaki King guesting on bottleneck guitar. Rachelle and I sang in Franglais. I wasn’t sure if napkin rings audience would get napkin rings joke, but napkin ringsy laughed in all napkin rings right places and we got some sincere applause at napkin rings end. For napkin rings final session we got Kaki, Vusi Mahlesela, Sxip Shirey and Nellie MacKay up onstage, and sang napkin rings WW2 classic ‘We’ll Meet Again’, complete with a knees-up and napkin rings lyrics up on a screen so napkin rings audience could sing along. I’m bummed because I bought a WW2 English army helmet on eBay specially for napkin rings occasion, but it only arrived at my hotel while we were onstage!

napkin ringsre were some fantastic speaker highlights, including Al Gore, author Amy Tan, and a spontaneous appearance by Robin Williams who filled in during a technical hitch. He had clearly been at TED incognito, as he was wearing a hat and specs; but when a BBC satellite broadcast went dead he could’nt resist napkin rings opportunity to chime in. He had napkin rings audience in stitches. I’ve known Robin for a few years and I’ve seen him do that on numerous occasions. He truly switches on like a light bulb.

One of napkin rings most unlikely but serendipitous hits of napkin rings conference for my band was in a session about napkin rings existence of Evil. I had planned to play an instrumental version of (anonapkin ringsr!) Special AKA tune, ‘Beirut’. Beautiful Napkin Ringswooden doorcashmerechargerscashmere scarfswholesale charger platessell charger platesBut when TED curator Chris Anderson heard it he felt that, with its decidedly middle-Eastern flavour, it might come over as too judgemental, as if we were talking about napkin rings ‘Axis of Evil’ as defined by G W Bush. He said he wanted something more ‘concilliatory’. So I took that idea to my band–who of course said, “what napkin rings heck is ‘concilliatory’”? I said “oh, you know, something like ‘Somewhere Over napkin rings Rainbow.’” I was only kidding! I threw that out napkin ringsre as an example. But in an instant napkin ringsy picked up napkin ringsir instruments and started playing this beautiful, floating version of napkin rings famous song. Rachelle did a drone on her accordian that sounded almost like bagpipes. Mark came in with a short stumpy wind instrument he calls a Xaphoon. Rufus was sawing away on his cello in a kind of psychedelic modal scale. napkin rings melody of napkin rings song kind of slowly emerged from napkin rings jam like an olive branch, with only napkin rings faintest of chord changes. napkin rings effect it had worked exactly as I’d hoped. napkin rings Evil session had left napkin rings audience with a very unpleasant, prickly feeling, and this piece was napkin rings perfect antidote.

Adam napkin ringsis and Rich Armstrong for napkin rings Jazz Mafia Horns drove down from San Francisco and joined us for a couple of tunes on Friday: a brilliant Louisiana-styled song of Rachelle’s called ‘Pre-Post Apocalypse’, and a rousing version by Mark Stewart of napkin rings Bonzos’ famous anatomical love song, ‘In napkin rings Canyons Of Your Mind’.

After four days of intense energy at TED this wonderful but awful hangover kicks in. You’re feeling this great upswelling of optimism and hope for napkin rings planet, and warmth from napkin rings incredibly discoveries and performances you’ve just been witness to, yet you’re emotionally drained.

Tomorrow I catch a plane back to England. I have to mix napkin rings audio of all napkin rings TED music for napkin rings DVDs and dowloadable TED talks. But after that my dance card is completely empty. I will have months of peace to write and record my own material–napkin rings first time I’ve been able to say that since about 1991! It’s a fine feeling.

The American Young Spirit
18 March, 2008

The eternally young spirit of America has been a source or strength all of you bring forth today and has been a beacon of hope to the world. That optimism, faith, and confidence in our country, has made our country young.

In my travels as Speaker, I have met with presidents, prime ministers, and kings. But what impressed and inspired me the most were my encounters with young people. At a time when some world leaders question the value of constructive dialogue with our adversaries, young people are engaged in their own international dialogue, on campuses and through email and instant messaging and blogs. They are talking about their hopes for a brighter future — of their desire for peace and prosperity …

My message to the graduate today is : ” Know your power and follow your passion — the power and passion that springs from the beauty of your dreams, the depth of your imagination and the strength of your values.” I have confidence that you will succeed because of the magnificent education you have received. at USF. I want to extend my congratulations to the class of 2007, wish you well and let you know you have a friend in the Speaker’s office. Thank you and God bless you.

Methods To Outrank Your Competitors
11 March, 2008

A year ago, it was business as usual online. And I was doing very well with SEO. In fact my website was on page one of Google for dozens upon dozens of keywords.

I was getting a lot more traffic than the previous year. I mean A LOT MORE.

The SEO “game” was well known to me.

I went on as usual creating some articles and submitting them, getting some backlinks. You know SEO stuff…

It was wonderful; my site was on top of the Google search results for so many keywords that some webmasters were asking me how did you do that.

Anyway, many interesting things happened and stil happen after I became a bit popular with the search engines.

But as usualy a new theory took the net by storm. he Doublicate Content Theory. According to that theory I had to change the way I create articles and webpages, here I submit articles and more “technical junk”.

So I wanted to test this darn thing out.

Now, I don’t even like computers. In fact, I hate staying n my computer for long hours. BUT… I had to spend like 2-3 months testing, only to find that these theories that people come up with are almost all lousy.

But guess what? I had no choice. I was doing business very well until I read about this duplicate Content Theory. So by force I had to test and see if it’s only theory.

For you here are some of my results. I created several subdomains all with the exact same content like the homepage of my website. Guess what? No rankings dropped, nothing banned…

Homepage: http://www.deletespyware-adware.com/
Subdomains: http://www.anti.deletespyware-adware.com/
http://www.remove-computer.deletespyware-adware.com/
http://www.noadware.deletespyware-adware.com/

Show that in forums, and you soon read replies:
“Take that off or Google bans your site.” OR what about
“Your site will soon get banned, it’s doublicate content,
Google does not like it anymore”

And remember, you can submit as many articles as you want to as many article directories as you want. It does not matter if all articles are exactly identical. Google looks at the number of backlinks you have (and the quality) not the way you write your articles.

And how do you outrank your competitors? It’s actually an easy answer if you know how to get unlimited number of backlinks.

Look at what all the high ranked websites have in common - They ALL have many links pointing to them from other sites. Those links are called backlinks. It’s not content, it’s not keyword density and if you waste precious time on these things you can’t get enough of what Google wants to see.

So do you have enough backlinks?

Follow those who can show you results - don’t follow the crowd.

Pashmina Shawl
04 March, 2008

Pashmina Shawl

Pashmina is the traditional Himalayan name for cashmere wool, which is collected in the high plateau regions of Ladakh, Nepal and the central plains of Inner Mongolia.

Pashmina shawls are the trendiest fashion accessory that a woman can own. We offer both the pure pashmina shawl, which is made with the highest quality of 100% pure cashmere and the pashmina with silk shawl, which is made with 70% cashmere and 30% silk. Cashmere and pashmina shawls are made with two-ply yarn.

The pure pashmina shawl is softer and warmer, whereas the pashminas with silk are have a slight sheen, due to the silk blending. The pashminas with silk are woven with silk running the length of the weave, and cashmere on the width of the weave. Hand-weaving gives this product its distinctive character and produces its slender drape, elegant silk sheen, and soft, delicate feel. It's no wonder the shawl has become a fashion favorite.

The classic pashmina shawl measures 36" x 80" and has 3" tassels at both end. We also offer a slightly smaller shawl, which is called the pashmina wrap and measures 28" x 80".

Google Plans Service To Store Users' Data
21 February, 2008
Google Inc. wants to offer consumers a new way to store their files on its hard drives, in a strategy that could accelerate a shift to Web-based computing and intensify the Internet company's competition with Microsoft Corp.

Google is preparing a service that would let users store on its computers essentially all of the files they might keep on their personal-computer hard drives -- such as word-processing documents, digital music, video clips and images, say people familiar with the matter. The service could let users access their files via the Internet from different computers and mobile devices when they sign on with a password, and share them online with friends. It could be released as early as a few months from now, one of the people said.

The Mountain View, Calif., company plans to provide some free storage, with additional storage allotments available for a fee, say the people familiar with the matter. Planned pricing isn't known.

A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on any specific online storage plans beyond what it already offers as part of its email and other services. But she said in a statement that 'storage is an important component of making Web [applications] fit easily into consumers' and business users' lives.'

Google's push underlines a shift in how businesses and consumers approach computing. They are increasingly using the Web to access applications and files stored in massive computer data centers operated by tech companies such as Salesforce.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google. Such arrangements, made possible by high-speed Internet connections between homes, offices and data centers, aim to ease users' technology headaches and, in some cases, cut their costs.

Other companies offer various Internet-based file storage services, but most have been slow to catch on with businesses and consumers. Some offerings, such as Yahoo Inc.'s Briefcase Web-based storage service, require users to go to a Web page and click through a few screens to upload a new file and set various limits. Other more sophisticated services have remained niche products.

Google's market power and focus on providing easy-to-use services heighten its chances of having an impact. Google is hoping to distinguish itself from existing online storage services partly by simplifying the process for transferring and opening files. Along with a Web-based interface, Google is trying to let users upload and access files directly from their PC desktops and have the file storage behave for consumers more like another hard drive that is handy at all times, say the people familiar with the matter.

Google faces hurdles on issues such as data privacy, copyright, the economics of adding storage capacity and the technical challenges of offering service without interruption. It is still possible that new developments could lead Google to shift tack or shelve plans for the storage offering in the coming months.

The effort -- at one point known internally at Google as 'My Stuff' -- could add to the challenges facing Microsoft's core Windows operating system and Office productivity software businesses by speeding a shift toward Web-based computing. It also has the potential to affect the economics and usage of home computers, lessening consumers' need to buy big hard drives to store and back up all of their files, for example.

One limitation of such an Internet-based storage service is that it isn't accessible when a person's computer or phone is offline, such as when one is in an airplane, though he could still copy required files to the laptop or other device before disconnecting from the Internet.

For Google, one advantage of offering a broad data-storage service would be to potentially draw consumers to existing Google services that compete with Microsoft's Office applications suite, which includes Word, Outlook and Excel.

Google already effectively offers storage for consumers' files through Web applications such as its Docs word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications and its Gmail email. Users can upload photos to its Picasa Web Albums photo-hosting service, which provides one gigabyte of free storage. They can purchase from 10 gigabytes to 400 gigabytes additional storage for $20 to $500 per year. This storage can be shared by users' Gmail and Picasa accounts and soon with files for Docs.

Google is hoping the new storage service will help tie together some of its other services through a single search box, says one of the people familiar with the matter. So a user might be able to conduct a single search by keywords to find his own privately stored files, regardless of whether they're accessed through Picasa, Docs or a software program running on the user's computer.

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Chris Capossela says the company believes users want both software on their computers and Internet-based services. He said a class of consumers doesn't trust such Web-based storage options, and that Google wouldn't be able to use storage to steer users to its other services if those services aren't great to begin with. 'We've spent so much time and energy understanding how to give customers the utmost assurance of their privacy,' Mr. Capossela said.

For its part, Microsoft offers a test version of a service called Windows Live SkyDrive with one gigabyte of free storage.

It is unclear whether Google plans to display ads as part of the storage service. If it chose to include ads based on the contents of users' files -- as it does with users' Gmail email messages -- that would likely raise red flags for privacy groups and some consumers.

Many businesses have their own policies about storing data online. Consumers can also enjoy a lesser level of legal protection for the privacy of their data when it is on Internet-based file storage services as opposed to just on their own computers, according to Kevin Bankston, staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Google says it is aware of privacy concerns. 'It is certainly approached with the utmost sensitivity on our end,' said the Google spokeswoman. 'We have extensive safeguards in place currently to protect our user data and we have a very strong track record in this regard.'

In addition, Google will likely have to address copyright issues. Allowing consumers to share different types of files such as music with other users could trigger the sort of copyright complaints the company already faces over videos on its YouTube video sharing site. One person familiar with the matter says Google is discussing with copyright holders how to approach the issue and has some preliminary solutions.

The company has been tackling technical issues including how to get the storage service to work seamlessly with software on users' computers so it appears like just another hard drive, say the people familiar with the matter.

A document Google inadvertently released on the Web in March 2006 said it was moving toward being able to 'store 100% of user data,' citing 'emails, Web history, pictures, bookmarks' as a few examples. The document referred to what appeared to be unannounced Google initiatives, including one dubbed 'GDrive' and said they could help compete with Microsoft.

Walking on a railroad
31 January, 2008

When thinking of railroad, I am always in a warm feeling, especially when I am outside far away from my hometown.

I left my hometown to go to college when I was 17 years old. When receiving my acceptance for admission, I was very happy, and I thought my family had the same feeling as me. But things were not always as I thought. One night, my father packed my baggage, suddenly I found he wiped his eyes. He thought I would leave them. He worried about his youngest daughter. At that age, in some families, parents would send their child to the college because they could look after them on the way and arranged their life after getting to college. But I knew my parents could not send me to college because my family was not rich, the return train ticket could afford me several months maintenance. It took 24 hours to college by train. I even could not buy a ticket for a sleeper, it was almost twice price than that of seat. Parents cared it, but I didn`t care. Because I knew they needed to save money for my study, it was not so easy for them to afford me to college. I appreciated them. Times flies, after I graduated from university, I did not select to stay at hometown, I went to another city for work, it needs to spend 8 hours from my hometown to my working city by train. Later, I changed my work, it is in the south of China, it is further than the first work place from my hometown. It takes 36 hours for me to go home by train. Of course, sometimes I go home by air, but I still enjoy the trip by train, I can recall many things related with my parents, it is full of love, I can enjoy more happy time in this long trip on the railroad.

I love my parents, in my mind they accompany me on my trip; I enjoy walking on the railroad, it recalls me many sweet memories, which related with my dear parents…

Norwegian Wood
29 January, 2008

I was thirty-seven then, strapped in my seat as the huge 747 plunged through dense cloud cover on approach to the Hamburg airport. Cold November rains drenched the earth and lent everything the gloomy air of a Flemish landscape: the ground crew ran gear, a flag atop a squat airport building, a BMW billboard. So Germany again.

once the plane was on the ground soft music began to flow from the ceiling speakers: a sweet orchestral cover version of the Beatles' " Norwegian Wood". The melody never failed to send a shudder through me, but this time it hit me harder than ever.

I bent forward in my seat, face in hands to keep my skull from splitting open. Before long one of the German stewardesses approached and asked in English if I was sick. "No," I said, just dizzy"

"Are you sure?"

  "Yes, I'm sure. Thanks."

She smiled and left, and the music changed to a Billy Joel tune. I straightened up and looked out the plane window at the dark clouds hanging over the North Sea, thinking of what I had lost in the course of my life: times gone forever, friends who had died or disappeared, feelings I would never know again.

The plane reached the gate. People began unlatching their seatbelts and pulling baggage from the storage bins, and all the while I was in the meadow. I could smell the grass, feel the wind on my face, hear the cries of the birds. Autumn 1969,and soon I wou1d be twenty.

True, given time enough, I can bring back her face. I start joining image-her tiny, cold hand; her straight, black hair so smooth and cool to the touch; a soft, rounded earlobe and the microscopic mole just beneath it; the camels hair coat she wore in the winter; her habit of looking straight into your eyes when asking a question; the slight trembling that would come to her voice now and then (as if she were speaking on a windy hilltop)-and suddenly her face is there, always in profile at first, because Naoko and I were always out waking together, side by side. Then she turns to me, and smiles, and tilts her head just a bit, and begins to speak, and she looks into my eyes as if trying to catch the image of a minnow that has darted across the pool of a m1impid spring.

I do need that time, though for Naoko's face to appear. And as the years have passed, the time has grown longer. The sad truth is that what I could recall in five seconds all too soon needed ten, then thirty, then a full minute——like shadows lengthening at dusk. Someday, I suppose, the shadows will be swallowed up in darkness. There is no way around it: my memory is growing ever more distant from the spot where Naoko used to stand-ever more distant from the spot where my old self used to stand. And nothing but scenery, that view of the meadow in October, returns again and again to me 1ike a symbolic scene in a movie. Each time it appears, it delivers a kick to some part of my mind. "Wale up," it says. "I’m still here! Wake up and think about it. Think about why I'm still here." The kicking never hurt me. There's no pain at all. Just a hollow sound that echoes with each kick. And even that is bound to fade one day. At the Hamburg airport, though, the kicks were longer and harder than usual which is why I am writing this book: To think. To understand! It just happens to be the way I'm made. I have to write things down to feel I fully comprehend them.

More shopping!
27 January, 2008

Hi everyone and thanks very much for your comments about shopping. Obviously shopping is a very popular past-time in China!

There were some interesting things which people mentioned. For example, one person talked about the skill of bargaining with vendors over the price of an item - offering less than they are asking and so on. To discuss the price of an item and make offers can also be called haggling in English.

However, you might be surprised to know that in Britain it's quite rare to bargain over the price of goods, and it never happens in a shop. Sometimes in a market people might haggle, but generally a price is displayed and that is the price that you pay. One of the few places where people are more likely to haggle is at a car boot sale - a sale of second hand goods from the back of people's cars.

Someone else mentioned that in China most shops only take cash - again this is quite different from the UK. Most shops here, except very small ones, take credit cards, even though sometimes they might charge a fee to use a credit card for a small purchase, for example less than **10 (150 RMB). Of course in markets you usually have to use cash, though even some market stalls have portable credit card readers! People seem to use cash less and less these days - my husband never carries cash - he pays for everything on a card! You can also say 'pay with plastic'.

As far as food shopping goes, most people in the UK do almost all of their food shopping in supermarkets, it's less common to shop for fresh bread or vegetables every day, as seems to be more likely in China.

January Sales
26 January, 2008
For shopoholics, the post-Christmas period means only one thing – sales! Across the country, prices are slashed on clothing, electronics, home furnishings and more, but London is the place for serious shopping, and you can certainly pick up some amazing bargains.

The sales start on Boxing Day - 26th December, and continue for the month of January, but the keenest bargain hunters get there early to be first through the doors. In Oxford Street queues formed outside shops ahead of pre-dawn openings for the start of their sales. At Brent Cross, in north London, more than 1,000 people were queuing at 3.30am for the 'Next' clothing store's sale which began at 4am. Some hardy individuals even camped outside the shops to be first in the line.

Consumers who hit the shops were rewarded with discounts of as much as 80% as department stores joined the sales frenzy. The shops are absolutely heaving as the sales got into full swing, with more than half a million people converging on London's West End.

Famous sales include the biggest, most prestigious shops such as Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty and John Lewis. Department stores are always a good bet – you're likely to find everything you need under one roof, including much-needed refreshments!

It's a good time to stock up on cheap gadgets, and there's no better time to invest in some designer threads.

Some people are taking their partners shopping with them, and buying their Christmas presents in the sale – a practical but unromantic way of making sure you get the gift you really want. For a less exciting but less stressful shopping experience, online retailers are also getting in on the act with January sales of their own.

The most organised of all are those who are already doing their present shopping for next Christmas, in the January sales!
