Shooting Into the Academy

The Royal Academy of Arts in London is giving itself an artistic makeover. Beginning Saturday, the neoclassical institution known for exhibiting Queen Victoria's paintbrushes and J.M.W. Turner's seascapes is devoting all itsNike jordan shoes melo 1.5
galleries for the first time to a contemporary artist, Anish Kapoor. The major survey, "Anish Kapoor," up through Dec. 11, aims to shake up the academy's top-hat reputation by giving free rein to a popular sculptor who makes space-age art from mirrored spheres and globby wax, according to Adrian Locke, exhibitions co-curator. The academy will likely spotlight more contemporary artists in the future. "We don't want to be pigeon-holed into the past," he says. Mr. Kapoor, a London-based sculptor who has represented England in the Venice Biennial and won the Tate's Turner Prize, seized the opportunity to get messy. For the show's main piece, "Svayambh," he set a 30-ton block ofNike jordan
red wax atop a motorized platform so that it shuttles along a 213-foot-long railway track spanning the width of the museum. The work oozes like lava as it traverses the wooden floor and squeezes through several marble doorways. Another highlight is "Shooting Into the Corner," a cannon created to fire 30 tons of red wax "bullets" through a gallery doorway and then splatter onto the wall beyond. By the show's end, the wax is expected to cover the wall and floor like gnarled tree bark. The academy said it has embraced the explosive work and plans to peel off any waxy residue from its historic architecture afterward. The exhibit also represents an artistic stretch forMichael Jackson Memorial Mr. Kapoor, a Mumbai native who rose to fame in London during the early 1980s with a series of minimalist sculptures. These include his carefully arranged piles of brightly colored pigments and his steel wall pieces shaped like concave mirrors. The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns one of his concave works, and collectors have paid as much as $3.8 million at auction for his other pieces. Nearly all of Mr. Kapoor's works attempt to convey a meditative grandeur, particularly his monumental public artworks like "Cloud Gate," a silvery bean-shaped sculpture set amid Chicago's Millennium Park. Another egg-like orb, "Memory," will go up Oct. 21 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The show at the academy features at least one work in this tradition, "Tall Tree and the Eye," a 76-foot-tall tower of mirrored spheres stacked like bubbles in a champagne glass. By contrast, his blood-red wax works inside theAir Jordan 19 academy seem slightly sinister. The artist declined to comment, but Mr. Locke called the new direction "deliberate," adding, "Blood, fire, and destruction are all important elements of creation to him."

Pittsburgh in spotlight as G-20 summit approaches

Pittsburgh conjures up visions of steel mills and gritty sports teams for many. The host city of this week's Shox BB4 Group of 20 summit hopes to update that image. The city, once known for shuttered steel mills and thousands of lost jobs, is now held up as a shining example for ways to weather a recession. That's why the G-20 chose Pittsburgh for its summit, at which representatives of the world's largest economies will meet from Thursday and Friday. "Pittsburgh stands as a bold example of how to create jobs and industries while transitioning to a 21st-century economy," President Obama said earlier in September. The city "will provide both a beautiful backdrop and a powerful example for our work ... in a place known as jordan 16 sneaker the city of bridges, we can come together to advance our common interest in a global recovery," Obama said. It's been a 30-year transformation for Pittsburgh since the failing steel industry left the area with a 18.3 percent jobless rate in the early 1980s, said Dennis Yablonsky, head of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. In nearby Beaver County, three of every 10 people were out of work in 1983, he said. "We did not abandon history," Yablonsky said. "We reinvented it. ... We were heavily dependent on o Shox Turb OH+ SLne industry. Diversification is the key. You spread the risk across several industries." Technology, research and health care became larger parts of the economy, as what Yablonsky called an "eds and meds" strategy drew new jobs to the area. Pittsburgh didn't avoid the recession, he said, but weathered it better than other areas. Local officials are quick to point to a 7.7 percent unemployment rate in August, below the state and national average. The White House and local officials are trying to contrast the city's rust belt reputation with a new focus on environmentally friendly technology. They note that the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, where the G-20 is being held, is the largest environmentally friendly center in the world. "We still have steel mills, sure," Yablonsky Air jordan XXII sneaker said, but they're now mixed with high-tech jobs, including green industries. A sign of this hangs from downtown skyscrapers in the steel city.

Eco-Burials

Eco-Burials I’ve been skirting this post for a while now, wondering if it’s too morbid a topic… but, it’s certain we’ll all have to think about this eventually so perhaps I’m doing a public service! Or, maybe it’s just morbid… Once we kick the bucket, citizens of Air Jordan shoes 23 this fine country are most likely to be buried in a regular ol’ cemetery, using regular ol’ methods. This means bodies embalmed with formaldehyde, which, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, is “a colorless, highly toxic, and flammable gas at room temperature.” Thinking about all that formaldehyde seeping deep into the earth over so many years just makes me sad… And then there are the coffins, which are mostly made from particleboard, covered with laminate. Particle board isn’t usually made from sustainably harvested wood, though one could argue that since it’s composed of sawdust from other applications and is thereby a reuse of existing materials, it’s got some street cred… but that sawdust is held together with noxious glues, and laminate is a petrochemical product. So, not so great. And then! Then there’s the burial, in a sharply manicured and maintained cemetary which is doused with chemicals to ensure the grass is green, and Jordan basketball shoes 23mowed with (presumably) gasoline- powered machines, and watered with copious amounts of blue gold. Even if we opt to skip this whole burial process, there are also eco-issues regarding cremation: From the LA Times: “According to the Cremation Assn. of North America, about one-third of all Americans opt for the flame. We are, after all, a restless lot. Cremation allows the deceased loved one to be easily moved: ash and carry. But there’s a problem. Placing a body in an oven at 1,800 degrees for two hours spews vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, as well as heavy metals and mercury (vaporized from the amalgam in people’s teeth). It seems inconsistent, and painfully ironic, that a dutiful green-nik should ride a bike or use solar panels on his house only to see his lifetime carbon savings go up the smokestack, so to speak.” So, what’s a treehugger to do? Choose a green container: Here’s a brief selection of eco caskets and cremation urns– a simple search will turn up many more:CreativeCoffins.com makes caskets from 60% recycled paper, plus pulp obtained from certified sustainable sources, and uses starch-based glues, no metal hardware, and Phoenix Suns jerseyswoven cotten handlesEcoPod UK has futuristic offerings made from naturally hardened 100% recycled paper, overlaid with handmade Thai colored paper. They also make the cutest urn I’ve ever seen: the Acorn urn, and they offer a Gold leaf ecopod lined with colored feathers. Fancy! EarthUrn offers a dizzying array of eco-options, from biodegradable urns made from salt, cornstarch or sand, to seagrass caskets and recycled paper scattering tubes. Now that’s a niche market, scattering tubes… Plant organic: If you choose to bury, then you might want to consider a “natural cemetery”, which are sprouting up all over the world. Take, for example, Greensprings Natural Cemetary, right here in the Finger Lakes region of New York State: the only allowable headstones are an engraved indigenous rock no larger than 400 inches square and 3 inches thick; embalming isn’t allowed; and the 100 rolling acres will end up looking more like a nature preserve than a cemetery. Here’s a Groovy Green video including some of the Greensprings folks, detailing some of the issues with traditional burials and cemeteries: 827,000 gallons of formaldehyde are buried each year, and 30 million+ board feet of hardwoods are used to make coffins. “Dust to dust isn’t something that generally applies to today’s modern burials”

Lancers aim to rebound after rough finish in '08 campaign

No one said setting up shop in the uber tough landscape of the West Catholic AthleticShox Turb OH+ SL League was easy, but the 2008 season was especially rough for the St. Francis varsity football team. The Lancers netted only one win in league play a year ago, a 35-7 thumping over St. Ignatius at home, finishing a disappointing 1-5-1 in league and 3-6-1 overall. Although the varsity team struggled, the Lancers junior varsity squad rolled out a second straight impressive season, finishing 9-1 a year after going 10-0. With several young players from those teams playing at the varsity level now, things jordan 21 sneakerare looking up for a potential sleeper WCAL contender. "We should be respectable," St. Francis head coach Mike Mitchell said. "I'm hoping we're up near the top. Our league is so tough, every week is a heavyweight fight." One thing not working in the Lancers' favor is arguably one of the toughest schedules in the Central Coast Section. St. Francis plays perennial powers Oak Grove, Los Gatos and Palma in non-league match-ups before entering WCAL league play. The league slate begins at St. Ignatius on Oct. 3. Battles against WCAL favorites Serra and Valley Christian follow. "It's going to be an interesting September," Mitchell said. "If we can get through Nike air jordanthose schools, we'll in good shape to have success in league." While Lancers fans might not be able to pick out an easy mark on the schedule, one thing the roster isn't lacking is speed.

Shake the Government’s Helping Hand. Or Bite It.

IT was a “risky scheme,” in the view of its passionate opponents, an example of ideological overreach and political hubris. The president’s party wavered in the face of organized and spontaneous protests, especially from the elderly. Eventually, President George W. Bush’s plan to add private investment accounts to Social Security, the centerpiece of his second-term agenda, withered and died. Just a few years later, echoes of that battle are reverberating around theJordan basketball shoes 3.5
country as the Republicans employ remarkably similar tactics to torpedo President Obama’s drive for an overhaul of the health care system. Summoning visions of a Frankenstein-like debacle, Republicans have labeled the Democratic approach a “risky health care experiment.” They have allied themselves with — and stoked the fears of — older voters. Sensing that economic insecurity can be channeled into resisting change, they are trying to persuade Americans that they are better off with the system they know, however flawed and fiscally unsustainable it may be in the long run, than with one that would require a leap of faith. But theNike air jordan 3.5
two showdowns are more than mirror images of political gamesmanship. Taken together, they help define the current boundaries of the unending American debate over how to balance big government against market forces. And the similarities help to explain the political climate President Obama faces as he tries to salvage his health care initiative with a take-charge address Wednesday evening to a joint session of Congress. His job that night will be not just to sell a health care plan, but to reassure Americans that his approach will remain within their ideological comfort zone. To do so, he will have to convince the nation — to a degree not required of him as he rushed to pass the economic stimulus package and take other emergency actions — that it can trust government to be both competent and restrained. His success or failure will not only have big political implications for him and his agenda. The outcome will say a lot about theair jordan 2.5
nation’s ability to deal with one of its biggest long-term problems, the huge and growing costs of supporting an aging population. While left-right arguments can be abstract to the average voter, the relative benefits of the free market and the government come home to people when they determine the quality of their health care and the security of their retirement. Looking back on it, the failure of the Social Security proposal in 2005 marked the symbolic end of more than two decades in which conservatives had pushed — successfully, more often than not — to diminish the role of government and to elevate the role of the market in the national economy and the lives of individuals. In failing to alter the foundation of the social welfare system — transforming a guaranteed government benefit into a hybrid that would allow people to invest in 401(k)-type accounts, with all the risk and reward that can entail — the Bush White House found the outer limit of the public’s willingness to embrace the market as a force for social good. Ever since, theJordan basketball shoes 6 ring
ideological pendulum has swung leftward: the election of a Democratic Congress in 2006; the economic meltdown last year and the ensuing massive intervention in the private sector by Washington; President Obama’s support for tighter regulation of Wall Street and other industries. Now the question is whether that swing is already hitting its limit in the health care fight. The outcome will not be known for weeks or months, and it is still a matter of debate whether the opposition that flared over the last month represents a broad-based discomfort with the government’s presumed role in a new system or just noise generated by conservative interest groups. Liberals are confident Mr. Obama will prevail because “the vast majority of Americans face increasing economic insecurity and feel the health care system isn’t working,” said Roger Hickey, a veteran progressive activist who has been in the thick of both the Social Security and health care battles. But the spasms of anxiety and anger evident in the debate suggest that Democrats may have to scale back their ambitions. TheNike air jordan 6 ring
administration has already signaled that it is wavering on its call for a government-run competitor to private health insurers, a proposal that liberals consider vital but that has helped fuel the opposition argument that Washington is moving perilously close to dictating personal health decisions. It is entirely possible that this so-called “public option” could end up as the Democratic equivalent of Social Security privatization, an ambitious effort whose failure ends up defining one of the nation’s ideological borders. “America in general is fairly nonideological and pragmatic, and we tend to play within the 40 yard lines,” said Peter Wehner, a conservative commentator who was a top policy and political aide to Mr. Bus Big policy changes don’t come along very often, and when they do come along, especially when dealing with entitlement programs, you need a kind of civic propulsion to drive them through,” he said. “If you don’t have that intense public sentiment on your side, you’re not going to get it through.” There are times, though, when ideological boundaries are fungible, particularly in periods of crisis, a fact clear to Mr. Obama, who presented much of his agenda as an emergency response to the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Even before Mr. Obama took office, the public seemed to have suspended philosophical judgment about economic policy, accepting that Mr. Bush and his team were justified in gigantic bailouts of Wall Street because the alternative was a likely calamity. Nearly eight months after the inauguration, the economy is still shaky. But it has stabilized sufficiently that the nation is no longer gripped by the sense of urgency that allowed Mr. Obama, almost without challenge, to carry out an audacious act of industrial engineering: reshaping the automobile industry from the Oval Office in a matter of weeks. On health care, he is getting no such philosophical pass. Theair jordan 3.5
most relevant political framework instead appears to be a more problematic one inherited from his predecessor: a general loss of faith in government. Four years after the botched response to Hurricane Katrina deepened skepticism about Washington’s ability to help ordinary people, Mr. Obama’s opponents are benefiting from intense suspicion in some quarters about the government’s motives and capabilities, helping them blunt the drive to give government a more active role in health care. So while Republicans would still have trouble these days sustaining an argument in favor of greater reliance on market forces, they are having little trouble mounting a defense against a larger role for government. “We’re still in a Reagan era, where people are leery about the difference between what politicians promise and what they can deliver,” said Stephen Wayne, a professor of government at Georgetown University who is writing a book about Mr. Obama. “Obama raised hopes, but he didn’t allay the fears we have about overpromising and underdelivering.” Beyond crises, the other main route to vaulting past normal ideological limitations is presidential leadership. Roosevelt brought the nation along with him over intense objections from the right; Reagan did likewise despite apocalyptic warnings from the left. But Mr. Obama, despite a legislative voting record that located him far more toward the left than the center, has built his political identity more around transcending old divisions than leading crusades. To lead his most liberal allies to where they want to go would require him to shed his reputation — born of the dualities of his own life as well as the need to maintain an electoral coalition — as someone who can bring divergent viewpoints together. So Mr. Obama faces this paradox: an electorate that on the whole tends to be reluctant to veer too far left or right, despite the passions emanating from both ends of the spectrum, is now represented by a remarkably polarized Congress that seems inclined to shun compromise. Traditional crucibles of bipartisanship in Washington, like the Senate Finance Committee, have exhibited little of the philosophical flexibility or legislative creativity that create grand compromises. Of 218 elected Republicans in the two chambers of Congress, precisely one of them, Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, is holding any meaningful negotiations with the administration, and only a small handful of others are even talking to Democrats about health care. And however the fight comes out, the ideological wars will go on. The White House is already making plans to put Social Security back on the national agenda next year.

Snow Leopard: An Upgrade in Camouflage

Snow Leopard: An Upgrade in Camouflage The power of Apple's new Mac operating system is mostly under the hood By Stephen H. But Muratti cigarettesSnow Leopard, the operating system that's available on Aug. 28, is so short on eye candy that it was hard for me to tell anything had changed after I installed it on my iMac. In contrast to Windows 7, where Microsoft (MSFT) focused on fixing the dismal experience of using the Vista operating system, Apple concentrated on improving OS X's underpinnings. The result is a winner, mainly because Snow Leopard has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange. This makes it much easier for people in a Microsoft work environment either to use a Mac on the job or to get to their mail, contacts, and calendar from a Mac at home. For anyone who has struggled with such tasks in the past, Snow Leopard (officially OS X 10.6) is well worth the bargain price of $29, or $49 for a family pack that's good for up to five computers. Until now, Mac users had two less-than-ideal ways to get access to Exchange. Office 2008 for the Mac includes a program called Entourage, a pale imitation of Outlook that lets you into your Exchange mailbox with limited access to contacts and calendar. The more ambitious approach was to set up Windows on the Mac, using Parallels or VMware (VMW) virtual machine software, and Air Max LTD then run Outlook itself. Microsoft has responded to Snow Leopard by promising real Outlook for the Mac—but not until late next year. There's no reason to wait. Once you upgrade to Snow Leopard, you should be able to add your Exchange account to your Mac without help from your IT department. You just enter your e-mail address and password in the Mail application, and you will see your messages, along with to- dos and notes. The iCal scheduling program takes care of appointments and other calendar items. Address Book deals with contacts, including the global address list, a big deal for Exchange users. The one catch is that all of this works only with Exchange 2007, the latest release. Quite a few large organizations run older versions of the software. Much of the effort behind Snow Leopard went into building a software platform for the future. Most new computers have 2 or 4 processors, and that will soon increase to 8, 16, or more. But today only the most skilled programmers know how to use this power efficiently when they are writing applications that users crave. A new technology in mahinaSnow Leopard, called Grand Central Dispatch, is designed to make it easier for developers to create programs using multiple processors, reducing the wait for a processor to finish a task. The result should be more powerful and smarter software for everything from games to home automation. Another advance in the operating system, called OpenCL, lets programs take better advantage of powerful graphic adapters in many current computers. Snow Leopard also completes the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit computing, which enhances performance and allows the use of vast amounts of memory. Unlike in the Windows world, where this transition is still causing pain and limiting the memory of many Windows 7 systems to an increasingly inadequate 3 gigabytes, Apple has pulled it off seamlessly. Finally, Snow Leopard marks the end of the transition from the old PowerPC chips to Intel (INTC) processors; the software only runs on Intel-based Macs. (Apple completed the switch to Intel chips in late 2006.) The new operating system isn't completely devoid of flashy features. For example, Chinese speakers can write ideograms on the touchpad of a MacBook, and Air Jordan 23the software will produce the correct Chinese character in the text. Such frills aside, Snow Leopard is an unusual Apple offering, being nearly all steak with very little sizzle. But it is an inexpensive and painless upgrade. If you have an Intel-based Mac, and especially if you use Exchange mail, you'll want to install it.

New rules coming to fight pilots' fatigue?

Crowded skies and exhausted pilots are a bad mix, the airline industry and pilot unions agree, but they're struggling over what to do about it. The airlines want to schedule some pilots withAir Jordan 22 less-taxing flights — fewer takeoffs and landings — but for longer, not shorter, hours in the cockpit. The unions say they won't agree to more hours for those pilots in exchange for fewer hours for pilots who fly as many as a half dozen short flights a day or take off at odd times. That was the main sticking point in an otherwise harmonious effort over the past month and a half to rewrite flying-time rules that in many cases are a half-century old and predate recent scientific findings concerning fatigue. The advisory committee on pilot fatigue was expected to deliver its recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration late Tuesday. Committee members said the FAA had asked them not to make their recommendations public. Concerned by the possibility that pilot fatigue has contributed to fatal crashes, some members of Congress have been pressing for changes. There are likely to be at least three sets of recommendations. Labor, passenger airlines and cargo carriers all have their own lists, participants said. "There will be more than one sheet of music coming out," said Russ Leighton, director of aviation safety for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. It will be up to FAA to write the final tune, he said. Although Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt has promised to go over those recommendations swiftly and turn them into a formal proposal by the FAA, the process will at aImpax Run 2 minimum take months to complete. Current rules say pilots can be scheduled for up to 16 hours on duty and up to eight hours of actual flight time in a day, with a minimum of eight hours off in between. The rules don't take into account that it is probably more tiring for regional airline pilots to fly five or six short legs in seven hours than it is for a pilot with a major airline to fly eight hours across the Atlantic to Europe with only one takeoff and landing. Finding ways to prevent pilot fatigue has stymied federal regulators and the airline industry for decades. The National Transportation Safety Board has been recommending since 1990 that rules on how many hours pilots can be scheduled to work be updated to reflect modern research and take into account early starting times and frequent takeoffs and landings. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said she didn't expect Tuesday's recommendations to address all the issues but hoped they would create a foundation. "You have to build all the rest of the house around it," she said. Bill Voss, president of the Flight Safety Foundation think tank in Alexandria, Va., said there's now enough research to answer a lot of the questions that used to keep airline management and pilots on opposite sides of the debate, with pilots wanting tighter restrictions and airlines wanting more efficiency. One change that might make sense would beNike Men Dunk Mid allowing back-to-back flights from one U.S. coast to the other, he said. Fatigue rules currently prohibit such flights, but a pilot might be less tired flying from Los Angeles to New York and back in one day rather than doing it after just a few hours of sleep, Voss said. That possibility was raised by airline representatives at the fatigue committee meetings, participants said. "We think that everybody recognizes that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution," said David Castelveter, spokesman for the Air Transport Association. Some members of Congress don't trust the FAA to finally come to grips with the problem. A bill under consideration in the House would force the agency's hand. It also would require airlines to use fatigue risk management systems — complex scheduling programs that alert a company to potential problems. After the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the bill last month, Chairman James Oberstar ran through a list of airline crashes in recent decades. "The common thread running through all of it is fatigue," said Oberstar, D-Minn. "We have many experiences of the flight crew, the cabin crew, who in cases of emergency were just so numb they couldn't respond instantly to a tragedy at hand." Linda Zimmerman, a retired Ohio teacher whose sister died in a 2004 regional airline crash in Kirksville, Mo., said the pace of the government's response saddened her. "So many people have died and theyAir Jordan 21 haven't done anything about it," she said. Corporate Airlines Flight 5966 was preparing to land on Oct. 19, 2004, when the twin-engine turboprop slammed into trees. The pilots and 11 passengers were killed. Two injured passengers survived by jumping from the plane moments before it was engulfed in flames. The NTSB said the pilots failed to notice that their plane had descended too quickly because they didn't follow procedures and engaged in unprofessional cockpit banter. But the board also said the captain and first officer probably were exhausted — they were completing their sixth flight of the day, had been on duty more than 14 hours and had flown three trips the day before. Studies show exhaustion can impair a pilot's judgment in much the same way alcohol does. It's not uncommon for overtired pilots to focus on a conversation or a single chore and miss other things going on around them, including critical flight information. In a few cases, they've just fallen asleep. Last year, two go! airlines pilots conked out for at least 18 minutes during a midmorning flight from Honolulu to Hilo, Hawaii, as their plane continued to cruise past its destination and out to sea. Air traffic controllers were finally able to raise the pilots, who turned around the plane with its 40 passengers and landed it safely. TheAir Max LTD Trainer airline is a Mesa Airlines subsidiary. NTSB said that even though the pilots had not been working long that day, they were clearly fatigued. They cited the pilots' work schedules — the day of the incident was the third straight both had started duty at 5:40 a.m. — and said the captain had an undiagnosed case of sleep apnea. FAA rules on how many hours an airline pilot may fly or be on duty before he must rest have been virtually unchanged for nearly a half-century. If airlines had to allow their crews more rest, they would have to hire more crews. NTSB's investigation of the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 on Feb. 12 near Buffalo, N.Y., killing 50, has spotlighted the long hours, low pay and long-distance commutes of regional airline pilots. It's not clear where the captain of Flight 3407 slept the night before the crash, but it appears he may have tried to nap in a busy airport crew room where his company — regional carrier Colgan Air Inc. of Manassas, Va., which operated the flight for Continental — kept bright lights on to discourage extended sleeping. The first officer commuted overnight from her home near Seattle to Newark, N.J., to make the flight to Buffalo. The fatigue committee put aside the question ofNike Men Dunk Low whether such long-distance commutes — a cherished prerogative of flight crews — contribute to fatigue and should be restricted. "Both sides agreed it's the responsibility of a professional pilot to show up for work fit and rested and ready to fly," Leighton said.

After the Clunker Party, an Auto Sales Hangover

Cash for clunkers did its job in August, pushing car sales to levels not seen since last year. But the boom from the U.S. government's program has already worn off for automakers. Car companies said on Sept. 1 that their August sales soared to an annualized selling rate of about 14 million, thanks to the government's clunkers program, nike jordan which gave $3,500 to $4,500 to consumers trading in an old gas guzzler for something more efficient. The accelerated sales rate was a boon for carmakers, especially Ford (F), Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC), and Hyundai. But the industry appears to be giving those gains back as the annualized rate has fallen to 8 million vehicles since Aug. 25, when the program stopped. "August was the best month of the year, but it's possible that it could be followed by the worst month this year," says Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive officer of Edmunds.com. The clunkers program was especially helpful to Hyundai, whose sales soared 47% for the month, according to Autodata. Ford saw its sales increase 17%, Toyota was up 10.5%, Honda 10%, Mazda 12%, and Kia posted a dramatic 60% rise. Tracy McGrady8 General Motors and Chrysler both saw sales declines. But GM's 20% decline was partly due to a rough comparison with August 2008; that year- earlier month marked GM's 100th anniversary and the company offered employee pricing and a truck-blowout sale, noted Mark LaNeve, GM's vice- president for North American sales. Overall, GM considered August 2009 a success; it had just exited bankruptcy court a month earlier and yet managed to hold its market share at 19.4% while cutting incentives by $500 a vehicle, to $3,200 per car, LaNeve said. Rebates May Have Cannibalized Fall Sales But like other carmakers, GM saw sales trail off after the clunkers program ended. And it appears that the rebates sucked some sales out of September as well. Michael DiGiovanni, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis, says that he thinks about 200,000 of the 700,000 cars sold under the clunkers program were pulled ahead from future months. Thanks to the clunkers rebates, Ford was able to drop its incentive spending in August by $451 per car, and the total that the company spent per vehicle on incentives dropped below $3,000 for the first time in at least two years. That's about $1,800 less than its incentive spending a year earlier. Michael Jackson MemorialFord executives say their cars are fetching better prices, which should bode well for third-quarter earnings. Two of Ford's offerings—the Focus and the Escape—were among the top-selling vehicles under the clunkers program. Sales of the Focus rose 56%, while those of the Escape crossover climbed 49%. Ford economists estimated that without the clunkers program the industry would have seen a 10.5 million annualized selling rate in August. That's historically very weak, but better than the first half, when cars sold at an annualized pace of around 10 million. That indicates the economy may be starting to come back, albeit slowly. Chrysler sales were off 15%, at least in part because the company had no inventory. Chrysler announced that it would match the government's clunker cash with deals of its own. But that cleared out passenger cars that qualified for the government program and left the company with little to sell as the program wore on. Tracy McGrady Many carmakers are now in the same bind, Anwyl says, if not to the degree that Chrysler is. He says that with inventories so low, dealers won't want to negotiate as much on price. Automakers have also cut back on rebates, pushing car prices up until inventories are replenished in the next four to six weeks. Prices are up $500 to $1,000 a car, which will slow sales and add to the hangover from the clunker program. Looking ahead, sales should slowly rebound, with analysts predicting that they will hit an annualized rate of 10.5 million in the fourth quarter and pick up slowly but steadily next year.
