Obama signs fair pay restoration bill
Obama signs fair pay restoration bill WASHINGTON -- Standing in the East Room of the White House, Rep. Rosa DeLauro smiled and robustly applauded Thursday morning as President Barack Obama entered the
UGGroom with Lilly Ledbetter. She was here to see Obama sign into law the first bill that the 111th Congress had sent the new president -- one that the 3rd District Democrat had championed as part of a decade-long struggle on behalf of women and others facing wage discrimination. "It was a thrill to be there at the White House,"
Nike air shox DeLauro said later. "You get a sense of where the priorities lie." In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court tossed out a lawsuit that Ledbetter filed against Goodyear Tire & Rubber after she found out that for years the company paid her less as a manager than her male counterparts. A majority of the justices found that Ledbetter filed her lawsuit too late. A valid claim, they said, needed to be filed within six months of the first discriminatory act -- never mind that she did not learn of the discrimination until years later. DeLauro, who for more than a decade has pushed legislation
Nike air Forceto make it easier to file wage discrimination lawsuits, joined other women lawmakers last year and again this year to champion legislation to remove what they deemed an unrealistic deadline for initiating a lawsuit. "We are upholding one of this nation's first principles: that we are all created equal and each deserve a chance to pursue our own version of happiness," Obama said before signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act. Then with a stroke of his pen, Obama -- just nine days into office -- signed into law a bill to give workers a realistic opportunity to sue employers over pay discrimination. Beyond this particular bill, DeLauro said that Obama was sending a message about his priorities just as Bill Clinton did in 1993 when he signed Sen. Chris Dodd's Family and Medical
UGG Leave bill into law DeLauro said that Democrats are making good on their campaign promises as the Ledbetter bill is signed into law and as Congress quickly acts to deliver economic relief and additional support for children's health insurance. "It is about turning around the economy for working people and middle-class America," she said. At a reception after the bill signing, first lady Michelle Obama spoke highly of Ledbetter whom she met during the presidential campaign. "Anyone who meets Lilly can't help but be impressed by her commitment, her dedication, her focus. She knew unfairness when she saw it, and was willing to do something about it because it was the right thing to do -- plain and simple," Obama said. Ledbetter said that while the bill wouldn't enable her to
Nike air shoxcollect a dime from Goodyear, it provided a far richer reward. "I know that my daughter and granddaughters, and your daughters and your granddaughters, will have a better deal," she said. "That's what made this fight one we had to win. And now with this win we will make a big difference in the real world." DeLauro, who also attended the reception,
Nike air Force said that Ledbetter is an inspiration. "She gets nothing from this -- nothing," DeLauro said. "She did it for her daughters. And, she said that now we need to move onto the Paycheck Fairness Act." The House has already approved the bill but the Senate has yet to act.

Obama tackles Afghanistan and Mideast conflict
Obama tackles Afghanistan and Mideast conflict WASHINGTON (AP) — Taking on two of his toughest foreign policy challenges, President Barack Obama pledged to find a new course in Afghanistan and to help Israel achieve a broad peace with the Arab world. On his second full day in office, Obama on Thursday also sought to reverse one of the most contentious policies of the Bush administration by signing an executive order
Nike air shox to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects while leaving undecided how to dispose of unresolved war crimes cases there. The new commander in chief visited the State Department to underscore a major theme of his young administration: that diplomacy will play a more central role
Nike air Forcein American foreign policy — not just in seeking peace in the Middle East but also in defending the United States against global terrorist threats. He struck a tone designed to contrast with that of his predecessor, saying a new approach is overdue. "The inheritance of our young century demands a new era of American leadership," Obama said. "We must recognize that America's strength comes not just from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from our enduring values. And for the sake of our national security and the common aspirations of people around the globe, this era has to begin now." He said there would be no lasting peace in Afghanistan unless "spheres of opportunity" are expanded for Afghans and their neighbors in Pakistan, where al-Qaida and other extremist
Nike air shox Nike air Forcegroups have found haven. "This is truly an international challenge of the highest order." Obama said. Obama offered no new formula for success in the struggle against Islamic extremists in Afghanistan, nor did he commit to a specific increase in U.S. troop strength there. He named former U.N. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke as a special coordinator of U.S. policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan. In an appearance with Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the State Department, Holbrooke said he would be working on the Afghan problem with a range of military leaders, including Gen. David Petraeus, who is responsible for combat operations there, as well as Gen. David McKiernan, the on-the-ground commander in Afghanistan, and Adm. Mike Mullen, the Joint Chiefs chairman. "If our resources are mobilized and coordinated and pulled together, we can quadruple, quintuple, multiply by tenfold the effectiveness of our efforts there,"
UGGHolbrooke said. Inheriting a war with no end in sight amid rising Taliban resistance, Obama said his administration was undertaking a "careful review" of policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan and would refocus attention on that region — a veiled reference to getting U.S. troops out of Iraq to enable a bigger commitment in Afghanistan. He painted a grim picture of Afghanistan's situation and raised the specter of future al-Qaida attacks. "The Afghan government has been unable to deliver basic
Nike air shoxservices," he said. "Al-Qaida and the Taliban strike from bases embedded in rugged tribal terrain along the Pakistani border. And while we have yet to see another attack on our soil since 9/11, al-Qaida terrorists remain at large and remain plotting." On the Middle East, Obama struck themes familiar from his predecessor's administration. He backed Israel's right to defend itself, decried rocket attacks on Israel by the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, lamented "substantial suffering" and loss among civilians in Gaza and favored an international effort to develop a durable and sustainable cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. "Lasting peace requires more than a long cease-fire, and that's why I will sustain an active commitment to seek two states living side by side in peace and security," the president said, referring to Israel and a Palestinian state. He said George J. Mitchell, the retired Senate majority leader, will be his special envoy to the Middle East to carry forward a U.S. commitment to solidify the cease-fire in Gaza "as well as the effort to help Israel reach a broader peace with the Arab world that recognizes its rightful place in the community of nations." Obama stressed the importance of international humanitarian relief for Gaza. "Relief efforts must be able to reach innocent Palestinians who depend on them," he said. "The United States will fully support an international donor's conference to seek short-term humanitarian assistance and long-term reconstruction for the Palestinian economy. This assistance will be provided to and guided by the Palestinian Authority." He notably mentioned no such role for Hamas. Osama Hamdan, a Beirut-based spokesman for Hamas, dismissed Obama's remarks as nothing new. "Obama is still on the same path as previous leaders and
Nike air Force also will make the same mistakes as Bush that ignited the region instead of bringing stability," Hamdan told Al-Jazeera television. On her first day at the State Department, Clinton made a round of calls to foreign leaders, including Jordan's King Abdullah II. The Jordanian monarch pledged to work with the new administration to launch "serious and effective Mideast peace negotiations to reach the two-state solution as the only means to achieve security and stability in the region," according to a statement issued by the royal palace in Amman, Jordan. Clinton's call to Abdullah followed a call from Obama on Wednesday, who also expressed his commitment to achieving peace between the Arabs and the Israelis, the statement said. By ordering that the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay be closed by the end of the year, and by closing any remaining CIA secret prisons overseas and banning harsh interrogation practices,
Nike air shoxObama said he was signaling that the U.S. would confront global violence without sacrificing "our values and our ideals." "First, I can say without exception or equivocation that the United States will not torture," he said. "Second, we will close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and determine how to deal with those who have been held there." Congressional Democrats welcomed the moves. "President Obama is ushering in a new era of smart, strong and principled national security policies, and Congress stands ready to work with him each step of the way," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, outgoing chairman of the Intelligence Committee. But there was skeptical questioning from GOP leaders. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said it "would be irresponsible to close this terrorist detainee facility" before important questions are resolved. Boehner said these include where will the detainees go when Guantanamo is closed and how will they be secured? The Bush administration was unable to
UGG persuade other countries to accept any of the several dozen detainees who have been cleared for repatriation but remain in limbo at Guantanamo. Others there are deemed too dangerous to be released but were not facing war crimes trials because of complications with the evidence against them.

Was Biden offered choice of two big jobs? By Steve Holland
Was Biden offered choice of two big jobs? By Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Did Joe Biden have his choice of two jobs for Barack Obama, vice president or secretary of state? His wife, Jill Biden, suggested on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Monday that her husband had his pick of either job -- prompting an official statement later from the
Air Force 25 Biden team clarifying her remarks. Jill Biden said on the Oprah show that she wanted her husband to be vice president instead of secretary of state, chiefly because it would involve less travel. "If you're secretary of state, you'll be away, we'll never see you, you know," she said, describing how she and her husband had talked about it. "I'll see you at a state dinner once and awhile. But I said, if you are vice president, the entire family, because they worked so hard for the election, they can be involved. They can come to our home. They can go to events, they can be with us all the time. And that's what's important to us,"
Shox Ride & Plus she said. Biden, seated at his wife's side, looked sheepish and tried to shush his wife after she made the remark. The Bidens were surprise guests on the Oprah show, which was moved from Chicago to Washington as part of celebrations surrounding Obama's inauguration on Tuesday. Obama chose Hillary Clinton to become his secretary of state after passing her over for the vice presidency. The vice president becomes president in the event of the death or incapacitation of the president. But the job carries few official duties compared with those of the secretary of state, who has a lead role
UGG Adirondack Boot IIin conducting foreign policy. Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander issued a statement that clarified Jill Biden's comments, saying Joe Biden had only been offered the vice presidency. "Like anyone who followed the presidential campaign this summer, Dr. Jill Biden knew there was a chance that President-elect Obama might ask her husband to serve in some capacity and that, given his background, the positions of vice president and secretary of state were possibilities," she said. "Dr. Biden's point to Oprah today was that being vice president would be a better fit for their family because they would get to see him more and get to participate in serving more.
Shox Allegria GlowTo be clear, President-elect Obama offered Vice President-elect Biden one job only -- to be his running mate. And the vice president-elect was thrilled to accept the offer," she said.

Santa Monica designer Michael S. Smith to decorate Obama's White House living area
Santa Monica designer Michael S. Smith to decorate Obama's White House living area
Santa Monica designer Michael S. Smith has won the commission to redecorate the White House living Shox Ride & Plusquarters for the Obama family.
"He sounds like a wise choice, with his interest in traditional though not pedantic museum settings," said historian William Seale, author of "The President's House: A History," who cited Smith's studies at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. "What works best in the White House is someone who is immersed in the past and can design in a modern way."
Recent presidents and first ladies have hired a designer from their home states. President George W. and First Lady Laura Bush hired Kenneth Blasingame of Forth Worth to Air Force 25tone down the bright colors brought in by President Bill and Hillary Clinton's Arkansas designer, Little Rock-based Kaki Hockersmith.
Since the Truman administration, however, most presidents have engaged top names in New York City's design firmament. President Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower used Park Avenue modernist Dorothy Draper, President John and Jacqueline Kennedy relied on society decorator Sister Parish, and President George and Barbara Bush employed Manhattanite Mark Hampton, who had created Christmas displays at the White House for the Carter and Reagan families.
Smith has not yet announced his plans for the Obamas, and calls to his office were not returned. The 44-year-old California native and graduate of L.A.'s Otis College of Art and Design will be the second Angeleno to decorate the White House since World War II. President Ronald and Nancy Reagan worked with William Shox Allegria GlowHaines protege Ted Graber in the 1980s.
"They did spectacular things," Seale said. "With Ted Graber, the Reagans created a stage for his presidency. But as dramatic as it was, Graber understood function so well, and the family quarters had never really worked before; they were never really furnished for daily use. He took the time to make them as livable as they are today."
http://www.4uaf.com
While working with clients such as Steven Spielberg, Dustin Hoffman and Cindy Crawford, Smith has achieved a reputation for balancing the glamorous and the functional, the modern and the classic.
Though the White House may be a high-profile assignment, it is not necessarily a high-ticket job. According to Seale, the incoming president usually is allocated $100,000 per term for redecorating expenses, a stipend that is taxed as personal income.
That may not be as limiting as it sounds. Many presidents bring their own furniture into their new quarters, and President-elect Barack and Michelle Obama also will have access toNike Air Force 1 Mid the White House warehouses.
"It's been a mandate since the Kennedy administration that nothing can be thrown away," Seale said. "So Mrs. Obama will be shown a catalog of furniture, drapery, even curtain rods."
Unlike the official state rooms, the personal rooms are not subject to restrictions.
"The president can do anything. If he wants to make a room look like the Brighton Pavilion, he can," Seale said, referring to the extravagant seaside palace of King George IV in England -- though that's not likely. The Obamas,Shox FSM he said, "seem to love old houses. They have an early 20th century classic Colonial Revival, so they are obviously interested in architecture."
In November, the Obamas' new designer published a book, "Michael S. Smith: Houses," in which he appropriately called upon a Hollywood metaphor to explain his approach: "It's as if I'm directing a movie that was written by someone Nike Men Air Force 1 Highelse. I have to take their vision and turn it into three-dimensional reality."

Former New Jersey Net Nenad Krstic happy to be back in NBA with Thunder
Former New Jersey Net Nenad Krstic happy to be back in NBA with Thunder
So here's the weirdest part about playing pro basketball in Russia: Sometimes you'd show up for practice -- ready and able to go all-out, with your ankles already taped -- and your coach tells you to take the day off.
Or you show up for a game feeling like you can beat the world -- especially when the opponent has noShox Legend Trainer one bigger than 6-7 -- and your coach plays you for 12 minutes.
"The coach just had a weird tactic for me," Nenad Krstic explained Sunday. "He didn't want me to practice at all. And then, I didn't play much, because he said he was saving me for the second part of the season. He just kept saying, 'You'll play more when we really need you.'
"I told him I wanted to play more, but he didn't speak English very well. Maybe he was scared for my knee or something, but I kept trying to explain that I could practice and play more. He wouldn't do it. But he is a good man, really. I never argued with him."
If there was a method to the madness conjured by Stanislav Eremin, head coach of Triumph Moscow, it eludes Krstic to this day.
http://www.air-shox.com
But that's why he got out of Russia when the first opportunity arose three weeks ago, and that's why he'll be wearing an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey Monday night, when they visit Izod Center to play the Nets.
And for the record, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Krstic's knee, which is why he has become one of Scott Brooks' most important players after just three games.
"It's really great -- feels like new," Krstic said of the left knee that suffered the ligament tear 25 months ago, an injury that convinced the Nets that he Shox VCwasn't worth re-signing last July. "I talked to doctors, even the ones who did the surgery, and they tell me I'm fine. I feel normal again. In Russia, we didn't play a lot of games, so there was an opportunity to work on my quads and stuff.
"I don't even need ice after games anymore. I can't remember the last time I did that."
Actually, he could barely remember when his knees weren't a source of frustration. That's another reason why he and the Nets underwent that divorce.
It was last July 5 that Krstic gave an interview to Sportski Zurnal -- the Serbian sports daily -- and accused the Nets' training staff of mishandling his rehab, and rushing him back to the floor before he was ready. He holds no grudge, and hopes the Nets have forgotten his remarks as well, but the accusation stung.
He rephrases it this way now: "Something was wrong with the rehab, right now I can see it," he said. "Well, I can't call it wrong -- that's not a good word. But I didn't do the right stuff with my knee. The Oklahoma coaches can see I'm doing a lot of good things now. Maybe some of the Air Force 25exercises weren't right.
"So something was wrong -- I wasn't ready to play, and there was swelling, so I was upset. Maybe it just takes time, I don't know. Nobody did anything on purpose. They did their best. I was just frustrated at the time."
There's none of that anymore. He's back in the show, he is already a huge part of the Thunder offense (25 shots in 52 minutes says it all) and he's pleased that the Nets are doing well.
And Monday, he's back in a place that he loves, albeit briefly.
"I haven't been here for nine months, I missed it so much," said Krstic, who spent Sunday visiting friends in Manhattan and near the townhouse he owns in Hudson County. "I Nike Air Force 1 Midliked it in New Jersey and the people -- it was a nice four years in my life, and they gave me the opportunity to play in the NBA. Injuries happen -- that's part of the deal. Right now I can't be mad at anybody."
NOTES
With Yi Jianlian (broken finger) out until after the All-Star break, Lawrence Frank named Ryan Anderson as his starting point forward even though the rookie has been out of the rotation since Dec. 31.

India Presses Pakistan to Conduct Thorough Mumbai Attacks Probe
India Presses Pakistan to Conduct Thorough Mumbai Attacks Probe
By Edward JohnsonJan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- India pressed Pakistan to investigate the Mumbai attacks thoroughly after the government in Islamabad confirmed the surviving gunman is a Pakistani national.
Pakistan should continue the probe and “take it to the logical conclusion so that the perpetrators could be brought to justice,” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in New Delhi yesterday, state-run broadcasterShox Ride & Plus Doordarshan reported.
Indian authorities say Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the only one of 10 gunmen to survive the Nov. 26-29 assault, told interrogators the attacks were planned and carried out by the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Until two days ago, the Pakistani government said there was no proof its nationals were involved.
“We have seen a consistent flip-flop in the reaction of the government in Islamabad,” Mukherjee said, adding Pakistan may again revert to “denial mode.”
Pakistan said this week it is seriously examining a dossier of evidence on the attacks provided by India. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani two days ago rejected Indian allegations the attackers received the support of “official agencies” in Pakistan and said such accusations could raise tensions.
The U.S. State Department yesterday called on the nuclear- armed neighbors to increase cooperation.
“We’ll continue to encourage both of them to work not only on trying to find out who the culpritsAir Force 25 were but also to cooperate much more closely on fighting terrorism,” deputy spokesman Robert Wood told reporters in Washington.
Escalating Tensions
The U.S. has sought to stop tensions between the countries escalating and fears a conflict could distract Pakistan from tackling al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents in the tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, her deputy John Negroponte and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have visited the countries since the attacks.
Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher met yesterday with officials in New Delhi and said Pakistan had made a “promising start” in probing the attacks though hasn’t eliminated the threat from militants, Doordarshan reported.
“The goal that we all have Nike Air Force 1 Midis to make sure that this cannot happen again,” the broadcaster cited Boucher as saying.
The Mumbai attacks, which left 164 people dead, have strained ties between India and Pakistan and interrupted a five-year peace process. They have fought three wars since independence in 1947, two over the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Indian Demands
While it has arrested several Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders, Pakistan has rejected Indian demands to extradite suspects.
Lashkar’s alleged role is sensitive for Pakistan because the group received weapons and logistical support from the main intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate, for attacks in Indian-controlled Kashmir in the 1990s, according to Indian andU.S. officials and independent Pakistani analysts.
Although formally banning Lashkar Shox Allegria Glowand several other jihadist groups in 2002, it never prosecuted their leaders, who remained active, according to Hassan Abbas, a former senior Pakistani police official who is now a researcher Shox FSMon Pakistani affairs at Harvard University. Memo to Caroline: Act Less Bouvier and More Triborough
Memo to Caroline: Act Less Bouvier and More Triborough
Maybe Caroline Kennedy’s bid to become New York’s junior senator would be an easier sell all around if the city hadn’t
just renamed the Triborough Bridge for her Uncle Bobby.
A friend who’s a die-hard Yankees fan recently confessed that she had been raised to resist all thingsShox Legend Trainer Boston, starting with
the Red Sox but extending to Cape Cod, baked beans and, yes, the Kennedy clan. The new Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, named for an
admirable public servant who was nonetheless a carpetbagger, was bad enough. Now the United States Senate seat, too?
You have to look harder every day to find someone who does not have a nit to pick on Ms. Kennedy’s non-campaign — she’s
not qualified, she didn’t vote in numerous primary elections, she’s a tool of the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-
independent mayor, she throws “you know” around with all the confidence Shox VCof a sullen 17-year-old trying to explain why she
missed curfew.
It’s tempting, if only as an exercise, to scout around for some kind of feminist argument that might explain the
increasingly loud resistance to Ms. Kennedy, who does, after all, offer a high-profile persona, deep financial resources and
a sound intellect. (Also, no small thing these days, she seems unlikely to end up with a high-priced prostitute or a wallet
full of ill-gotten cash.)
A thought experiment: Imagine a happier alternative universe in which Ms. Kennedy’s brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., had not
died in a plane crash, but ran a glossy political magazine for several years, actively raised some children, served on a
bunch of boards and then decided, at age 50 or so, to seek public office. Wouldn’t his late-in-life turn to electoral
politics seem like the natural order of things, a long-awaited but ultimately inevitable Nike Shox Explodinetour of duty that Democrats would
universally embrace?
The hypothetical comparison, of course, goes only so far: John Jr. had not just the name of a celebrity, but the warmth and
charisma of one. By contrast, Ms. Kennedy is said to have a sarcastic charm, but it eludes many in casual encounters. On a
recent visit to the Montgomery County Democratic headquarters, a place so inclined to like her that its members had all but
papered the walls of their conference room with photos of her family, she seemed more flummoxed by their enthusiasm than
capable of turning it into a slam-dunk feel-good experience.
There may be something more specific to the family that is holding Ms. Kennedy back — a vague collective longing for her to
maintain the role that she has held for so long as the dignified, tasteful Kennedy, the one who co-authored classy books
about civil rights but never made much of a fuss about them, who compiled an anthology of Shox Basketball poetry her mother loved and another
about Christmas, acting as a philanthropist and attending the occasional literary lunch. Her appeal on behalf of Barack Obama
during the primaries was effective because she was seen as someone outside the political maelstrom; now that she’s entered
it, she may have disappointed those who wanted, from her, more Jackie than Jack.
But if she is going to enter the fray, she would probably do well to show a little more Kennedy grit, a little less Bouvier
gracious distance. Not everyone is cut out to effuse, but she could start taking some risks to let the public know where she
stands and whereShox 2:40 her thinking starts. (Note to Caroline: Go easy on “as a mother” when asked how you prepared for the job;
can you imagine any male candidate citing fatherhood as résumé fodder for the Senate?)
Many seem to have written off her experience as vice chairwoman of New York’s Fund for Public Schools as glorified P.T.A.-
type activity. But the role may be more substantive than it sounds. The fund is at the heart of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s
efforts to transform the city schools, the engine that makes possible some of his most controversial experiments, like
creating cash incentives for students to score high on standardized tests. Instead of air maxticking off lines of her résumé in the
most general terms, Ms. Kennedy would fare better laying out specifics about her philosophy on education, even if it meant
staking out some thorny positions on those cash incentives and merit pay for teachers.
With Ms. Kennedy’s support, the Bloomberg administration has made a fair playing field a clear goal of its education
overhaul: centralizing admissions and revamping gifted programs, among other things, in hopes of changing a system in which
someone with connections and a big bank account could charm his or her child’s way into a choice public school at the
expense of those who didn’t even know they were supposed to be trying.
MS. KENNEDY’S call to Gov. David A. air maxPaterson last month inviting him to consider her for the seat that is expected to be
vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton was a little bit like one of her exceptionally well-connected neighbors phoning up the
principal of Public School 6 on the Upper East Side midway through the school year because she’d heard a fourth grader was
moving away — might her child possibly find a seat? Understood: They’d have one heck of a school auction that year.
Those without connections may have a hard time swallowing her promises to labor on their behalf, given that her path to the
Senate seems to tread on their one ticket up: meritocracy.
Even some of Robert F. Kennedy’s greatest admirers might miss calling his bridge the Triborough —Cheap Air Jordan it was a name that
described, helpfully, exactly what it was. Not a glamorous name, a utilitarian one. Show us a little more Triborough, a
little less Kennedy, and Caroline might be on a bridge to somewhere.
