What is a blog?

In its most basic definition, a blog is a frequently updated website, with entries appearing in chronological order – most recent on top.

 Blogs can be anything from personal diaries, to resources on specific topics, to ranting spaces… whatever you want it to be. The differences between blogs and regular websites is that blogs allow comments and feedback on individual entries (posts), and they are much more interactive and networked than websites.

What if I don't want to be listed in the directory?

If you don't want to list your blog in Al Bawaba Blogs directory, people will not be able to find your blog unless you give them the exact URL address. 

To hide your blog from the directory, login to your blog account and go to "Settings." Under "Blog Profile,” un-check the box under “Listing in Blog Directories.”

What is a URL?
A URL is the address you type in the address bar to access any website. Examples of a URL are www.albawaba.com, or in the case of blogs http://blogs.albawaba.com/username.

Can I change my blog title?
Yes. You can always change your blog title without affecting your blog. Just login to your blog account, go to "Settings" and then to "Blog Profile" and type the new title of your blog.

Can I change my blog URL?
No. That is why you need to be careful with the one you pick, since changing it requires the process of getting an entirely new blog.

How do I start publishing?

When you login to your blog account, your blog’s Dashboard will appear. Click on the big button that reads “Manage Your Blog” and you will automatically be redirected to write a new post.

What is the category option when publishing a new post?

When you write a post, it is automatically listed under the default category “General.” Categories make it easier to access your old posts and help your readers find what they are looking for. All categories are displayed in your blog’s sidebar.

You can add new categories after logging in to your blog account and going to “Posts” and then to “Categories.”

Can a post be published under more than one category?
Yes. You can publish any post under several categories simply by checking the boxes next to the category names when you write your post.

What's the difference between "Blog Category" in the Blog Profile and "Categories" in the New Post?

Under "Settings" >> "Blog Profile," you can change the categories that describe your blog in Al Bawaba directory. People often search for blogs that fall under certain categories to read them.

Under "Posts" >> "New Post," you can list your individual posts under certain categories inside your blog. This makes it easier for your readers to decide what to read.

What is the "Show Extended Text Box" option?

In order to avoid having very long posts on your blog's main page, you can type the text that will appear in the main page in the first box under "New Post." After you write the first half of your post, write the second half in the Extended Text Box.

Your readers will be able to read the whole post after clicking on the "Read More" which is automatically inserted in your post.

Can I add other formats, like audio, video, or a document, inside my post?
Yes. You can upload documents, PDF files, audio, video, and images under "Files & Photos." You can then select to include any of these in the post while writing it by clicking on the "Insert Resource/Album" icon in your rich text editor.

Is there a maximum file size?
Yes. You can only upload files that have the maximum size of 2 MB.

How do I add a photo to my profile?

To add a picture to your profile, follow these steps:

Log in to your Al Bawaba Blogs account by providing your username and password

Click on “Manage your blog” and access the administrative area

From the upper tabs in this screen, click on Files & Photos

Click on New File and upload the picture you want from your computer to your blog’s folders

Once the picture is uploaded to your folders, go to the upper tab Settings

Click on User Profile

In the User Profile page, you will find a picture preview. To change your picture, click on the word Choose under the preview

You will receive a pop-up screen that contains your folders. Click on the folder where you uploaded the picture

Choose the picture you want to use for your profile

Once done, you will return to the User Profile page. To save the changes, click on Update button in the lower right end of the page

What if I don't want to have a profile?

Under "Settings" >> "User Profile," you can choose to write as much as you want about yourself in the space provided under "Your bio." Usually this means writing your age, your occupation, your country, and your interests. 

You can also choose to skip this by not filling any information in the space provided under "Your bio."

What is a feed?
A feed is constantly updated information of what has been posted or commented on your blog. It's the posts you write but without the design.

How do I create a feed?
Feeds for your blog are created automatically when your posts change or when the comments change.

Why are feeds useful?
Some people have feed readers, so if they like what you write, they can subscribe to your feed and find out automatically every time you update. Also, specialized blog sites like communities, directories, and aggregators read the feeds of the blogs listed in them. This gives your blog more exposure and brings you more readers.

How are my posts archived?
Your posts are archived in a monthly order and according to the categories you create and both appear on the sidebar.

Is there a limit to the archive?
No. The limit of 100 MB is only for the uploaded files.

Why should I create categories for my post?
This helps your readers find the topics that interest them and dig up older posts that you published. When somebody finds your blog, it is highly unlikely that they will have the time or patience to go through the monthly archive and read older posts. By having categories, you help them access the good stuff you have written in the past which might be of interest to them.

Can I publish posts but not have them appear on the main page?

Yes. You can create specific categories and choose not to have them appear on the main page. This works if you occasionally like to post some very technical stuff, code perhaps, or music notes. 

To hide some of your categories, go to "Posts" and then to "Categories." There you will find a list of all the categories you created. Click on the Edit icon that appears under Actions and you will enter the category properties. From there, un-check the box under "Show in front page."

Can I disable comments on certain posts?

Yes. You can always decide if you want readers to comment on a certain post or not.  

To disable comments on a certain post, login to your blog account and you will be directed to write a new post. Under "Comments" to the right of the screen, un-check "Enable comments."

How can I moderate comments?

You can easily moderate incoming comments in your Al Bawaba Blog. To do that, first login to your account and go to “Settings” then to “Blog Settings.” From there, check the box next to “Enable Comment Moderation” and you are done!

All comments that you receive after you enable comment moderation will not be published unless you approve them.

Can I be notified when new comments are added to a post?
Yes. Before publishing your post, check the box next to "Notification of new comment" and this way you will be notified by email every time a comment is added to this particular post.

Can I change my template without affecting any of the other settings?
Yes. Under "Settings", you can go to "Theme Settings" and select a new template any time you want. This will not affect     the links, categories, or resources that you have added before.

Can I customize my own template?

How do I add pictures to my post?
To add pictures to your post, click on the "Insert Resource/Album" icon and you will get a popup screen that allows you to easily upload pictures of files from your PC, your folders, or the web.

Can I create albums for my photo collections on my blog without the help of an external service?
Yes. Al Bawaba gives you 100 MB of space and the option to create folders and subfolders to arrange your photos. This means that you can have all your albums on your blog without using external photo hosting and sharing services.

How do I edit the links on the sidebar?
Login to your blog account and go to "Links." There you will access all the links you created. To edit a link, click on the Edit icon to the right. You will then be prompted to the link's properties where you can change them as you want.

Can I organize my sidebar links in different categories?

Yes. To organize your links in different categories, login to your blog account and then click on "Links." From there, go to "New Link Category" to create as many link categories as you want.

When you create link categories, you can easily list your links under them. To do that, go to "Links" and click on the Edit icon to the right. The link's properties will appear and you can choose the category that you want to list it under.

What is the Files & Photos tab?
The Files & Photos tab allows you to upload files, video, audio, charts, and pictures to your blog. It also lets you arrange them in folders and subfolders to create photo albums, music albums, and any other kind of albums you want.

Can I create folders inside other folders?
Yes. When you create a new folder, you can put it inside another folder you created previously by choosing the "Parent Folder."

How do I know that people are reading my blog?
Al Bawaba Blogs provides you with a tracking system to give you statistics about how many people view your blog, and how many people read your posts. You can even get this information for each, and you can find out how people were referred to your blog.
