Blizzard Entertainment says the number of subscribers for its juggernaut multiplayer game, World of Warcraft, has reached 10 million.
Blizzard announced Tuesday that its World of Warcraft (WOW) continues to be the largest internationally played Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in terms of monthly subscribers.
Asia yields over five and a half million players and North America over two and a half million; more than two million Europeans play WOW, the company said in a statement.
Blizzard also noted that the term 'subscriber' encompasses those who have paid a subscription fee averaging $15 per month, stressing that the tally does not include expired or canceled subscriptions, or those playing under free promotional accounts.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime described the enthusiasm and support that gamers have shown for WOW as a 'very gratifying' factor for keeping the game up-to-date.
The Warcraft brand was first introduced in 1994. World of Warcraft was launched in 2001; it has been continuously modified ever since due to its storming success.
