World of Warcraft Breaks MMORPG Milestone

Boston (eCanadaNow) - The massively multiplayer online role-playing game from Blizzard, World of Warcraft, has broken a major milestone with over 10 million active subscribers.

Blizzard made the announcement this week that they now have over 10 million subscribers.

Asia has the biggest majority of the 10 million as they make up 5.5 million users.  North America consists of 2.5 million users and Europe has 2 million.

World of Warcraft is available in seven languages with a Russian version on the way.

It released on November 23, 2004.

The game costs anywhere from $13 to $24 per month to play.

The game will only grow more with the second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, nearing release.

World of Warcraft boasts 10M subscribers

Blizzard Entertainment says the number of subscribers for its juggernaut multiplayer game, World of Warcraft, has reached 10 million.

Blizzard announced Tuesday that its World of Warcraft (WOW) continues to be the largest internationally played Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in terms of monthly subscribers.

Asia yields over five and a half million players and North America over two and a half million; more than two million Europeans play WOW, the company said in a statement.

Blizzard also noted that the term 'subscriber' encompasses those who have paid a subscription fee averaging $15 per month, stressing that the tally does not include expired or canceled subscriptions, or those playing under free promotional accounts.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime described the enthusiasm and support that gamers have shown for WOW as a 'very gratifying' factor for keeping the game up-to-date.

The Warcraft brand was first introduced in 1994. World of Warcraft was launched in 2001; it has been continuously modified ever since due to its storming success.

wow Leveling vs Gold Making

You've been playing World of Warcraft for a few weeks or months and by now you've already decided that trying to find the best strategies by yourself is a bit more time-consuming than you had anticipated. So you've decided to get your hands on a WoW strategy guide. The problem is, which one do you get first? After all, you want to level to 70 fast and get llots more gold

But there just no way you  shelling out dough for two guides at once. So which one do you pick?

I personally would make a Warcraft leveling guide my first choice. While the WoW gold guides definitely provide tips on farming gold even with lower level characters, all the best gold making methods can only be done by higher level characters. So if you start with a 1-70 Leveling Guide, you can launch your character up into the 50th level or so before even spending all that much time trying to get more gold.

Once you leveled your character into the mid-50s, it's time to get a WoW gold guide and start implementing those strategies along with your leveling game. Then you level hit 70 with a lot more gold in your bag.

Can you use a gold guide at the lower levels?

Sure, you can. In fact, they  a great source of tips for making gold even for low level characters. When it comes down to it, whether you choose one type of guide over another ultimately depends on what your own goals for playing are. I suggest a leveling guide on the assumption that you want to level to 70 as quickly as possible. But if your intention is to amass as much gold as possible and you  more interested in manipulating the in-game economy and becoming a master of the Warcraft Auction Houses, then maybe you don care if it takes you a few months to get to 70, especially if by the time you get there you have tons of loot. In that case, of course, a gold guide makes much more sense for you.

One of the things I like to say, and I say it again now, is that World of Warcraft is really what you want it to be. It can be a game in which you join raiding parties and socialize with your friends as you kill mobs; it can be a game in which you fine tune your capitalist instincts by becoming an Auction House mogul who other characters buy everything they need from; or it can be a game which you play almost entirely by yourself as you race your own best times or just wander off to explore. And those are just some of your options for playing and not even close to all of them.

An oldie that's still a goodie

The phrases "5-year-old games" and "massively multiplayer" don't often occur in the same sentence, unless the sentence is: "There aren't very many decent 5-year-old massively multiplayer games."

One of those rare beasts is EVE Online, a world in which thousands of players fly ships, form corporations, mine, trade and wage war on each other.

Rarer still is a game that, after five years of graphics technology advancements, still impresses with its visuals. But thanks to a major face-lift, EVE now looks and plays like new.

EVE Online is not a well-known title. Icelandic developer CCP claims just shy of a quarter-million subscribers compared with the 9 million-odd people playing the popular World of Warcraft.

Still, EVE has not just staying power, but is getting better all the time. And the subscribers keep trickling in. The reasons EVE continues to thrive are many.

At the top of the list is its sheer scale. One of the joys of online gaming is exploration, and that means having lots and lots of places to go. EVE has 5,000 solar systems' worth.

Compound the game's explorability with the eye-popping visuals produced by the rewritten graphics engine, and this space game turns into a space experience.

Then there's the constant sense of impending doom. EVE is unusual in that it has few rules. Players can attack other players anytime they like.

Finally, there's the skill system. Skill advancement is not determined by completing tasks or killing things, as it is in other games, but by training skills over time. Players can train one skill at a time, even while offline, which allows them to progress in the game even when they can't play for days or weeks at a stretch.

Of course, EVE doesn't get everything right.

It's not exactly accessible to new players. After a thorough and very helpful tutorial, the game gets free-form fast, and it's tough to figure out what to do next. And there's the other thing. New players just can't compete with long-time players. An attraction of EVE is also its undoing: Those who've trained skills for years are untouchable by newer players.

The first months of play will likely be spent hauling cargo while their skills reach a level high enough to mine for ore profitably or survive warfare.

In addition to the latest content upgrades and improved visuals, CCP has just hammered out a deal to distribute EVE via Steam, a digital distribution platform. If you already have Steam installed, look for that to show up as an option very soon, or get it directly from CCP at www.eve-online.com.

Guild Banks, Battlemasters, Titles, WotLK PvP

Tigole is providing us with noteworthy blue posts on 2.4, future guild bank improvements and WotLK.
Guild Banks: Guild master might be able to set prices for items (gold)
We've been exploring ideas about letting guild masters set prices for items from the guild bank. We hope to get some cool guild bank improvements in over time.
Patch 2.4: Battlemasters and collision (gold)
In 2.4, the Battlemasters are standing on platforms with collision around them.
We're also working on a better solution for Wrath of the Lich King.
WotLK: Plans to incorporate new titles (gold)
We want titles to be meaningful in WoW and not commonplace. Our goal is to release more titles sparingly, so that the titles carry weight with other players. We do have a lot of plans for some new systems incoporating titles in Wrath of the Lich King. More information will be coming out on that soon.
Also, we feel like we have to be careful about rewarding people for behavior that might not be the best game experience. As much as everyone loves killing Murlocs, I feel like I have a moral and social responsibility not to encourage you to grind out 10,000 Murloc kills.
World PvP: Lake Wintergrasp and server wide buff (gold)
Why can't you make it so that cities like Halaa (well, pick another one, not Halaa) give a server wide buff to players, if it is controlled by your faction?
That would provide an incentive for players to capture and hold it. For example, a 3% increase in damage while the city is held or something.
Just having zone specific buffs was a good start, but it needs to be more epic than that.
That's a cool idea. Maybe we'll do something like that with Lake Wintergrasp.
