Canon Digital IXUS 70 Digital Camera Review

The Canon Powershot SD1000 / Canon Digital IXUS 70 is one of the slimmest Canon Digital IXUS cameras measuring just 19.4mm wide, and is available in two different colours: Silver and Black or Silver. The IXUS 70 is a 7.1 megapixel digital camera with a 2.5" screen, and a 3x optical zoom lens. The 3x optical zoom lens is equivalent to 35– 105 mm on a 35mm camera. The Canon Digital IXUS 70 battery is available from around £175 this makes it average to good value for money for an ultra compact 7 megapixel digital camera. The camera has a 640x480 30fps video mode with sound. The camera is very compact and has a metal body with a more traditional design, inspired by the original IXUS. The IXUS 70 measures: 85.9 x 53.5 x 19.4mm (excluding protrusions), and weighs approx. 125g excluding batteries and media.

One of my favourite photos is the outdoor portrait. Face detection software is built into the camera. Just how much difference this makes is difficult to judge, but the face is certainly in sharp focus and the colours have a natural feel to them.

Another area where I think Canon have an edge is the way they are able to retain colour in a photo when the flash is being used. This point is illustrated in both the indoor portrait and extreme lowlight tests. Both shots have plenty of colour in them. Sharpness levels are also very good. The only downside is the amount of red eye that shows up in the indoor portrait. This gave me the chance to try out the built in red eye correction software and it did a fairly good job of removing the problem.

With a score of 1429 for sharpness, this model produces some relatively sharp pictures. There was a little fringing evident in our test shots, but that is typical from 7.1 megapixel, compact models, and it won't be noticeable in small and medium sized prints. There was also little in the way of chromatic aberration to mar the edges of the shot, with Imatest giving the Digital IXUS 70 battery a score of 0.077%. This is a little lower than many other models, and our test shots reflected this, with sharp, well defined edges even towards the corners of our shots. There was a little haloing in areas of high contrast however, which may be noticeable in some pictures.

In our colour tests, as usual, Canon has got it right with this model, the IXUS 70 scoring 6.96. Anything below 7 is an excellent result. As usual with consumer cameras, colours were very slightly oversaturated, with red being the biggest culprit. However this wasn't at all visible in our test shots, and users will be pleased with this model's colour reproduction.

In terms of image noise, the unit achieved more moderate results of 0.86% at ISO 100. This is about an average result, which indicates good but not outstanding performance canon nb-4l battery. Our shots at this level exhibited some minor noise, but it was extremely fine and won't be problematic at most magnifications. Only when you start making big enlargements will you begin to notice it. The noise scaled relatively well as we increased the sensitivity. It was acceptable up to ISO 400, but at ISO 800 it took a sharp jump upwards, so we'd recommend sticking to a lower setting if you want clean shots.

Canon’s design-driven IXUS compact range has a new eye-catching addition in the IXUS 70, but is its breathtaking design worthy of a price normally paid for a better specified compact? Image quality is consistent over a range of subjects indoors and out and noise is generally low throughout the images taken.

The new IXUS lacks the headline grabbing spec of other compacts in its price bracket; both its 7.1MP sensor and 35-105mm equivalent 3x optical zoom are below many of its rivals NIKON EN-EL8 battery. The maximum ISO 1600 is adequate, and control is offered beyond mere ‘point-and-shoot’ capabilities in ‘Long Shutter mode’, yet full control over aperture and shutter speed is absent.

The camera is beautifully designed, with a retro-rectangular all metal body reminiscent of classic IXUS designs and a clear 2.5in LCD and small viewfinder present on the back. Build quality is, on the whole, fantastic; you can feel excellence oozing from every screw.

In use, the IXUS 70’s handling echoes the quality of its build. Its nine-point AiAF system focuses briskly, contributing to an impressive overall operational speed. The ‘Colour-Swap’ feature is also worthy of note, allowing colour highlighting normally only accessible through Photoshop.

The IXUS 70 has, to say the least, a striking design. Apparently modelled after the original IXUS APS film camera, its shape is a very minimalist plain rectangle, with the lens, the monitor screen and all the rear panel controls mounted smoothly flush with the body. People to whom I showed the camera while I was testing it were divided pretty evenly between those who though it looked cool and stylish, and those who thought it was ugly and boring, which just goes to show that there’s no pleasing everyone. Personally I really like the way it looks, but to be fair the design does cause one or two minor problems. For one thing, trying to operate the controls in the dark is very difficult, because their flat shape makes them almost impossible to find by touch. Another troublesome design feature which has, I suspect, only been included for its cosmetic effect, is the optical viewfinder SONY NP-FS11 battery. A decent optical viewfinder is a real advantage, especially when bright sunlight makes your monitor screen difficult to use, but the viewfinder on the IXUS 70 is so small and fiddly that it’s pretty much useless.

Practical Tips On How to Find A Cheap Digital Camera

Despite what some critics say, modern science and technology do have their advantages. Photography is one of the many fields that benefited from its advancements. In the old days, photographers used actual bulbs for camera flash. Only photographers carry cameras because lugging them around is not really fashionable at that time. Discoveries and development of cameras produced the digital camera, wherein taking pictures is not so cumbersome anymore. It is less expensive because you can see the images before printing them so you could choose what to actually print. The kodak klic-7001 battery could also be uploaded to your computer for storage and further manipulations. These days, it not unusual to carry a compact digital camera. Its perfect for capturing those random wacky moments with your friends.

The only problem it seems is finding a cheap digital camera. Can you even find one? Because of the features that are offered by digital cameras, they are often costly. That is enough to make any person have second thoughts about buying one. But for someone who considers photography a passion, affordability is relative. You just have to set a budget before buying a camera. You can find a cheap canon powershot sd1000 battery that is just right for you if you look hard enough. Do not buy one that is more than you can afford, even if it has a lot of features. Make sure that you can actually use these features so that you can get your moneys worth.

To find the right cheap digital camera, think about your lifestyle and the use of your camera. Do you plan to spend a lot of time taking pictures or do you just want something small that can fit in your bag? If you are still a beginner, do not buy a high-end professional canon nb-5l battery just for the assurance of image quality and zoom performance. Instead, buy a cheap digital camera that is compact but has powerful features and easy to carry around. Explore the basics before cashing out on expensive professional cameras.

Though these are very important points to ponder when buying a cheap digital camera, you also have to consider the performance and features of your camera. Check the megapixels, zoom capability, image quality, type of media and canon nb-7l battery. These are actually features that digital cameras highlight in advertisements.

- Megapixels – Although megapixels play a major role in the total quality of your photo, they are not the be-all and end-all of digital cameras. Salespeople like to throw this information to you because it promises clearer images. But this is just one factor that comprises your digital camera. You have to check the megapixels quality. Most image sensors can only find certain hues like red, blue and green. They cant detect all three at the same time.

- Zoom Capability – The zoom capability is another feature which you might want to match with your needs. You have seen advertisements like 10x digital zoom or 5x zoom capability. While it is true, advertisers often forget to highlight optical zoom, which is actually more important. The difference is that with digital zoom, your image gets broken into small pixels if you enlarge it on your computer. If your camera has high optical zoom, you would not see pixelated images if you enlarge the klic-7001 battery.

- Image quality – To find out if the image quality suits you, check the quality of your image after you take a picture. Is it fuzzy or pixelated? Sharpness of colors is very important.

- Type of Media – This is the memory of your digital camera. Find a memory card or stick that is compatible with your other equipment so it is easier to upload your images.

- Type of Battery – If you are a field photographer, you would probably need longer stand-by time compared to those who take photos in a gallery or a studio. See to it that your cheap digital camera does not require expensive batteries or that it allows rechargeable fujifilm np-80 battery.

These points would help you decide on what kind of cheap digital camera to buy. Like what was mentioned earlier, affordability is relative for the passionate photographer. Find your niche by choosing the best but cheap digital camera.

Canon PowerShot G10

 canon powershot g10

Canon’s PowerShot G10 is the latest model in the company’s flagship G-series, designed to satisfy the demands of enthusiasts who want a powerful compact or a pocketable backup to a DSLR. Announced in September 2008, it’s the successor to the popular PowerShot G9 and retains a number of its key specifications including full manual exposure control, a flash hotshoe, RAW recording, and a retro-styled body – albeit with some control enhancements.

The PowerShot G10’s headline feature is a new lens with a 5x optical range that’s equivalent to 28-140mm. This may be shorter than the 6x range of its predecessor, but crucially equips the canon powershot g10 battery with wider angle coverage of 28mm compared to 35mm. This better-equips the G10 when faced with expansive landscapes, large buildings, cramped interiors or big group shots.

Inevitably there’s been a boost in resolution from 12.1 to 14.7 megapixels, making the G10 one of the highest resolution compacts on the market. To make the most of the detail captured, the G10 importantly retains the RAW recording facility of its predecessor – this is a crucial specification for enthusiasts and it’s the only non-DSLR in Canon’s current range to offer it.

Handling the number crunching is Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 processor which brings a number of enhancements to the canon nb-7l battery, including more efficient H.264 compression for video (albeit still in standard definition), improved face detection, a new self-timer option which exploits face detection to wait for the photographer to enter the frame, motion detection, a new Servo AF mode, and i-Contrast which can boost shadow areas in images.

The screen remains a 3in model, but Canon’s upgraded the resolution from 230k to 460k pixels, allowing it to display much finer detail in composition and playback, along with allowing much smoother menu fonts. The new screen also has a very wide viewing angle.

The retro-styled body remains essentially the same as the earlier G9, but there’s some control changes on the upper panel with the dedicated ISO dial shifting to the right, where it’s now positioned under a smaller mode dial in a two-tier arrangement. The vacated area on the upper left side is now home to a new exposure compensation dial. Along with the thumb wheel on the rear, these large and satisfyingly tactile controls make the G10 quick and easy to operate. As before, the canon powershot g10 battery also features full PASM modes for manual control over exposure.

Completing the picture as mentioned earlier is a flash hotshoe, which allows the G10 to use selected Canon Speedlite flashguns, and if you mount the Speedlite 430EX II or 580EX II models, you can even enjoy the same built-in control over them as Canon’s DSLRs.

So the new PowerShot G10 may still not feature the f2.0 lens or flip-out screen of earlier G-series generations, nor does it boast HD video recording or any kind of HD output as seen on rival compacts from Panasonic, but with full manual control, wide angle coverage, high resolution, a flash hotshoe, RAW recording and a great-looking screen, it still represents a compelling prospect for enthusiasts.

In our Canon PowerShot G10 review we’ll examine the new features and performance of the camera, comparing it to its predecessor and key rivals like the Panasonic Lumix LX3. In our image quality section we’ll also see how it measures-up against a DSLR, along with a lower-end compact in Canon’s range to see just how good the combination of its new high resolution sensor and DIGIC 4 processor really are.

And as always, for a demonstration of its key features, check out our Canon PowerShot G10 video tour. Ultimately, can the PowerShot G10 satisfy the demands of enthusiasts and those wanting a pocketable alternative to a DSLR? Find out over the following pages.

Following our convention of using default factory and best quality JPEG settings to test cameras unless otherwise stated, the canon nb-7l battery was set Large SuperFine quality, Auto White Balance, Evaluative Metering and with 'My Colours' switched off (the default setting for contrast, saturation and sharpening).

Dell Inspiron 6400 Review

If the idea of a desktop replacement machine that truly has five hours of dell inspiron 6400 battery life watching DVD’s interests you then this could well be for you. Yes 3 DVD’s in a row.

While watching three DVD's in a row may not be what everyone wants - or needs - running a DVD tends to put a fair amount of stress on a laptop battery and often it's a struggle to get one DVD watched but I managed to watch three on this Dell laptop one Sunday afternoon, I had only intended two as that would surely drain the battery but it still had 38% left after the second and while it was down to single digits by the time the third was finished it did it and the total running time was 299 minutes so with the DVD swaps it's over five hours. My only gripe the default brightness/contrast were a little dark for my eyes. In normal use I got close to seven hours of use.

The Dell Inspiron 6400 is 36x27x4cm and weights a tad under 3kilos. It has a 15.4inch screen with display resolution of 1680x1050 that I am told is WSXGA+. The fonts looked a little strange but were very readable. Displaying folders gave the icons a rather larger separation but this was just a difference and not a problem.

There is a full 11cm from the front of the unit to the keyboard and on this model it is 88 keys the alpha and numeric keys are full size with only the function keys being reduced. Slightly left of centre is a rather nice trackpad. Behind the keyboard are two buttons on/off and media along with five LED's and the hinge area that shows through when the case is shut has three further LED's.

The unit ships with a 60GB hard disc (actual 54.5GB) and 512MB or RAM with a minimum of 8MB used for graphics. However there are other options.

The front edge has seven push buttons for controlling volume and video, either side of this are the two quite decent speakers. The right side has an Express Card Slot (still only a very few devices to support this), SD/MMC card slot, headphone and external microphone ports, two USB2 ports and a four pin FireWire port. The rear has AC power input, LAN and modem ports, two further USB2ports, external monitor connector and TV output. There is a fan outlet with rather large openings that may just fit a little finger, certainly easy enough to push something into. The left side has the DVD/CD drive.

The unit supports both Bluetooth and Wireless. Bootup is around a minute while shutdown is 15 seconds, should you close the case the screen is blanked but rapidly returns to where you left off when reopened. Returning to DVD's for one more mention the CyberLink Power DVD software works very well and full screen viewing is a pleasure as the resolution works well for display.

It comes with Microsoft XP Home, McAfee security and anti virus, Microsoft Works and some Sonic and Corel software. Unfortunately some of these are only limited time products.

I find the Dell website a little hard to work out, what is standard and what is extra. This only becomes clear when you configure at the check out. At the time of writing there is an Inspiron E1505 model for a very reasonable £599 including VAT and delivery. However it would have - as far as I can tell - 1280x800 display and probably a smaller battery as the claim for the standard battery is 313minutes and I got over 420 minutes in 'normal' use. Working out if you want these extras and their cost is the task that takes a while.

Dell Vostro 1400, 1500 and 1700 Laptops
In WorldBench 6 the Vostro 1400 scored 82, a very decent result, especially for a business unit. The battery test was also very impressive. In our DVD rundown test the Vostro 1400 battery lasted 195 minutes, well beyond the average. As this is a worst-case scenario test we expect the Dell Vostro 1400 will last longer under normal usage conditions. Encoding tests also showed good results, a testament to the CPU. Encoding 53 minutes worth of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files took just 79 seconds in iTunes and 118 seconds in Cdex.

The Dell Vostro 1400 battery is one of three Dell Vostro notebooks. Also in the range are the 15in Dell Vostro 1500 and Dell Vostro 1000 notebooks.

This Dell Vostro 1400 with Windows XP, 14.1 in screen, bought new in January of 2008. It has 1GB Memory and 160GB Hard Drive. I have not had any problems with it, it has some added software but it still has plenty of memory. just give me an email if interested. I have the 1505 Wireless card, Instaled Security Software. I also have the 9-cell Battery which runs for about 6 Hours on the dell Vostro 1400 laptop battery. It is nice all around and has many nice additions. The bottom left Control button and Function key have started to stick lately, they are still usuable. great computer for a student or a home computer.

Dell Latitude X300 series Review

Since Dell has removed their ultraportable Inspiron notebook, the Latitude X300 Series is now their only ultraportable currently available. Since the Latitude series is designed for business use, many of the features are different than what an average consumer may want.

Powering the X300 is the Pentium M 738 (1.4 GHz) processor. This is a very fast mobile processor that still has a good overall battery life. Matched up with this is 256MB of PC2100 DDR memory. This is really the minimum amount of memory that is required to run the Windows XP Professional operating system.

Storage on the system is pretty good. While the system does not have an internal optical drive, it does have a D-Bay external drive that comes with a 24x CD-RW Combo drive. An optional media base is also available that supports more features. The hard drive is an average size 30GB unit.

The X300 has a 12.1″ LCD display that is average size for the ultraportable market. It also features the very standardized Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics. This does use up a section of the system memory for graphics and can impact the system with its limited memory size.

One area of concern is the battery life. The dell latitude x300 series battery comes with a standard 28WHr lithium-ion battery pack that has a limited amount of life with the fairly powerful processor. An extended battery is available for longer life, but it also adds extra weight. Since the X300 is also geared towards businesses, it also lacks a standard software package.

The 3-pound Dell Latitude X300 provides almost everything you could want in an ultraportable notebook. The only drawbacks are smallish typing keys and a standard battery.

The X300 offers several ways to configure for the road. For back-and-forth commuting, the standard battery keeps weight down but delivers only 2 hours 20 minutes of life. We would opt for the $129 extended battery, which adds half a pound to the weight but delivers a more satisfying 5:50 of runtime. That puts the X300 in the same league as the class-leading IBM ThinkPad X31 Series with its extended battery. Dell’s $199 MediaBase can house a second battery as well as the included optical drive.

In case the fonts are too small on the crisp 12.1-inch screen, Dell’s QuickSet utility handles font scaling beyond what Windows XP offers. The key pitch is 18 mm, which is 95 percent the size of standard desktop key spacing. That’s good for an ultraportable this small, although IBM and HP were able to cram 19-mm keyboards into just slightly larger machines.

The 1.2-GHz Pentium M machine’s Winstone performance was good. Given the margin of error on our tests, we can say the speed was on a par with that of the 1.6-GHz HP Compaq Business Notebook nc4000. The X300’s extra RAM (640MB versus 256MB) no doubt helped here.

Our test unit came with the built-in Broadcom 802.11b/g wireless solution. (An Intel 802.11b card is available for users who want a Centrino solution, though you’d be spending the same money and giving up 802.11g connectivity.) Wireless performance was good, and the X300 was still receiving a signal at 160 feet from our access point.

For corporate users, Dell offers its OpenManage Client Adminstrator management suite and ImageWatch tools for deploying a common operating system and applications across Dell systems.

  • Building on the success of its Latitude X200 ultraportable, Dell has responded to both user feedback and technology advances with a revamped version: the Latitude X300. With a new processor, chipset, and wireless technology, Dell’s shiny Mini-Me and its bottom-mounted docking station look like they’re good to go.

Upside: Thanks to a Pentium M processor and an Intel 855 chipset, the Latitude X300 should run faster and last longer than its predecessor. It also offers many Dell- or Intel-branded wireless-networking options, including 802.11b, 802.11b/g, and 802.11a/b/g standards. (Choosing the Intel Pro wireless adapter makes this an Intel Centrino notebook.) Finally, the dell  Latitude X300 series battery uses standard Latitude D-series external USB 2.0 storage modules instead of the less-convenient Latitude X200’s proprietary external modules.

Downside: The Latitude X300 is slightly larger than its predecessor, though it still weighs 1.36kg (sans the AC adapter). The smallish 12.1-inch display, with a native resolution of 1,024×768 pixels, is a bit rough on aging eyes, but that’s a price you pay with any notebook this small.

Outlook: The Latitude X300 series battery is a significant improvement over the Latitude X200. Dell Australia estimates that the Latitude X300 will begin shipping from August 11. Check back soon for a full review.

In terms of performance, the Digital Ixus 980 IS was very good, with fine detail, contrast and colour reproduction. So did the extra pixels make a difference to the picture quality? Yes, but we suspect that the Digic 4 processor played a bigger role. The iContrast feature is nice to have, but there was little need to deploy it, either while shooting live or in post-production.

Better than its predecessors
In terms of noise, those extra pixels didn’t seem to have had an adverse effect on the amount of noise generated, which must be down to some hard work by the Digic 4. As expected, noise begins to become apparent around ISO 400, but even at 800, the levels are not too bad.

The face detection system was fast and accurate, and Canon has cleverly combined it with the self timer. So, instead of setting the self timer and then racing to get in the frame, you can set up Face Self-Timer and then nonchalantly stroll into position, because the Digital Ixus 980 IS battery won’t take the shot until it detects an additional face - yours. We tried it and it works well, although be warned, in this mode, the 980 fires off three consecutive frames. Macro shots were impressive too, as was the continuous shooting mode of around 1.3 f/s.

However, there were a couple of disappointments. We wish Canon had given the Ixus 980 a lens with a better wide-angle setting. Yes, there is a panoramic feature that will help you stitch a spread of shots together, but you shouldn’t have to deploy this in order to squeeze in a little more side detail. Red eye was a problem in a number of shots, but that said, the Ixus 980 has one of the best red-eye correction systems we’ve used, allowing you to select individual eyes for processing.

Canon IXUS 980 IS Gallery
The new Canon IXUS 980 IS camera features Canon's optical Image Stabilizer ensuring sharp pictures through the entire zoom range including photographing in bad light circumstances. The Canon IXUS IS is equipped with Canon's new DIGIC 4 image processor. This processor should guarantee an extremely fast processing and noise-free pictures in addition to offering intelligent technologies, which adds positively to the ease of operation and the chance of a successful picture.

Canon IXUS manual mode
For those looking to take their photography to the next level, the Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS battery offers a first for Digital IXUS: a Manual Mode that allows control of shutter speed and aperture . This is ideal for unusual lighting situations or expressive, experimental shots. For split-second photo opportunities, a second new mode - QuickShot - uses the optical viewfinder for framing and focusing, virtually eliminating shutter lag. The Canon IXUS 980 IS also features Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer technology, for blur-free shots throughout the zoom range and in low-light conditions.

The Canon IXUS 980 IS is digital camera on my priority list to be reviewed soon. In addition to the test in practice at which operation and functionality of the IXUS camera are evaluated together with the captured pictures, the technical test in our DIWA Lab is crucial to come to a balanced final conclusion. The Canon 980 IS sample photos were taken with a full production cameral which means that this camera model is equal to the CANON NB-5L battery camera that the consumer can expect to purchase. The test photos were taken in Cologne, Germany and some of them are taken in purmerend near to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The pictures in this article have been reduced to enable correct reproduction and compressed to ensure a faster loading time. The large original Canon IXUS 980 IS photos are the original, unedited sample photos.
