Jewelry sites among top gainers in December

albajone | 22 July, 2008 01:44

Retail jewelry Web sites trailed only cosmetics and consumer goods in category growth from unique visitors during the month of December, an analysis by ComScore Inc. reveals.

As consumers rushed to complete their holiday gift lists online, the analysis showed that fragrance and cosmetics sites experienced a 30 percent increase in the number of unique visitors between November and December, followed by consumer-goods sites with a 23 percent increase, and jewelry, luxury goods and accessories sites with a 22 percent increase, to 24 million unique visitors.

Other sites with a significant increase in unique visitors during the month of December included shipping (21 percent), retail-music (17 percent) and gay and lesbian Web sites (16 percent.)

When it comes to individual Web sites, OfficeMax topped the list for unique-visitor growth in December with a 170 percent increase, fueled mostly by its popular, viral holiday-greeting site Elfyourself.com.

Yahoo Sites continued its reign as the top U.S. Web property in December with about 137 million unique visitors, followed by Google Sites with 133 million and Microsoft Sites with 120 million.

Apple Inc. did well in December, moving up to the No. 10 spot due to interest in the iPod and iPhone as holiday gifts.

Other retail sites that posted big gains in December included Sears, J.C. Penney and Best Buy.

ComScore Inc. measures the digital world based on a global cross-section of more than 2 million consumers who have given the company permission to confidentially capture their browsing and transaction behavior, including online and offline purchasing. ComScore panelists also participate in survey research that captures and integrates their attitudes and intentions.

Cisco Newbie - Start on the CCNA

Cisco Newbie - Start on the CCNA

Want to start getting into routers etc so looking at doing some cisco stuff?
Think you need to start on the CCNA? but dont really know where or know of any real books that can teach you this from scratch? Here is a guideline for the Cisco newbies to start on the CCNA.

Q: Looking at doing some cisco stuff?

A: Cisco’s Career Certifications & Paths information can be found here.
Cisco also has a CCNA Prep Center — it might impress you, or it might scare you away — but worth a look to get an idea of what Cisco makes available.

http://www.cisco.com/go/prepcenter Only one comment on the prepCenter.
When watching the flash, dont take their word when they say that linux is an operating system.

One who says that linux is an OS, states that his knowledge of operating systems converging to zero (especially linux based).

Q: Don’t really know where or know of any real books that can teach you this from scratch.

A: The books you’ll hear the most about around here are:
Sybex - Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide — by Todd Lammle. Should be on the 5th edition. Great for learning subnetting. Missing some info, but there are one or two new update chapters available for download.

Cisco Press - The CCNA 640-802 books by Wendell Odom. Probably the CCNA Official Exam Certification Library.

You can check out all the Cisco Press Books (and the link to the simulator) at the Cisco Press Web site.
Hands-on practice is important…. but you can get by with the simulator for the CCNA.

In the 646-227 exam resources, Lifecycle Services Advanced IP Communications Exam, you will cover every field and category in APE for Validating Knowledge helping to ready you for your successful Cisco Certification.

Q: Are the exams expensive?

A: The CCNA 640-802 exam is $125.
There is also the 2 exam option (INTRO and ICND). There should be link at the CCNP Prep Center that explains it. I think those are $100 each.

That should be enough links to keep you busy for the rest of the night.

Which Certification Is Best For You

albajone | 17 July, 2008 03:45

Which Certification Is Best For You

A certification is one of the most valuable weapons in your job-hunting arsenal. A college degree and some experience a??? and maybe a brother-in-law whoa??s the hiring manager a??? doesna??t hurt either. But companies eager to hire specialists turn to certified candidates, in hopes that those candidates will be able to hit the ground running, and will require no training period. Although a bachelora??s degree in computer science is always a plus, it doesna??t necessarily prove that you know how to run a Microsoft network. An MCSE does.

The most popular certifications, by far, are those from Microsoft and Cisco, but hundreds of designations are available for every conceivable specialty. For a comprehensive listing of certifications, consult Anne Martineza??s book, Get Certified & Get Ahead (McGraw-Hill).

a??In IT certification, what youa??re going to get is some immediate bang for your buck in terms of salary increase,a?? said Amit Yoran, CEO of information security provider Riptech and adjunct professor at George Washington University. However, Yoran still stresses the importance of having a college degree to accompany the certification.

Why certify? Doug Kendzierski, associate vice provost at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), said, a??Wea??re in a market in which demand has never outpaced supply by such a tremendous disparity.a?? Certification is a way to prove to a potential employer that you have a specific set of skills, thereby making their hiring decision a little bit easier.

Whata??s the hottest certification?

a??Two areas of focus I see as very attractive is any sort of networking-based technologies, and the other is software engineering disciplines,a?? said Yoran. Beyond the most common certifications (Microsoft, Cisco, Novell), though, there are plenty of other designations that may be just as valuable. If you want a career in Linux, get the RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) certification. If you want to cash in on the increasing concern over network security, the SANS GIAC (System Administration, Networking, and Security Global Incident Analysis Center) certificate will show potential employers that you can protect the corporate goodies. To gain even more leverage, combine this vendor-neutral security certification with a vendor-specific one. Almost every firewall-equipment vendor has its own certification program, and a generic security certification combined with a CCSE (Check Point Certified Security Engineer) or a Cisco Security Specialist certificate would make for a quick path to employment.

In the MB5-294 exam resources, FRx Report Design, you will cover every field and category in Microsoft Business Solutions helping to ready you for your successful Microsoft Certification.

Of course, the venerable MCSE still carries a lot of weight, perhaps more than ever since Microsoft made the test more scenario-based and less theoretical. The test is definitely more difficult, but that makes it more valuable in the marketplace. According to Mike Smith, senior product marketing manager for IT training and courseware development company Wave Technologies International, a??They dona??t just say, a??Here, answer this question.a?? Microsoft has case studies, where they say, a??Herea??s a scenario, read these three pages and answer these seven questions.a?? Theya??ll give you a diagram of pieces to a network puzzle and say, a??Put this together, tell me where your routers go, where your servers go, where your desktops are going to be and tell me the flow of your cabling.a?? Youa??re not going to come up with that on your own.a??

Vendor-specific or vendor-neutral?

a??If you take a networking essentials exam, you dona??t learn networking essentials, you learn Microsofta??s view of networking essentials,a?? said Yoran. This is a useful approach if you are going to run a Microsoft network, but according to Yoran, a??the academic approach is a much purer one.a?? If you have a vendor-specific certification, you understand a specific piece of proprietary technology, and that is often what employers want. But in the long run, confining yourself to a single vendor-specific certification may limit your advancement options. a??Youa??re taking a near-term gain with a long-term detriment,a?? said Yoran.

Combining a vendor-specific certification with a vendor-neutral one will expand your horizons and position your value beyond a specific piece of technology. a??Somebody who is just starting out has no choice but to start at a vendor-neutral platform,a?? said Kendzierski, a??because what they need is a full survey of technology that is not rooted in a particular product.a?? You should pursue a certification in a specific vendora??s technology after you get that theoretical background, either through a vendor-neutral certification or college education.

The cost factor

You can easily spend thousands a??? even tens of thousands a??? of dollars on a combined training/certification program, although the testing alone usually only costs a couple hundred. The best deal is still Brainbench, a Web-based testing center that offers certificates for just about anything you can think of and is well-known and respected throughout the IT industry. Some tests are still available for free, but most cost $19.95.

Tips for Buying Cross Pendants
Cross pendants are the perfect accessories to show the world your faith. Available in a wide variety of styles, it's quite simple to find cross necklaces that you would love to wear. A beautiful symbol of hope and faith, cross pendants make a wonderful gift for someone you love or a perfect addition to your jewelry box!

When deciding which cross pendants you enjoy, it important to know which style suits you best. With such a wide range to choose from, you're sure to find a necklace you love.
If you love fine jewelry, consider purchasing a gold cross pendant. Gold crosses sell well, and seem to be a favorite among many people who purchase cross pendants.

You can purchase gold crosses in white or yellow gold. Each would make a stunning addition to any jewelry collection, and are available in a wide range of prices to suit your preferences and your budget! Gold crosses are also very versatile in that they can be worn with anything! You can even customize a gold cross necklace by the type of jewels, if any, you choose.

For example, there are beautiful 14k gold cross pendants made with cultured pearls, peridot, emerald stones and a host of other precious and semi-precious gems.
There are even gorgeous diamond cross pendants for those who enjoy a little flash and can afford to spend a bit extra on an exquisite piece of jewelry. A white gold diamond cross pendant looks stunning, and can be worn with anything for an extra bit of flair and pizzazz.

Those on a budget will find that diamond and gold cross necklaces are a little more than they can afford. However, there's an easy remedy for this problem' stainless steel crosses! Stainless steel crosses are more affordable than their gold or diamond counterparts, and are still just as beautiful. The fact that they won't put a huge dent in your wallet is a definite plus.

As if these choices weren't enough, there are Celtic cross pendants for people who appreciate their Irish heritage or simply like the design of the Celtic cross. A lot of Celtic crosses are available in high quality, yet inexpensive sterling silver. However, if you prefer to spend a little extra you can purchase a beautiful 14k gold Celtic cross pendant for men or women.

Available in white or yellow gold, diamonds or stainless steel, cross pendants are a beautiful symbol of faith and a lovely addition to any jewelry collection. No matter what type of cross necklace suits you, you are sure to find an exceptional piece of jewelry you'll love to wear time and again for many years to come.

Have you ever noticed how CCIE people always tend to recommend Cisco product?

albajone | 14 July, 2008 01:48

Have you ever noticed how CCIE people always tend to recommend Cisco product?

But many times employees become too focused on obtaining CCIE certifications, to the point of doing things that are NOT in the best interest of the company they work for.

I can say this because I have personally seen it happen many times and have questioned these folks as to why they did what they did.

Many times the response I hear is they wanted to obtain another Cisco CCIE Certification.

So I have seen companies pull the top industry leading security products out of circuit and replace them with Cisco solutions only.

Unknown to the company’s senior management, this new product was put in place for the sole purpose of some Cisco geek (in training) wanting to get their next CCIE Certification; then once they got their desired certification they left that company for a higher paying job.

Like I said, I have seen this happen more than once.

Fighting Macular Degeneration with Antioxidants

albajone | 11 July, 2008 06:27

Research shows that antioxidants may lower the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or at least slow the progression of the disease:

    * Vitamin E was associated with a 13% reduced risk of AMD in a 12-year study of 22,000 male physicians.

    *  A study of patients with signs of AMD showed those who took zinc supplements had less visual loss from the disease compared to patients receiving a placebo.2

    *  In 1994, the Eye Disease Case Control Study indicated that dietary carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin, slowed the progression of AMD.  People who ate the most green leafy vegetables were 88 percent less likely to develop severe AMD than subjects who ate the least amount of green leafy vegetables.

The Window Object: Its Properties, Methods, and Events

albajone | 10 July, 2008 03:25

The world is full of objects. Each object can be recognized by its unique property. Every object contains methods and events that help the users to use the object. For example, if you are driving a car or pressing the accelerator, it is an event. The increasing of the speed is a method that is invoked when the accelerator is pressed. In a similar way, JavaScript contains many objects. Each object has its own properties, methods, and events. With the help of these properties, methods, and events, the objects can be used to make a Web page or Web site interactive.

Now, you will see how to use the properties, methods, and events of an object by taking the example of the window object.

The window object consists of different properties, methods, and events that can be used as follows:

    * change the content of the window.
    * open a new window.
    * create and access frames in a multiframe window.
    * work with forms, etc.

The following table displays the properties, methods, and events of the window object:

Properties    Methods    Events
closed     alert()    onblur
defaultStatus     back()    ondragdrop
document     blur()    onfocus
frames []     captureEvents()    onload
history    clearInterval()    onmove
innerHeight    clearTimeout()    onresize
innerWidth    close()    onunload
location    confirm()
locationbar    disableExternalCapture()
menubar    enableExternalCapture()
name    find()
onerror    handleEvent()
opener    forward()
outerHeight    home()
outerWidth    moveBy()
pageXOffset    moveTo()
pageYOffset    focus()
parent    open()
personalbar    print()
scrollbars    prompt()
self    releaseEvents()
status    resizeBy()
statusbar    resizeTo()
toolbar    routeEvent()
top    scroll()
window    scrollBy()
    scrollTo()
    setInterval()
    setTimeout()
    stop()

The closed property

The closed property is used to check whether the child window is closed or not. This property returns a boolean value. It returns true if the window is closed.

var nwind=null
function op()
{
               nwind=window.open("","hello")
               if(nwind.closed==true)
               {
                nwind=window.open("","hello")
               }
}
function cld()
{
                if(nwind.closed==false)
               {
               nwind.close()
               }
}

The defaultStatus property

This defaultStatus property is used to put a default text at the statusbar of the browser window. If the mouse pointer moves over a link, the status bar text changes to the path of the URL. On removing the mouse pointer, the text changes back to the default text.

function defstat()
{
               window.defaultStatus="It is my program"
}

The document property

The document property is related to the content area of the window. It is used to access the objects that are contained in it. For example, a form and its elements.

The frames property

The frames property is an array of frames. In a multiframe window, this property is used to access a frame according to its number in the window.

If a window contains two frames, their index value will be 0 and 1.

Following is the syntax to access the frames:

top.frames[0]
parent.frames[0]

The history property

The history property of the window object is the history object. The browser maintains the list of all the URLs that are accessed during the surfing of the Internet. In JavaScript, this list is maintained by the history object. A script can methodically navigate to each URL in the history by a relative number or by stepping back one URL at a time.

The innerHeight and innerWidth properties

The innerHeight and innerWidth properties are related to the dimensions of the content area of the window. These properties are used to set or get the width and height of the content area of the document.

The location property

The location property represents the location of the URL of the currently open window or of a specific frame. A multiframe window displays the URL of the topmost window in the location field. To get the URL of a frame, the user should use the frame reference before the location object. For example:

parent.framename.location

The locationbar property

The locationbar property refers to the addressbar where the URL of the current window is displayed. In Internet Explorer, it is called the addressbar and the property used is location, not locationbar. The locationbar is the property of the Netscape browser.

The menubar property

The menubar property refers to the menubar of the browser window.

The personalbar property

The personalbar property refers to the personal bar in the Netscape browser. The personalbar is known as directories in the Internet Explorer.

The scrollbars property

The scrollbars property refers to the horizontal and the vertical scrollbars of the browser window.

The statusbar property

The statusbar property is used to display the statusbar of the browser window. In the Netscape browser, the property is called statusbar, and in Internet Explorer, it is called status.

The toolbar property

The toolbar property is used to display the standard toolbar of the browser window.

The opener property

When a new window is created from the original window, the new window can access the properties and functions of the original window by the opener property.

The syntax of using the opener property is as follows:

opener.propertyname
opener.functionname

The outerHeight and outerWidth properties

The outerHeight and outerWidth properties are related to the dimensions of the browser window. These properties are used to get or set the width and height of the browser window.

The pageXOffset and pageYOffset properties

The pageXOffset and pageYOffset properties refer to the coordinate system of the content area of the browser window. The pageXOffset refers to the x-position and the pageYOffset refers to the y-position corner of the content area.

The parent property

The parent property is used to access the property of the parent frame from a child frame. If a window contains a frameset, the browser window is the parent of the frame. If the child frameset contains another frameset, this means that the window consists of three generations.

The following is the syntax:

parent.propertyname

The self property

The self property refers to the current window or frame that contains the object. It can be used to access the property of the same window or frame.

The following is the syntax:

self.propertyname

The status property

The status property is used to write some text in the statusbar of the browser window. This property displays the URL of the Web page that is being loaded in the browser window.

The syntax is as follows:

window.status="The string"

The top property

The top property refers to the topmost window in a multiframe window. It is the first window that defines the first frameset. It is the parent of all frames and all the frames can access the properties of the topmost window by using the top property.

For example:

top.propertyname

The window property

The window property refers to the same window object.

The alert() method

The alert method is used to display a warning message for the user if he has made any mistake. For example, in form validation, the user can be warned for entering wrong data in a field

The syntax of using the alert method is as follows:

alert("string")

The back() and forward() methods

The back method is used to move to the previous page from the current page. It has the same function as the back navigation button in the standard toolbar of the browser. The back method works only in the Netscape browser.

window.back()

The forward method is used to move to the next page from the current page. It has the same function as the forward navigation button in the standard toolbar of the browser. The back method works only in Netscape browser.

window.forward()

The blur() method

When the blur method is invoked, the current window loses the focus.

window.blur()

The captureEvents() method

The captureEvents method takes one or more event types as parameter. The event type that is captured by the window object triggers the function invoked on that event handler.

The syntax of using the captureEvents function is as follows:

window.captureEvents(event_type_list)

The clearInterval() and setInterval() methods

The setInterval method is used to execute an expression with a fixed number of time delay between the call to that expression.

The syntax is as follows:

window.setInterval("function_name",delay)

The clearInterval is used to turn off the loop started by the setInterval method.

The syntax is as follows:

window.clearInterval(intervalId)

The clearTimeout() and setTimeout() methods

The setTimeout method is used to set a certain amount of time for a function to be executed.

The syntax is as follows:

window.setTimeout("function_name",delay)

The clearTimeout method is used to cancel the timer that is set by the clearTimeout method.

The syntax is as follows:

window.clearTimeout(intervalId)

The close() and open() methods

The open method is used to open a window from the main window.

The syntax is as follows:

window.open("URL", "window_name","window_features")

The close method is used to close the window that is opened by the open method.

The syntax is as follows:

window.close()

The confirm() method

The confirm method is used to present a message in a modal dialog box along with the OK and cancel buttons. This dialog box can be used to ask a question to the user about the actions, which, if performed, will not be undoable.

The syntax is as follows:

confirm("message")

The find() method

The find method is used to search a text string within a document.

The syntax is as follows:

window.find("searchstring",matchcase)

The focus() method

The focus method is used to focus a window from a different window.

The syntax is as follows:

window.focus

The moveBy() and moveTo() methods

The moveBy and moveTo methods are used to adjust the position of the window on the screen.

The syntax is as follows:

window.moveBy(x,y)
window.moveTo(x,y)

The print() method

The print method is used to print the hard copy of the contents present in the browser. The print method works in the same way as the print button on the standard toolbar of the browser.

The syntax is as follows:

window.print()

The prompt() method

The prompt method is used to open a dialog box that includes a message from the script author, a field for user entry, and the OK and Cancel bottoms. The script writer can supply a prewritten answer so a user can press the OK button when he is confronted with it.

The syntax is as follows:

prompt("text",defaultValue)

The resizeBy() and resizeTo() methods

The resizeBy and resizeTo methods are used to resize the browser window. The resizeBy method adjusts the window relative to the screen while the resizeTo method resizes the window with absolute position.

The syntax is as follows:

window.reiszeBy(x,y)
window.reiszeTo(x,y)

The scroll, scrollBy, and scrollTo methods

All the three methods are used to navigate within the content of the browser window.

The scroll method scrolls the window according to the coordinates supplied. This method is now deprecated and the scrollTo method is used in its place

The scrollBy method scrolls the window according to the pixels specified.

The scrollTo method scrolls the window according to the coordinates supplied.

The syntax for these methods is as follows:

scroll(x,y)
scrollBy(x,y)
scrollTo(x,y)

The onblur Event Handler

The onblur event handler is fired when a window loses focus.

The onfocus event handler

The onfocus event handler is fired when a window gets the focus.

The ondragdrop event handler

The ondragdrop event handler is fired when a dragdrop occurs on the browser.

The onload Event Handler

The onload event handler is fired when the full document has been loaded on the window.

The onmove event handler

The onmove event handler is fired when a window is moved around the screen.

The onresize event handler

The onresize event handler is fired when the browser window is resized.

The onunload event handler

The onunload event handler is fired when a document is unloaded from a window.

How to Protect Your Eye: 10-Point Eye Health Plan

albajone | 08 July, 2008 06:20

How to Protect Your Eye: 10-Point Eye Health Plan

10-point Eye Health Plan by leading healthy lifestyle expert, Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, NWHRC Medical Advisor.

1. Quit smoking. If you smoke, you're much more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, than nonsmokers. AMD is the most common cause of blindness in those over 65. And while there are some ways to slow its progression, there is no cure.

2. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat when you're in the sun. These two simple steps can reduce your exposure to eye-damaging UV rays up to 18-fold! And, if you wear contacts, ask your eye care specialist about contact lenses with UV protection.

3. Watch your weight. What's weight got to do with your eyes? A lot. Being overweight is a major risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes. And diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in those under 65. Not only that, but the Nurses' Health Study from Harvard Medical School found women with a body mass index of 30 or more (considered obese) were 36 percent more likely to develop cataracts, possibly because of some relation to high blood glucose levels.

4. Take fish oil supplements daily, or eat fish two or three times a week. There's some evidence that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and other foods may reduce your risk of AMD. Conversely, limit the amount of vegetable oil in your diet; there's some evidence it can increase your risk.

5. Eat three or more servings of fruit a day. In one study, women who did this reduced their risk of AMD by 36 percent compared to those who ate less than 1.5 servings.

6. Eat your spinach. What Popeye didn't know was that spinach is a rich source of lutein and zeaxanthin, powerful antioxidants that can reduce the risk of certain eye diseases, like AMD. Other good sources include any kind of leafy green vegetable such as collards and kale, as well as eggs and orange-colored fruits.

7. See your eye care professional for a full vision examination at least once every two years. Go more often if you have diabetes or any other eye-related condition.

8. Get a 30-minute walk in every day. There's some evidence that regular exercise can reduce the intraocular pressure in people with glaucoma. In one study, glaucoma patients who walked briskly four times per week for 40 minutes lowered the pressure within their eyes enough so they could stop taking their glaucoma medication.

9. Change your eye makeup every three to six months. That means new mascara, liner and powder. The makeup becomes contaminated with bacteria from your lashes and lids and can infect your eye.

10. Don't fall asleep in your daily-wear contact lenses. In fact, don't ever wear them longer than they're designed to be worn. If you want contacts that you can wear overnight, talk to your eye care professional about whether they are appropriate for you.

Dry Eye In Shih Tzus

Among other breeds of dog, Shih Tzus and Pugs are more likely to obtain keratoconjunctivitis. Keratoconjunctivitis is a Latin word which literally means dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva. It is commonly known as dry eye.

This disease is the result of abnormal production of tears. Tears are essential because it cleanse and lubricate the cornea, carry the nutrients and also help in healing and control of the infection.

KCS is thought to be caused by some viral infections like canine distemper as well as immune mediated diseases. Other reasons of this disease are hyperthyroidism and the use of sulfa-containing drugs. Sulfa-containing drugs cause dry eyes by producing a toxic effect and the absence of this drug may improve dry eye.

Dry eye in dogs is characterized with dull and dry winking eyes. He may also experience recurrent eye infections and/or corneal ulcers. Thick, green discharge is usually seen sticking to the hair around the eye. This is usually diagnosed in one eye first and later develops in the other eye within several months. A dog with KCS tends to squint and rub his eyes and is sensitive to light. If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, it is best to see your veterinarian immediately for eye examination.

Dry eye is diagnosed based on the symptoms mentioned earlier. Also with a Schirmer tear test (STT) that measures the production of the tear production in the eye. A dog’s normal STT values are 15 to 25 mm/minute. Dog breed that is susceptible to conjunctivitis, even without clinical signs of dry eye should undergo STT.

Treatment of KCS usually aims to restore the moisture of the eye by lubricating the eye, tear replacement, stimulating tear production, reducing bacteria overgrowth and reducing inflammation. Substitutes like polyvinyl alcohol, methylcellulose and hyaluronic acid are traditionally used to replace the lost tears. However, these solutions do not have a primary effect on the inflammation process and in the production of tears.

Recently veterinarians prescribe Cyclosporine, diluted in water and applied to the surface of the eye in order to stimulate tear production. Cyclosporine shows no undesirable effects even if used in long term basis. The use of cyclosporine may retain a dog’s vision for years but that doesn’t work for all patients with KCS. These treatments do not cure KCS, but are just ways to deal with this painful condition. In worst cases, dry eye can also be treated through surgery.

Dry eye seems to be a simple disease but if left untreated, might damage your dog’s vision or may even result to complete blindness.

High Index Eyeglass Lenses

albajone | 04 July, 2008 07:59

As anybody who has had to wear thick lenses can tell you, it can make you a little self-conscious and you would do anything for something a little thinner. Lenses are made from a variety of materials. Many of these materials are designed to be thinner than a conventional lens. This means that they have a higher Index of refraction. Index of Refraction refers to the lenses ability to bend light. The prescription of a lens is determined by two main factors; the lens?s index of refraction and lens curvature. The higher the index the less curvature that is needed thus the lens can be processed thinner. The lower the index the more curvature is needed for the desired prescription thus making it thicker.

Often you may hear the Optician or doctor referring to these lenses by numbers such as such as 1.60, 1.66, and 1.70.  These numbers represent the refractive power of the lens. The higher the number the thinner the lens. There are several other benefits to a high index lens. Lenses with a higher index often have a greater tensile strength than other conventional materials. This tensile strength is around 15,000 psi! This makes them suitable for drill mount glasses.

But because a lens is thinner and tougher does not mean that it is without flaws. The higher the index the more reflection that occurs off of the lens surface. The higher the index the more resistance is given to light. This resistance increases the amount of light that is bounces off. For instance a conventional plastic lens with an index of 1.498 will cause 8% of the light to reflect off of the surfaces creating 92% transmission. A lens with the index of 1.70 will cause 13.6% of the light to be reflected creating only 86.4% transmission. The application of an Anti-reflective coating can greatly increase light transmission.

Congratulations!
