Dear Readers and Fellow-Apes; 2008 was a Murky and Hapless Year! Let us hope that 2009 does not turn out to be even More Murky and Hapless!

I intentionally did not wish you a Merry Christmas, because Christmas is another story for another Posting at another time; and I do not wish you a Happy New Year, since I believe that ONLY FOOLS ARE, OR CAN BE, HAPPY ALL YEAR ROUND. I do, however, wish all of you A GOOD YEAR! With a little Good in one's life, one can be a little happy, which is all one can ask for in one's short sweet dream one calls a life-time. BY GOD AND SATAN!

Egypt school exam cheats jailed

A court in the Egyptian town of Minya jailed 14 people for their involvement in a plot to leak details of important high school exam papers. The ringleader – who heads the local examination board – was sentenced to 15 years. 13 other people were jailed for between 3 and 10 years.

Hundreds of thousands of pupils sit for the exam every year, but officials said the majority was not affected and the problem was limited to Minya – Daniel: Horse-shit!

Correspondents say that the thanwiya amma exams – Egypt's equivalent of A-levels or SATs – can determine the future course of a child's life. Court officials said the accused had organised leaks, which damaged the principle of equal opportunities for pupils in mathematics and English. When the scandal first broke in June, it caused an outrage in Egypt and prompted questions in parliament.

The head of the Minya Examinations Committee was sacked from his job and received the heaviest punishment. His associate was jailed for 10 years for purchasing exam papers and selling them. Four other accused, including a policeman and a headmaster, were jailed for 7 years and received fines. Others, including parents who bought exam papers, were jailed for between 3 and 5 years.

Correspondents say corruption is rife in parts of the Egyptian administrative system and assurances that the cheating scandal had only affected Minya province were met with skepticism – Daniel: Skepticism! Horse-shit again! And BY GOD, TOO!

There have been calls for all 800,000 pupils who sat the exam this year to be re-tested with new papers – Daniel: That is the least the government and the examination committee must do to disperse doubts. So much for skepticism!
