WHY NOW BASHAR AL ASS-AD? EXECUTIONS COULD STRAIN SYRIA-SAUDI RELATIONS: Syria now knows how it feels. Where are the thousands of Lebanese who were carted off like so many cattle; beaten and tortured to death?

Syria News Briefing 1st May 2008

Dear readers and fellow-Apes; before I begin, I repeat: BASHAR AL ASS-AD

AL ASS-AD! Sounds like an Ad (Advertisement) for ASSES (and asses with both meanings) or a Newspaper that deals with or writes only about ASSES (and asses with both meanings)! ASS = ANUS and ASS = DONKEY!

The recent execution of three Syrians convicted of drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia could mark a downturn in the already frosty relationship between the two countries. Feras Al-Aghbar and Feras Al-Maktabi were executed on 17th April and Ibrahim Al-Jarkh was executed on 25th April; three in Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Dozens of people with relatives detained in Saudi Arabia were ordered to stage protests outside the Saudi Embassy and the Interior Ministry in Damascus holding signs aloft: Bashar al-Ass-Ad; save our families and brothers from Saudi Arabia’s unpredictable verdicts. Unpredictable verdicts! BY GOD! If there is one thing that is stable and predictable in Saudi Arabia, it’s verdicts! You do it, we catch you, we bind you hand and foot, and then we lop off your head. How simple and effective!

State-run televisions reported the demonstration in some detail, and other media gave broad coverage to news of the executions. However, and but! As a local human rights activist pointed out, it is well-known that no demonstrations are allowed in Syria unless they have the green light from the authorities. This appears to be a move by Syria against the Saudi government. It won’t wash and it won’t do.

Several Syrian media outlets reported last week that there are as many as 1,200 Syrian nationals who are being held in Saudi prisons, of which 300 await execution. And what of the thousands of innocent Lebanese in Syria’s prisons, who were beaten and tortured to death?

The embassy source also said that Syrian diplomats had not been notified about the two earlier executions, which took place on April 17. Was the Saudi government supposed to notify the Syrian Embassy and ask their permission, too? By the way, were those Syrian Jackals in Saudi Arabia legally; and had the Syrian Embassy any records of their presence in the Kingdom? I strongly doubt it.

In a press conference earlier this week, Saudi justice minister Abdullah al-Sheikh denied that politics played any role when capital punishment was used on convicted Syrians. You’re damn right Politics has nothing to do with it! It is the Law of the Land! Like it, or lump it. Like it, or leave it. But do it, and we do it to you, too!

According to Amnesty International, several prisoners were executed in Syria last year after being convicted in special Military Courts in which no Defence Attorneys are present - at least seven recorded executions, which means the actual figure could be at least three or four times more.

Syria News Briefing, a weekly news analysis service, draws on information and opinion from a network of IWPR-trained Syrian journalists based in the country, whose identities cannot be revealed for security reasons. One of the ASSES through which Syria FARTS what it likes and when it likes to the Syrian Chickens.
